THERE WAS A GREAT TURN OUT, OVER 225 PEOPLE FOR THE FIRST DATE, INCLUDING A JACK AND JILL YOUTH GROUP FROM RALEIGH. - THE EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION: VOICES TO FREEDOM EXHIBITION OPENED TO THE PUBLIC ON SATURDAY MARCH 26TH. VISITORS FOLLOWED A PATH THROUGH GREENSBORO'S HISTORY THAT INCLUDED POWERFUL STORIES OF 300 YEARS OF AFRICAN AMERICAN EXPERIENCE SEEKING LIBERTY AND FREEDOM. THE HIGHLIGHT OF THIS FOUR-WEEK EXHIBITION WAS A LELAND-BOKER 1864 EDITION OF THE EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION SIGNED BY PRESIDENT ABRAHAM LINCOLN, ON LOAN FROM THE LINCOLN FOUNDATION COLLECTION OF THE INDIANA STATE MUSEUM. ATTENDANCE DURING THAT TIME WAS TRIPLE THE NORM, OVER 8,000 VISITORS. 1. THREE 50 MINUTE PERFORMANCES THE WEEKEND OF APRIL 12TH, BY PETER HOLLAND, WHO PORTRAYED LINCOLN ON THE EVENING OF HIS ASSASSINATION 2. THE MANY MEANINGS OF THE EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION ON THURSDAY, APRIL 16 AT 7 P.M. THIS PANEL DISCUSSION FEATURED 3 AREA PROFESSORS. - OUR EXHIBITION, WARNERSVILLE: OUR HOME, OUR NEIGHBORHOOD, OUR STORIES WAS SELECTED BY THE NORTH CAROLINA MUSEUMS COUNCIL (NCMC) TO RECEIVE AN AWARD OF EXCELLENCE FOR EXHIBITION RESEARCH, DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT COMPLETED IN 2014. - THIS IS MY HOME NOW, A DOCUMENTARY FEATURING TEENS FROM MONTAGNARD FAMILIES WHO FLED THEIR HOMELAND IN SOUTHEAST ASIA, WAS BROADCAST ON UNC-TV ON TUESDAY, APRIL 28 AT 11 PM. FUNDED BY THE CENTER FOR ASIAN AMERICAN MEDIA AND DIRECTED BY MARIAH DUNN KRAMER, THE 30 MINUTE FILM, PRODUCED BY THE GREENSBORO HISTORICAL MUSEUM, WAS ALSO BROADCAST ON PBS STATIONS NATIONALLY. THE FILM WON AN HONORABLE MENTION AWARD FROM THE SOUTHEAST MUSEUM COUNCIL TECHNOLOGY COMPETITION. - ALMOST 900 PEOPLE INTERACTED WITH THE MUSEUM STAFF AT THE ANNUAL PARISIAN PROMENADE EVENT AT THE BICENTENNIAL GARDENS AND DAVID CALDWELL CENTER. - OUR 2ND ANNUAL ROARING 20S FLASHBACK ON JULY 11TH, WAS ATTENDED BY OVER 900 PEOPLE. LIVE JAZZ, ANTIQUE CARS, DANCERS, POPCORN & SILENT FILMS WERE JUST A FEW OF THE DAY LONG ACTIVITIES. MEDIA COVERAGE INCLUDED FOUR SPOTS LIVE FROM THE MUSEUM ON WFMY'S SATURDAY MORNING SHOW; RHINO TIMES PHOTO LAYOUT THE FOLLOWING THURSDAY, TIME WARNER CABLE MENTION, AND A WONDERFUL NEWS & RECORD STORY THAT WAS PICKED UP BY OTHER CITIES IN THE REGION, LIKE WINSTON-SALEM. - THE AUGUST ISSUE OF OUR STATE MAGAZINE HAS A WONDERFUL ARTICLE ON DOLLEY MADISON'S RED VELVET DRESS. WE PITCHED THIS STORY TO THEM LAST SEPTEMBER, AND IT WAS A GREAT FIT FOR THEIR FASHION ISSUE. GHM INC. ALSO HAS AGREED TO ALLOW DISNEY WORLD TO RECREATE THIS DRESS FOR THEIR HALL OF FIRST LADIES IN THE MAGIC KINGDOM. GHM INC. WILL RECEIVE COMPENSATION, AND THE MUSEUM ACKNOWLEDGEMENT ON THE LABEL. - THE MEET THE MONTAGNARD PROGRAM WAS A HIGHLIGHT FOR US DURING THE SEPTEMBER NATIONAL FOLK FESTIVAL WEEKEND. FUNDED IN PART BY THE FABRIC OF FREEDOM ARTS GREENSBORO INITIATIVE, THE MUSEUM HAD 2 DAYS OF LIVE PERFORMANCE AND CRAFT DEMONSTRATIONS. OVER 3,000 PEOPLE WERE IN ATTENDANCE. - THE ANNUAL HALLOWEEN EVENT GHOULASH, WAS HELD ON OCTOBER 24TH IN THE MUSEUMS HISTORIC RICHARDSON PARK AND PARKING LOT. OVER 600 PEOPLE TOURED THE CEMETERY FOR "UNLIVING GHOST TOURS OF THE GRAVEYARD". IN ADDITION, STORYTELLER CYNTHIA BROWN TOLD HER FOLKTALES TO A CAPTIVE AUDIENCE IN THE CEMETERY. - MISS BABE RUTH, THE GREENSBORO GRASSHOPPERS' "BAT DOG AND THE TEAM'S CANINE MASCOT DELIVERED SEVERAL ITEMS, A VEST AND A BAT, TO THE GREENSBORO HISTORICAL MUSEUM ON THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 19 AT 10:30 TO THE DELIGHT OF MANY NEWS OUTLETS. THE PR WAS WONDERFUL FOR THE MUSEUM AND INCLUDED COVERAGE OF THE FAMOUS BLACK LABRADOR RETRIEVER ON WFMY, WXII AND IN VARIOUS PRINT MEDIA. THE REPORT WENT NATIONAL. - ON NOVEMBER 17TH, IN CELEBRATION OF 9 DECADES OF THE MUSEUM, THERE WERE THREE SPECIAL EVENTS: 1. AN AUTHOR TALK AND BOOK SIGNING OF 27 VIEWS OF GREENSBORO, WITH FORMER NEWS & RECORD REPORTER JERI ROWE, STORYTELLER AND TEACHER & BLUES MUSICIAN LOGIE MEACHUM. THE DECIMAL POINTS ARTICLE IN THE NEWS 7 RECORD BY DIRECTOR CAROL HART REFERENCING THE EVENT WAS VERY WELL RECEIVED AND HELPED IN PROMOTION OF THE EVENT. 2. LIVING HISTORY EVENT---"GEE, I DIDN'T KNOW THAT!" 12:00 - 4:00 P.M. VISITORS WERE INVITED TO THROUGH THE MUSEUM, TO MEET INTERESTING AND INSPIRING PEOPLE FROM GREENSBORO'S PAST TO PRESENT. 3. A MUSEUM SHOP EVENT 1-4 WHERE VISITORS WERE INVITED TO ENJOY AN AFTERNOON CELEBRATING LOCAL FOODS AND ARTISANS WITH TASTINGS, DISTINCTIVE CRAFTS AND GIFT MERCHANDISE. SALES FOR THE DAY WERE $17,000. - VETERANS DAY WAS HONORED BY THE CITY AND MUSEUM BY HAVING THE MUSEUM OPEN. ALMOST 100 PEOPLE CAME; COMMUNITY HISTORIAN LINDA EVANS ATTENDED A LOCAL VETERANS FLAG RAISING. AT THIS YEAR'S ANNUAL DINNER ON NOVEMBER 17TH, OUR VOICES OF A CITY AWARD HONOREE WAS BILL MOSS, IN RECOGNITION OF HIS WORK ON THE CAROLINA FIELD OF HONOR, A COMMUNITY HISTORY PROJECT WITH GREENSBORO AND TRIAD CONNECTIONS. THE AWARD ALSO HELPED STRENGTHEN CONNECTIONS WITH THE VETERAN COMMUNITY. - THE MUSEUM'S MOUSETASTICAL HOLIDAY MOUSE HUNT WAS A GREAT SUCCESS, BOTH FROM A PR AND FAMILY ACTIVITY STANDPOINT. WFMY (12/20) AND TIME WARNER CABLE (12/23) DID THEIR LIVE MORNING SHOWS FROM THE MUSEUM HIGHLIGHTING THE MOUSE HUNT AND THE NEWS & RECORD FEATURED THE STORY IN THEIR CHRISTMAS EVE GO TRIAD. - ON WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 29TH THE N & R HIGHLIGHTED THE MADISON DAGUERREOTYPES IN THE MUSEUM'S COLLECTION ON THE FRONT PAGE AS PART OF AN ARTICLE, "5 THINGS YOU DIDN'T KNOW ARE IN GREENSBORO". THE STORY INCLUDED A QUOTE FROM THE MUSEUM DIRECTOR NOTING THAT THE IMAGES WERE PART OF OUR ADOPT AN OBJECT CONSERVATION PROGRAM, AND THAT WE WERE LOOKING TO RAISE $2,000. IT INCLUDED THE DIRECTOR'S PHONE NUMBER AND WITHIN HOURS OF THE PUBLICATION A CALL CAME IN WITH A DONATION FOR THE FULL AMOUNT NEEDED. THE DOLLEY MADISON DAGUERREOTYPES WILL BE ON THEIR WAY FOR CONSERVATION SHORTLY. - THE MYSTERIES AT THE MUSEUM EPISODE FILMED A YEAR AGO FEATURING THE STORY OF DOLLEY MADISON AND HER RED VELVET DRESS AIRED ON FRIDAY DECEMBER 19TH AND 31ST.
