THE BUILDING ZONE IS DESIGNED ESPECIALLY FOR OUR YOUNGEST VISITORS, AGES TWO TO SIX, AND THEIR ADULT COMPANIONS AND INTRODUCES CHILDREN TO THE BUILDING ARTS THROUGH ENGAGING ACTIVITIES. HOUSE AND HOME IS A LONG-TERM EXHIBITION THAT TAKES VISITORS ON A TOUR OF HOUSES BOTH FAMILIAR AND SURPRISING, THROUGH PAST AND PRESENT, CHALLENGING OUR IDEAS ABOUT WHAT IT MEANS TO LIVE AT HOME IN AMERICA.PLAY WORK BUILD TAKES CHILDREN AND ADULTS ALIKE THROUGH AN EXPLORATION OF PLAY WITH AN IMMERSIVE, HANDS-ON INSTALLATION FEATURING MOLDED FOAM BLOCKS OF ALL SHAPES AND SIZES AND AN ORIGINAL VIRTUAL BLOCK PLAY EXPERIENCE.COOL & COLLECTED: RECENT ACQUISITIONS: THIS EXHIBITION EXPLORES THE EXTRAORDINARY OBJECTS IN THE NATIONAL BUILDING MUSEUM'S COLLECTION. THE ARCHITECTURAL IMAGE, 1920-1950: BETWEEN 1920 AND 1950, ARCHITECTURE CHANGED MORE PROFOUNDLY AND MORE RAPIDLY THAN DURING ANY SIMILAR TIMESPAN IN HISTORY. THIS EXHIBITION PRESENTED PRINTS, ORIGINAL DRAWINGS, AND PAINTINGS FROM THIS TRANSFORMATIONAL PERIOD, ALL DRAWN FROM A SINGLE PRIVATE COLLECTION IN WASHINGTON, D.C.INVESTIGATING WHERE WE LIVE: INVESTIGATING WHERE WE LIVE PROVIDES TEENS WITH THE OPPORTUNITY TO PRESENT THE PUBLIC WITH THEIR VIEW OF WASHINGTON, D.C. THIS YEAR PARTICIPANTS EXPLORED THE DISTRICT THROUGH THE LENS OF ITS MONUMENTS, MEMORIALS, AND COMMEMORATIVE SPACES.

IN THESE PROGRAMS, STUDENTS EXPLORED THE PROCESS OF BUILDING HOMES, PLANNING A CITY, ENGINEERING, DESIGNING BUILDINGS, OR BASIC ARCHITECTURAL SKILLS. IN ADDITION, 367 STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN FOUR HOMESCHOOL DAYS, WHICH FEATURED A RANGE OF AGE-SPECIFIC ARCHITECTURE, ENGINEERING, AND DESIGN ACTIVITIES.THREE TWO-WEEK SUMMER CAMPS FOR CHILDREN IN 3RD THROUGH 5TH GRADE WERE ATTENDED BY A TOTAL OF 101 CHILDREN. SUMMER CAMPS OFFERED IN 2015 INCLUDED WORLD ARCHITECTS, CITY BUILDERS, AND ENGINEERING CHALLENGE.140 TEENS FROM DC AREA SCHOOLS WERE INVOLVED IN EXPLORING THE DESIGN PROCESS, CITY PLANNING, AND THEIR ROLE IN THE BUILD ENVIRONMENT THROUGH THE MUSEUM'S MULTI-VISIT PROGRAMS: CITYVISION (MIDDLE SCHOOL), DESIGN APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM (HIGH SCHOOL), AND INVESTIGATING WHERE WE LIVE (SUMMER HIGH SCHOOL). IN SUMMER 2015, STUDENTS IN THE INVESTIGATING WE LIVE PROGRAM PLANNED THE EXHIBITION, INVESTIGATING WHERE WE LIVE: NEW MONUMENTS REVEALED, WHICH EXPLORES THE DISTRICT THROUGH THE LENS OF ITS MONUMENTS, MEMORIALS, AND COMMEMORATIVE SPACES (ON VIEW AT THE MUSEUM THROUGH JUNE 6, 2016).THE MUSEUM'S TEEN COUNCIL - A GROUP OF 20 TEENS - MET MONTHLY OVER THE PAST YEAR FOR CONTINUED OPPORTUNITIES TO ENGAGE IN BUILT ENVIRONMENT TOPICS, DESIGN CHALLENGES, AND ENRICHMENT EXPERIENCES, SUCH AS A CAREER PANEL.LOCAL AND NATIONAL EDUCATORS WERE SERVED THROUGH THE MUSEUM'S TEACHER ENGAGEMENT PROGRAMS, WHICH INCLUDED SIX EDUCATOR WORKSHOPS FOR A TOTAL OF 131 TEACHERS BASED ON THE DESIGNING FOR DISASTER CURRICULUM KIT. MUSEUM STAFF ALSO PARTNERED WITH THE D.C. OFFICE OF THE STATE SUPERINTENDENT FOR EDUCATION, THE WASHINGTON INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL, AND THE NATIONAL ART EDUCATION ASSOCIATION TO SERVE AN ADDITIONAL 181 TEACHERS AT PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS HELD AT THE MUSEUM. TWELVE WEEKEND FAMILY PROGRAMS, INCLUDING THREE SPECIAL WORKSHOPS RELATED TO THE NATIONAL CHERRY BLOSSOM FESTIVAL, ENGAGED A TOTAL OF 7,226 ATTENDEES. IN ADDITION, THE ANNUAL DISCOVER ENGINEERING FAMILY DAY IN FEBRUARY AND THE BIG BUILD FAMILY DAY IN SEPTEMBER DREW 12,778 VISITORS COMBINED. THE MUSEUM'S HANDS-ON FAMILY TOOL KITS WERE USED BY 136 MUSEUM FAMILIES. THE MUSEUM DEVELOPED AND PRESENTED 73 PUBLIC PROGRAMS, INCLUDING LECTURES, PANEL DISCUSSIONS, SYMPOSIA, TOURS, AND FILMS, SERVING A TOTAL OF 5365 ADULT VISITORS. THE MUSEUM'S HIGH-PROFILE LECTURE SERIES SPOTLIGHT ON DESIGN FEATURED EHRLICH ARCHITECTS, LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT MIKYOUNG KIM, AND WASHINGTON DC'S 11TH STREET BRIDGE PROJECT. TOURS FOR MUSEUM MEMBERS PROVIDED ACCESS TO A VARIETY OF PROJECTS AND LOCATIONS, INCLUDING HOLY CROSS HOSPITAL SILVER SPRING, THE NEWEST HYATT PLACE HOTEL IN WASHINGTON, DC, AND A TOUR OF THE DEVELOPMENT AT WHITE FLINT. THE MUSEUM'S WEBSITE, WWW.NBM.ORG, SAW 823,997 VISITS AND ITS PAGES WERE ACCESSED OVER 1,000,000 TIMES DURING THE FISCAL YEAR. THE MUSEUM EXPERIENCED STRONG GROWTH IN ITS SOCIAL MEDIA PRESENCE, WITH INCREASES IN NETWORK SIZES AND INTERACTIONS WITH CONSTITUENTS ACROSS MULTIPLE SITES. WE FINISHED THE YEAR WITH OVER 20,000 FACEBOOK FANS; OVER 18,000 TWITTER FOLLOWERS; OVER 5,000 INSTAGRAM FOLLOWERS, AND OVER 450,000 VIDEO VIEWS ON YOUTUBE. OUR DIRECT AUDIENCE FOR SOCIAL MEDIA CONTENT SHARES THAT CONTENT WITH THEIR NETWORK, WHICH SPREADS ITS REACH EXPONENTIALLY. NBM ONLINE, THE MUSEUM'S E-NEWSLETTER WITH AN OPT-IN AUDIENCE OF MEMBERS AND FRIENDS, INCLUDED ARTICLES AND WEB LINKS ABOUT SUSTAINABLE URBAN PLANNING, ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN HISTORY, YOUTH OUTREACH, AND THE MUSEUM'S CURRENT EXHIBITIONS. AGGREGATE SALARIES ARE PART OF THE FINANCIALS PRESENTED TO THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES. THE COMPENSATION COMMITTEE APPROVES THE SALARY OF THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR. OTHER OFFICER - CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER. SALARIES ARE PROVIDED VIA AN AGGREGATE SALARY LINE ITEM BUDGET TO ACTUAL MONTHLY REPORT TO THE FINANCE AND EXECUTIVE COMMITTEES. ANNUAL INCREASES, IF ANY, ARE REVEIWED AS PART OF THE BUDGET PROCESS AND PRESENTED AND VOTED UPON BY THE FINANCE AND EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE.
