ADVISOR FRAN BECKER WAS AWARDED A CERTIFICATE OF MERIT AT THE NATIONAL CONFERENCE AS HAWAII'S OUTSTANDING HOSA SECONDARY ADVISOR. ON OAHU, TEN STUDENTS LEARNED CAREGIVING SKILLS FOR THE ELDERLY. STUDENTS TEAM UP WITH AN ELDERLY FAMILY MEMBER, USUALLY ONE OF THEIR GRANDPARENTS AND LEARN HOW TO CARE FOR THEM OVER THE SUMMER. CURRICULUM COVERS TOPICS ON UNDERSTANDING THE NEEDS OF THE ELDERLY; TAKING AND RECORDING ACCURATE VITAL SIGNS; READING MEDICATION LABELS, CULTURAL COMPETENCE - LANGUAGE, CUSTOMS, ENVIRONMENT; AND INTERACTING WITH THE ELDER'S MEDICAL TEAM. |
