IN MAY OF 2011, THE PASSING OF FREE THE HOPS' BREWERY MODERNIZATION ACT ALLOWED BREWERIES TO SELL BEER BOTH ON-PREMISES AND TO WHOLESALERS PROMPTING THE OPENING OF NUMEROUS TAPROOMS AROUND THE STATE.ON MAY 16, 2012, THE GOURMET BOTTLE BILL WAS ENACTED,LIFTING THE MAXIMUM BOTTLE BEER SIZE TO 25.4 OUNCES FROM THE PREVIOUS LIMIT OF 16 OUNCES, THUS ALLOWING SALES OF THE 22-OUNCE, 750-MILLILITER BOTTLES USED BY MANY CRAFT BREWERIES IN ALABAMA. FREE THE HOPS ALSO SUPPORTED EFFORTS TO LEGALIZE HOMEBREWING IN THE STATE OF ALABAMA. HOMEBREWING BECAME LEGAL IN MAY 2013.THESE STEPS HELPED OPEN THE STATE TO MORE BUSINESS FROM CRAFT BREWERS AND PROVIDE A BOOST TO ALABAMA'S GROWING BEER INDUSTRY.
