|---|---|
| Form 990, Part III, Line 4a: | Training of Instructors and Implementation and Delivery: Roots of Empathy ("ROE") is an evidence-based classroom program that has shown significant effect in reducing levels of aggression among schoolchildren by raising social/emotional competence and increasing empathy. The program reaches elementary schoolchildren from Kindergarten to Grade 8. Seeds of Empathy ("SOE") is ROE's "younger sibling". It is a program that fosters social and emotional competencies and early literacy skills and attitudes in children three to five years of age in early childhood settings. At the heart of the program are a neighborhood infant and parent who visit the classroom every three weeks over the school year. A trained ROE instructor coaches students to observe the baby's development and to label the baby's feelings. In this experiential learning, the baby is the "teacher" and a lever, which the instructor uses to help children identify and reflect on their own feelings and the feelings of others. This "emotional literacy" taught in the program lays the foundation for more safe and caring classrooms, where children are the "changers". They are more competent in understanding their own feelings and the feelings of other (empathy) and are therefore less likely to physically, psychologically, and emotionally hurt each other through bullying and other cruelties. In the ROE program, children learn how to challenge cruelty and injustice. Messages of social inclusion and activities that are consensus building contribute to a culture of caring that changes the tone of the classroom. The instructor also visits before and after each family visit to prepare and reinforce teachings using a specialized lesson plan for each visit. Research results from national and international evaluations of ROE indicate significant reductions in aggression and increases in pro-social behavior. Program Statistics for 2014-15: A total of 144 ROE programs and 15 SOE programs were offered in: New York; California (Oakland and San Francisco); Seattle, WA; Albuquerque, NM; and Washington, D.C. during the year, reaching 3,840 children. A total of 31 new ROE instructors and 17 new SOE instructors were trained during the year. |
| Form 990, Part III, Line 4b: | Research Expenditures: The agreement between ROE, USA and the University of Washington I-LABS, was finalized in 2011. This contract, which was initially for two years, has now been extended until August 2016. The amount of $60,000 included in the 2013-14 financial statements represents an installment towards the completion of this agreement (there were no new expenses incurred in relation to this program during the August 31, 2015 tax year). This study entails examining brain and behavioral development of 5- and 9-year-old children who have been exposed to the SOE programs and ROE programs, respectively, and compare them with comparable children who have not received the programs. The behavioral task and questionnaires that are designed to assess a child's competencies for emotional understanding, perspective taking, and experience with emotional expression, empathy, and pro-social and aggressive behaviors. Questionnaires collected from teachers and parents of child participants will provide additional information about these children. The behavioral evaluations will be implemented within the context of a pre- and post-test design. State-of-the-art brain measures (MEG* and MRI*) are being collected on a subset of children to explore structural and functional changes associated with participation in both programs. |
| Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 8b: | There were no committees during the fiscal year-ending August 31, 2015. |
| Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11b: | The organization's management gathered the required tax information necessary to complete the tax return; this initial information was reviewed by Grant Thornton LLP. The initial draft return was prepared by Grant Thornton and reviewed by management; items were discussed and reviewed. Recommended changes were reflected in the return and a draft tax return was prepared. The final return was provided to the Board of Directors prior to the tax return being filed with the IRS. |
| Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12c: | ROE, USA has a minimum of four board meetings throughout the year. At one of these meetings, all of the Directors will be requested to sign a statement which affirms that each person has received and understands the Conflict of Interest Policy. The statement requires that each Director provide information with respect to related parties and to disclose whether there are any potential conflicts of interest on a continuing basis through the year and specifically at these scheduled meetings. |
| Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19: | All Governing documents, Conflict of Interest Policy, and Financial Statements are available to the public upon request. |
