Schedule D, Part II, Line 9	The reporting of conservation easements by the Minnesota Historical Society (MNHS) relates to actions MNHS undertakes with respect to properties that MNHS monitors as the agent of the State of Minnesota's Historic Preservation Office. The MNHS undertakes such efforts with the following two categories of properties: 1) those transferred by the MNHS or another State of Minnesota agency to a third party (not itself, the state or a state agency) subject to a restriction enforceable by the State of Minnesota's Historic Preservation Office that the property will retain and have ensured its long-term historic preservation as a National Register property; and 2) those owned by an entity who has received federal grant funding in favor of improvements on the property subject to the requirement that a conservation easement be granted to the State of Minnesota Historic Preservation Office (for a specified time period) as a condition of such federal grant funding. These easements are not recorded in the revenue and expense statement or on the balance sheet or in the audited financial statement's footnotes due to the fact that MNHS does not have financial interest in these properties. In both of the above categories, MNHS undertakes and conducts a monitoring role to ensure the continued preservation of the property's historical significance and character.

Schedule D, Part III, Line 4	The MNHS' collection of artifacts, historic sites, documents, newspapers, pictures, paintings, tapes, and books preserve the evidence of Minnesota's past. The collection supports the work of the MNHS' programs and provide value to people interested in their history.
Schedule D, Part V, Line 4	The MNHS' endowment consists of 146 individual funds established for a variety of purposes, including both donor-restricted endowment funds and funds designated by the Board of Trustees to function as endowments. Net assets associated with endowment funds, including funds designated by the Board of Trustees to function as endowments, are classified and reported based on the existence or absence of donor-imposed restrictions.
Schedule D, Part X, Line 2	The Society has received a determination letter indicating that it is exempt from federal and state income tax as an organization described in Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and corresponding State of Minnesota Statutes. The Society monitors its activities and it considers the potential for income taxes if any activities are not related to its exempt purpose. The Society engages in activities that are considered as unrelated to its exempt purpose. These activities are subject to federal and state income taxes. However, the Society has a net operating loss carry-forward available to offset future taxable income from these unrelated activities. Accordingly, no federal or state tax provision is required in the current year. The net operating loss carry-forward of $201,384 begins to expire in 2022. The Society follows the financial accounting standards relating to uncertainty in income taxes. The Society had no uncertain tax positions.

Schedule I, Part I, Line 2

Grant recipients are required to sign a Grant Agreement outlining the terms and conditions of the grant award. The Agreement specifies the project start and end dates, approved budget and scope of work, reporting guidelines and other grantee requirements. The grant awards are monitored by and submitted to, upon completion, the Grants Office. The Grants Office will require and review all final project and finance reports to ensure that all federal, state and local requirements are met, as well as all of the conditions of the initial and or amended Grant Agreement. In addition, the Finance Department may perform a review of expenditures to verify allowability. The Grants Office must review and sign off on all requests for payment before they are disbursed to the grantee.

Director and Chief Executive Officer, D Stephen Elliott, as part of his original employment contract, accrues an additional annual deferred compensation amount that is placed in a supplemental non-qualified retirement plan. The amount is included on Schedule J, Part II line 1(c) in the amount of $14,375. The deferred compensation for this supplemental plan does not vest until the Director and CEO vests five years of service, at which time it will then be recognized as W-2 income. Vesting will occur in calendar year 2016.

	History Center Museum and Education: Maintains the collections used for exhibit purposes in the MNHS's museums and at county historical societies; plans, fabricates, and installs exhibits at MNHS interpretive facilities and museums throughout the state; and orients visitors and tells them stories of important events and persons of Minnesota's past. It also includes auxiliary activities and services at the History Center, such as museum shops, parking, cafe and building rental. Develops Minnesota history curriculum and coordinates the Minnesota History Day program. In FY 16 the Minnesota History Center saw total attendance of nearly 220,000, driven in part by the opening of three new exhibits; Suburbia, Beyond Bollywood and What's Up Doc. Education received top priority as MNHS launched several new educational initiatives, including the Partnership for Place-Based Learning (as well as other field trip programs), a grant funded program that allowed 750 students to participate in overnight field trips to historic sites and colleges. A primary source packet series was designed and implemented, engaging students in six complex history topics, such as the civil rights movement and American Indian termination and relocation. The History Day program continued its success as 16 of the 66 students who qualified for nationals took home awards, the most from any state. Together in Time, an outreach program created to meet the needs of a diverse, aging population earned and IMLS grant.

	Historic Sites: The Historic Sites division administers 26 historic sites throughout the state for public benefit through educational programs, special events and community activities; preserves over 140 historic structures; operates the Capitol tour program; and administers the State Historic Sites Act. Overall attendance in fiscal year 2016 totaled nearly 750,000 visitors, with many sites seeing double-digit increases to their attendance. Two of the strategic priorities for MNHS and this division continue to be the revitalization of Historic Fort Snelling and the Oliver H Kelley Farm. In FY 16 fundraising goals were met for the Oliver Kelley Farm site which will fund a new visitor center, farm support buildings, exhibits and enhanced field trips and public programming, all slated for a grand opening in spring of 2017. The revitalization of Fort Snelling continued in FY 16 with a focus on both State and public funding, as well as holding community open houses and workshops to build engagement with diverse communities. Fort Snelling and its surrounding area was recently named a National Treasure by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the first such designation in Minnesota. In addition to work at these two important sites, the priority includes the major preservation and interpretive needs of the network as a whole. Revitalization work continues to include audience evaluation and targeted program development meant to make sites more inclusive and relevant to their communities as well as more financially sustainable.

	Outreach and Preservation: Provides technical assistance and grants for historic preservation; conducts historic and archaeological surveys, as required by law; administers a grant-in-aid program supporting projects in preservation and interpretation of Minnesota history; administers the National Historic Preservation Act in Minnesota. Statewide Preservation had several major accomplishments in FY 16. The Minnesota Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit supported four completed projects with over $4 million in credits, through a state appropriation nearly $1 million was awarded in capital preservation projects and over $100,000 more in federal certified local government grants. The Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund provided more than $4.5 million, awarded across Minnesota in the form of 214 grants. In addition sixteen properties were nominated for placement on the National Register of Historic Places. The Archaeology program continued to conduct statewide field research, including major projects in the Minnesota River Valley, Lake Minnewaska in Glenwood, the Charles A. Lindbergh Histroric site in Little Falls and Swede Hollow in St. Paul.

	Library and Collections: Maintains and makes available to the public the MNHS' collection of books, newspapers, maps, photographs, works of art, oral history tapes, private manuscripts and periodicals on Minnesota history; and catalogs, restores and microfilms documents and records to make them available for public use. This program includes the acquisition, preservation and cataloging of public records, as well as the MNHS' responsibilities as State Archivist. Program accomplishments are often measured by public usage. In 2016 the Gale Family Library at the History Center welcomed just over 29,000 in-person and correspondence research requests, a number similar to last year. The Gale Library saw demand remain strong for video tutorials and new finding aids. To complement that, Library staff hosted a series of focus groups with genealogists and researchers to plan for an improved library search engine that will replace People Finder in the fall of 2016. In 2016 the first endowed position, the Plank Chair In Library, Archives and Collections was created. Digital preservation was also a primary focus, with demand growing in the digital age, MNHS developed new processes for digitizing manuscript collections as soon as they are acquired. Digitizing the State's cultural heritage, in the form of newspapers, photographs and documents remains a high priority. In addition, 2016 saw the Legacy Research Fellowship program make seven awards throughout the year.

	Publications: Publishes books and other media related to Minnesota history. The MNHS Press is a leading publisher of the history and culture of Minnesota and the Upper Midwest. The Press advances research, supports education, serves the local community, and expands the reputation of the MNHS through the publication of books and e-products, the Minnesota History journal, and the free, digital encyclopedia, MNopedia. The MNHS Press ended the year with nearly 95,000 print and e-books sold, a 4% increase over last year. The MNHS Press continued its success in 2015, seeing several of its titles receiving both critical acclaim and major book awards, including top award winners, North Woods Girl and Warrior Nation. The MNHS Press also celebrated the public launch of the book A Good Time for the Truth: Race In Minnesota, which has already been reprinted three times and has seen organized campus-wide reading programs develop at six Twin City are colleges and universities. MNopedia, the encyclopedia of Minnesota History reached several milestones, including over 1 million total pages viewed since launch and over 500 articles written. In FY 16, over 150,000 different users viewed MNopedia, a 28% increase over the previous year.
