Food Distribution: The Houston Food Banks core program is large-scale distribution of food and select other products (such as diapers and cleaning supplies) to over 600 hunger relief agencies, which then provide aid directly to more than 800,000 annually throughout our 18-county service area. In FY 2016, the Food Bank distributed over 94 million pounds of food and products. The value placed on total distribution was over $149 million in donated and purchased food to the Houston area community.
4b (Code:   ) (Expenses $ 3,591,814 including grants of $   ) (Revenue $   )
One in four southeast Texas children are at-risk of hunger, which means they dont have consistent access to enough nutritious food. Many of these children rely on school meals to provide breakfast and lunch during the school year. During breaks, such as weekends and holidays, many of these children go home to little or no meals. The Houston Food Banks Backpack Buddy program works to fill that gap by providing nutritious, child-friendly food for school children to take home over the weekend. Through the Backpack Buddy program, the Houston Food Bank, works in partnership with participating schools, schools district delivery sites, and other community partners, to ensure that the food sacks are distributed to children on every Friday during the school year. During 2015-16, 362,258 backpacks were distributed at 603 schools in the Houston community.
4c (Code:   ) (Expenses $ 828,969 including grants of $   ) (Revenue $   )
Client Assistance Program: Houston Food Banks Client Assistance Program (CAP) is focused on providing education, empowerment and connection to state funded social and health services including SNAP, Medicaid, CHIP, TANF and others in the service area of available social services. CAP staff provides application and technical assistance and can submit cases electronically to the State. In addition, CAP staff are able to issue Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards to clients in order to expedite receipt of benefits after eligibility has been determined and approved on the State level. Services are available in English, Spanish and Vietnamese (service can be provided in other languages via State interpretation services as needed).
