What is the organization's primary exempt purpose? RESTORE: THE NORTH WOODS, INC. IS A NONPROFIT CONSERVATION ORGANIZATION WORKING TO RESTORE, PRESERVE AND DEFEND THE NATURAL INTEGRITY OF THE NORTH WOODS REGION THROUGH PUBLIC AWARENESS AND CITIZEN ACTIVISM. OUR MISSION IS TO IMPROVE THE ECOLOGICAL AWARENENSS CONCERNING THE RESTORATION AND PRESERVATION OF THE NORTH WOODS THROUGH CONFERENCES AND PUBLICATIONS SERVING OVER 750 MEMBERS.

28 MAINE WOODS NATIONAL PARK & PRESERVE(MWNP) - IN 1994, RESTORE PROPOSED A STUDY OF THE BENEFITS AND COSTS OF CREATING A MAINE WOODS NATIONAL PARK & PRESERVE. DURING FY16, WE CONTINUED OUR EFFORTS TO BUILD PUBLIC AND POLITICAL SUPPORT FOR THE PARK VISION BY GIVING PRESENTATIONS, TABLING AT CONFERENCES AND FAIRS, AND DISTRIBUTING INFORMATION INCLUDING COPIES OF A FULLY REVISED VERSION OF OUR PARK BROCHURE. SPECIFIC ACTIVITIES THIS YEAR INCLUDE: QUIMBY CAMPAIGN - CAMPAIGN TO CREATE A KATAHDIN WOODS AND WATERS (KWW) NATIONAL PARK AND RECREATION AREA OF UP TO 150,000 ACRES GAINED MOMENTUM. IN NOVEMBER 2015, SENATORS COLLINS AND KING AND REP POLIQUIN SENT A LETTER TO THE PRESIDENT URGING SUPPORT OF A NATIONAL MONUMENT. PUBLIC PRESSURE WAS BUILDING IN SUPPORT OF THE PROPOSAL. WE URGED OUR MEMBERS TO SUPPORT THE QUIMBY INITIATIVE. ALL OF THE LANDS ARE WITHIN THE 3.2 MILLION ACRE AREA PROPOSED BY RESTORE AS MWNP. ON AUGUST 24, 2016, PRESIDENT OBAMA DESIGNATED KWW A NATIONAL MONUMENT. THE QUIMBY CAMPAIGN SUCCESS WAS BUILT ON THE PIONEERING EFFORTS OF RESTORE FOR A NEW NATIONAL PARK IN THE MAINE WOODS. PUBLIC OUTREACH - WE CONTINUED OUTREACH TO OUR MEMBERS AND THE PUBLIC TO INCREASE PRESSURE FOR PROTECTION OF LANDS IN THE KATAHDIN REGION. IN JULY 2015, WE PRESENTED AT THE ANNUAL THOREAU SOCIETY GATHERING IN CONCORD, MA. WE TABLED AT VENUES SUCH AS THE HOPE FESTIVAL AND THE POPULAR COMMON GROUND FAIR IN SEPTEMBER. IN NOVEMBER, WE PUBLISHED AN OP-ED IN THE BANGOR DAILY NEWS UNDERSCORING THE NEED FOR MORE CONSERVATION AND ECONOMIC DIVERSIFICATION IN LIGHT OF THE COLLAPSE OF THE FOREST PRODUCTS INDUSTRY. FROM SPRING UNTIL FALL, WE AGAIN USED THE PENOBSCOT WATERSHED ECOCENTER (FORMERLY OUR MAINE WOODS VISITOR CENTER) IN DOWNTOWN BAR HARBOR AS A VEHICLE TO REACH VISITORS TO ACADIA NATIONAL PARK WITH INFORMATION ABOUT THE PROPOSED MAINE WOODS NATIONAL PARK. WE CONTINUED OUR WORK TO BUILD A NATIONWIDE MOVEMENT TO SUPPORT INDIVIDUAL NATIONAL PARK INITIATIVES, BRING TOGETHER A GRASSROOTS PARKS COALITION, AND RALLY BROAD PUBLIC SUPPORT FOR NEW PARKS. THIS CAMPAIGN IS SYNERGISTIC WITH THE MAINE WOODS NATIONAL PARK CAMPAIGN. IT IS GATHERING INFORMATION, DEVELOPING ALLIES, EDUCATING THE PUBLIC, AND RALLYING SUPPORT THAT WILL BENEFIT NOT ONLY NEW PARK CAMPAIGNS ACROSS THE COUNTRY, BUT ALSO IN MAINE AND NEW ENGLAND. KEEPING THE MAINE WOODS WILD -FOR MORE THAN 20 YEARS, RESTORE HAS BEEN AT THE FOREFRONT OF EXPOSING THREATS TO MAINE'S WILDLANDS AND WILDLIFE, AND OFFERING HOPEFUL CONSERVATION ALTERNATIVES. IN RECENT YEARS, THE SCOPE AND INTENSITY OF CHALLENGES FACING THE MAINE WOODS HAVE GROWN. WE CONTINUE TO MONITOR AND RESPOND TO THE GROWING THREATS TO THE WILDLANDS OF THE MAINE WOODS FROM WEAKENED REGULATIONS AND MISPLACED NEW DEVELOPMENT PROPOSALS. BIOENERGY - WITH THE CLOSURE OF SEVERAL PAPER MILLS AND BIOMASS PLANTS IN THE REGION, PRESSURE IS BUILDING TO EXPORT MORE WOOD FROM THE NORTHEASTERN US TO THE UK AND EU. IN RESPONSE TO STATE AND FEDERAL LEGISLATION SUPPORTING AND PROMOTING BIOMASS ENERGY, RESTORE JOINED MASSACHUSETTS-BASED PARTNERSHIP FOR POLICY INTEGRITY (PFPI)TO FIGHT THESE BIOMASS ENERGY THREATS. AN OP-ED WRITTEN BY OUR TWO GROUPS BLASTING BIOMASS ENERGY WAS PUBLISHED IN ONE OF MAINE'S LARGEST NEWSPAPERS. MAINE WOODS THREATS - WE UPDATED AND MADE AVAILABLE ONLINE OUR COMPREHENSIVE MAP DISPLAYING THE TOP 20 THREATS. SAVE MOOSEHEAD - IN 2015, PARTLY IN RESPONSE TO RESTORE'S LONG-STANDING EFFORTS TO HIGHLIGHT THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE MOOSEHEAD REGION, LOCAL OFFICIALS UNVEILED A NEW BRANDING INITIATIVE TO PROMOTE THE MOOSEHEAD LAKE REGION AS "AMERICA'S CROWN JEWEL". MINING REGULATIONS - RESTORE JOINED SCORES OF CITIZENS IN TESTIFYING AGAINST THE DRAFT MINING REGULATIONS IN MAINE BECAUSE THEY WOULD SANCTION GROUND AND SURFACE WATER CONTAMINATION. BECAUSE OF STRONG PUBLIC PUSHBACK, THE LEGISLATURE HAS REJECTED THESE WEAKENED PROPOSALS. ENDANGERED SPECIES - RESTORE HAS SUBMITTED COMMENTS TO US FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE (USFWS)OPPOSING DELISTING WOLVES FROM THE ENDANGERED SPECIES LIST AND REITERATING THAT USFWS SHOULD IN FACT INITIATE A RECOVERY PROGRAM FOR WOLVES IN THE NORTHEAST. WE HAVE WORKED WITH NORTHEAST WOLF COALITION TO EXPAND PROTECTIONS. IN ADDITION, IN 2015 WE PARTICIPATED IN MEETINGS AIMED AT REVISING MAINE'S STATE WILDLIFE ACTION PLAN, AND ENDORSED EXPANSION OF CRITICAL HABITAT FOR CANADA LYNX IN MAINE. ALLAGASH WILDERNESS WATERWAY(AWW) - RESTORE HAS LED THE CHARGE AGAINST WEAKENED PROTECTION FOR THE AWW. IN 2015, GOVERNOR LEPAGE REPLACED THE LAST PRO-WILDERNESS MEMBER ON THE ALLAGASH ADVISORY COUNCIL. DURING 2016, THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE AWW, WE CONTINUED TO MONITOR MANAGEMENT OF THIS NATIONALLY DESIGNATED WILD RIVER.
