THROUGH FINANCIAL AND RESOURCE DONATIONS OF MANY INDIVIDUALS AND ORGANIZATIONS, THESE SERVICES HAVE BEEN POSSIBLE. IN ADDITION, THE COMMUNITY HEALTHCARE SYSTEM HOSPITALS PROVIDE FINANCIAL, IN-KIND AND PERSONNEL SUPPORT FOR MANY OF THE ACTIVITIES OF THE FOUNDATION. CANCER RESEARCH FOUNDATION ACTIVITIES: CANCER RESEARCH FOUNDATION CONTINUOUSLY SEEKS OPPORTUNITIES TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC AND PROFESSIONALS ABOUT THE LATEST IN CANCER CARE AND SUPPORTS CLINICAL TRIALS IN THE COMMUNITY SO INDIVIDUALS DIAGNOSED WITH CANCER DO NOT ALWAYS HAVE TO TRAVEL TO DISTANT HOSPITALS TO RECEIVE THIS TYPE OF TREATMENT. PROGRAMS HELD THIS YEAR INCLUDED: ANNUAL SPRING SYMPOSIUM-CANCER UPDATE 2016 HELD ON MARCH 05, 2016 FOR HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS: EXPERT SPEAKERS EDUCATED PROFESSIONALS ON LUNG CANCER INCLUDING NAVIGATIONAL BRONCHOSCOPIES AND THE IMPORTANCE OF OBTAINING ADEQUATE TISSUE FOR TREATMENT OF LUNG CANCER. THIS WAS MADE POSSIBLE THROUGH GRANTS FROM THE JOHN W. ANDERSON FOUNDATION. THE ADMINISTRATOR PARTICIPATED IN CANCER COMMITTEES FOR BOTH MUNSTER MEDICAL RESEARCH FOUNDATION,INC. (MMRF) AND ST. MARY MEDICAL CENTER. THE COMMITTEE PLANS ACTIVITIES OF THE CANCER PROGRAM AND HELPS MAINTAIN AND IMPROVE PRACTICE STANDARDS TO MEET THE CRITERIA OUTLINED BY THE AMERICAN COLLEGE OF SURGEONS. A MAJOR PROJECT OF THE COMMITTEE THIS YEAR WAS TO INITIATE THE NEW STANDARDS FOR THE AMERICAN COLLEGE OF SURGEONS AND THE NATIONAL ACCREDITATION PROGRAM FOR BREAST CENTERS. A STRONG BREAST CANCER NAVIGATION PROGRAM, INITIATED LAST FISCAL YEAR, HAS GROWN TO INCLUDE ALL BREAST CANCER PATIENTS AT MUNSTER MEDICAL RESEARCH FOUNDATION,INC. AND ST. MARY MEDICAL CENTER. IN ADDITION, THE NURSE NAVIGATOR MEETS WITH ALL BREAST CANCER PATIENTS WHO COME TO THE CANCER RESOURCE CENTRE (COULD HAVE BEEN TREATED AT ANY HOSPITAL IN NORTHWEST INDIANA AND NEIGHBORING CHICAGO AREA). CANCER RESEARCH DEPARTMENT ACTIVITIES - THE CANCER RESEARCH DEPARTMENT STAFF PARTICIPATED IN THE FOLLOWING PROGRAMS DURING THIS PAST FISCAL YEAR: - CANCER SCREENINGS (BREAST CANCER) - NRG ONCOLOGY NURSING COMMITTEE (VOLUNTARY ACTIVITIES TO EDUCATE NEW MEMBERS) - MEETING INITIAL VISITORS OF THE CANCER RESOURCE CENTRE TO PROVIDE SUPPORT AND EDUCATION OF NEWLY DIAGNOSED CANCER PATIENTS - ASSISTED WITH THE ANNUAL CANCER RESOURCE CENTRE UNITE & FIGHT EVENT - MENTORED A STUDENT FOR 250 CLINICAL HOURS FOR HER HEALTH ADMINISTRATION PROGRAM (BS) - PARTICIPATED IN THE COMMUNITY HEALTH NEEDS ASSESSMENT FOR INPUT ON CANCER SPECIFIC HEALTHCARE ISSUES THE CANCER RESEARCH DEPARTMENT OFFERS A NUMBER OF CLINICAL TRIALS LOCALLY THROUGH THE NATIONAL CANCER INSTITUTE COOPERATIVE GROUPS. PARTICIPATION IN NRG ONCOLOGY MAIN GROUP AS A MEMBER AND GENERAL NATIONAL CANCER INSTITUTE RESEARCH OF OTHER COOPERATIVE GROUPS. THE OPPORTUNITY TO PROVIDE RESEARCH FOR TRIPLE-NEGATIVE BREAST CANCER CONTINUES INCLUDING EARLY AND LATE STAGES OF THE DIFFICULT TO TREAT DISEASE. RESEARCH NOW INCLUDES A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT IMMUNOTHERAPIES FOR DIFFERENT TYPES OF CANCER. THIS EXCITING CHANGE IN THE TREATMENT OF CANCER HELPS THE BODY TO FIGHT CANCER AND HAS FEWER SIDE EFFECTS THAN CONVENTIONAL CHEMOTHERAPY. DR. AMER SIDANI AND DR. SANIA RAZA WERE ADDED AS NEW INVESTIGATORS TO THE PROGRAMS. STAFF PARTICIPATED IN LOCAL HEALTH FAIRS, CANCER SCREENINGS AND LECTURES. FUNDRAISING EVENTS: ANNUAL PERENNIAL BALL HELD IN APRIL 2016: MAJOR FUNDRAISER FOR THE FOUNDATION HELD IN THE SPRING. THIS YEARS EVENT WAS HELD AGAIN AT THE HILTON IN CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, WITH OVER 500 IN ATTENDANCE AND RAISED APPROXIMATELY $220,000 FOR OUR ORGANIZATION. TREE LIGHTING CEREMONY: THIS YEARS EVENT RAISED OVER $12,000 FOR CANCER RESEARCH. OUR HONORED GUEST TO LIGHT THE HOLIDAY TREES WAS TAMMY KRUEGER, AN INDIVIDUAL WHO PARTICIPATED IN A CLINICAL TRIAL THAT LED TO THE APPROVAL OF HERCEPTIN IN HER POSITIVE BREAST CANCER AS INITIAL THERAPY. CANCER RESOURCE CENTRE ROMP AND ROLL: THE CANCER RESOURCE CENTRES MAIN FUNDRAISING EVENT WAS WELL ATTENDED AGAIN WITH OVER 1,000 INDIVIDUALS PRESENT. THIS YEARS EVENT RAISED IN EXCESS OF $85,000. FRIENDS OF THE CANCER RESOURCE CENTRE: THIS AUXILIARY GROUP CONTINUES TO SUPPORT THE CANCER RESOURCE CENTRE WITH VARIOUS FUNDRAISERS. THE THIRD ANNUAL HOLIDAY 101 FUNDRAISER WAS HELD IN NOVEMBER. IN TOTAL, THE FRIENDS GROUP RAISED OVER $15,000 FOR THE CANCER RESOURCE CENTRE. COMMUNITY SUPPORT: IF NOT FOR COMMUNITY SUPPORT, IT WOULD BE DIFFICULT TO CONTINUE TO FULFILL OUR MISSION. WE ARE THANKFUL FOR THE MANY COMMUNITY GROUPS AND BUSINESSES WHO CONTINUE TO SUPPORT OUR ORGANIZATION AND ACCOUNT FOR A LARGE PART OF OUR INCOME. WE HAVE HAD NUMEROUS INDIVIDUALS AND ORGANIZATIONS HOLD FUNDRAISERS FOR OUR BENEFIT AND WE TRULY APPRECIATE THEIR SELFLESS EFFORTS.
