A FLAGPOLE DEDICATION CEREMONY WAS HELD IN DECEMBER. - CELEBRATION OF SISTER CITIES MONTH IN MAY. FEATURED ACTIVITIES INCLUDED: A FLOWER BASKET SALE BENEFITTING THE CORVALLIS-UZHHOROD SISTER CITIES PARTNERSHIP; SATURDAY MORNING FARMERS MARKET INFORMATION BOOTH; A PRESENTATION AT OREGON STATE UNIVERSITY ON WATER RESOURCES IN ETHIOPIA; A UKRAINIAN DINNER EVENT. - INITIATION OF AN "ADOPT-A-ROAD" CLEAN-UP PROGRAM WHEREBY CSCA VOLUNTEERS CLEAN UP A SPECIFIED STREET THREE TIMES A YEAR. A SIGN LISTING THE CSCA'S PARTICIPATION IN THE PROGRAM WAS INSTALLED ALONG THE STREET. - REVIEW AND COMPLETION OF NUMEROUS FINANCIAL POLICIES. SPECIFIC ACTIVITIES: CORVALLIS HAS TWO SISTER CITIES, ONE IN UZHHOROD, UKRAINE (IN EFFECT SINCE 1991) AND THE OTHER IN GONDAR, ETHIOPIA (IN EFFECT SINCE 2005). THESE SISTER CITY RELATIONSHIPS ARE COORDINATED BY THE CSCA - UZHHOROD COUNCIL AND THE CSCA - GONDAR COUNCIL. THE TWO COUNCILS ARE ACCOUNTABLE TO THE CSCA BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND MEMBERS. UZHHOROD PROGRAMS: CSCA-UZHHOROD COUNCIL IS AN AWARD-WINNING ORGANIZATION WITH OVER TWENTY- FIVE YEARS OF EXPERIENCE HOSTING OPEN WORLD, USAID AND CSCA-U SELF-FUNDED DELEGATIONS. CSCA-U HAS AN EXTENSIVE HISTORY OF RECIPROCAL DELEGATIONS WITH ITS SISTER CITY OF UZHHOROD, UKRAINE. MUCH OF THE ACTIVITY BETWEEN THE TWO CITIES HAS FOCUSED ON ADVOCACY AND VOLUNTEER DEVELOPMENT. CSCA-U HAS PROVIDED SUBSTANTIAL AMOUNTS OF ADVOCACY TRAINING AND SEMINARS TO ASSIST UZHHOROD VOLUNTEERS IN THE AREAS OF HEALTHCARE DELIVERY, ORPHANS, ROMA, WOMEN, AND ADULTS AND CHILDREN WITH PHYSICAL AND/OR MENTAL DISABILITIES NEW PRACTICES AND APPROACHES TO VOLUNTEERISM, AS WELL AS ADVOCACY AND THE DELIVERY OF SERVICES. MANY CSCA-U MEMBER GROUPS AND INDIVIDUALS FREQUENTLY TRAVEL TO UKRAINE AT THEIR OWN EXPENSE TO CONTINUE EXISTING PROJECTS AND TO EXPLORE NEW OPPORTUNITIES. THE TOUCH PROJECT (TAKE ONE UKRAINIAN CHILD'S HAND) IS A SPONSORSHIP PROGRAM FOR UKRAINIAN CHILDREN. THE TOUCH PROJECT HAS GROWN TO INCLUDE FIVE SPONSORSHIP PROGRAMS FOR OVER 400 CHILDREN AND IS A FRIENDSHIP PROGRAM, NOT AN ADOPTION AGENCY. EACH SPONSOR OR DONOR IS ASKED TO CONTRIBUTE 75 ANNUALLY. NEARLY 300 DELEGATES HAVE TRAVELED FROM THE U.S. TO UKRAINE SINCE 2001 AS PART OF AN ANNUAL TOUCH DELEGATION TO HELP THESE CHILDREN IN VARIOUS WAYS. THESE VOLUNTEERS TRAVEL AT THEIR OWN EXPENSE. DELEGATION MEMBERS MEET AND VISIT WITH THE CHILDREN, TAKE THEM SHOPPING FOR SCHOOL CLOTHES, ON OUTDOOR EXCURSIONS AND HIKES, AND TO MOVIES, MUSEUMS, PARKS, AND CULTURAL EVENTS. SPONSORSHIP FUNDS ARE USED TO SPONSOR SCHOLARSHIPS, REMODEL FACILITIES, PROVIDE FOOD, OFFER SUPPORT FOR HEALTH EXPENSES, PURCHASE GLASSES, CLOTHING AND SCHOOL SUPPLIES. OTHER UZHHOROD PROGRAMS INCLUDE THE OPEN WORLD DELEGATION, PATH OF LIFE ELEVATOR, AND THE ZOOSHANS PROJECT. |

WATER & WATERSHED ACTIVITIES - CONSTRUCTION OF WATER SOURCES IN THE FALL OF 2017, USING MODELS FROM PREVIOUS YEARS, A CONTAMINATED NATURAL SPRING IN ABO TEBEL GOTE VILLAGE IN RURAL GONDAR WAS DEVELOPED INTO A CLEAN WATER SUPPLY FOR THE AREA RESIDENTS. A SEPARATE CATTLE TROUGH WAS ALSO BUILT FOR THEIR ANIMALS. THIS WATER SOURCE SERVES AN ESTIMATED 75 HOUSEHOLDS. MEMBERS OF THE VILLAGE COUNCIL SELECTED RESIDENTS TO ATTEND TRAINING IN THE MAINTENANCE OF THE SPRING. - EXPANSION OF REVOLVING LOAN PROGRAM THE PRIMARY PURPOSE OF THIS LOAN PROGRAM IS TO FACILITATE INCOME GENERATION OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE RESIDENTS OF THE SAINA SABIA KEBELE (NEIGHBORHOOD/WARD). MOST OF THE RESIDENTS ARE SUBSISTENCE FARMERS AND DO NOT HAVE THE CAPITAL TO PURCHASE ADDITIONAL INCOME-PRODUCING FARM ANIMALS, CROP SEEDS AND BETTER FARMING EQUIPMENT AND TOOLS. THIS PROGRAM OFFERS NO LOW-INTEREST LOANS TO RESIDENTS SELECTED BY KEBELE LEADERS. THE PROGRAM BEGAN IN THE SUMMER OF 2016, AND THROUGHOUT 2017 AND EARLY 2018 IT WAS EXPANDED. AN ADDITIONAL 1,000 WAS DEPOSITED INTO THE FUND AND USED FOR FIVE SELECTED FAMILIES. THE BENEFICIARIES WERE SELECTED BY THE SAINA SABIA KEBELE ADMINISTRATION AND THE SAINA SABIA SAVINGS AND CREDIT COOPERATIVE. THESE TWO AGENCIES INTERVIEWED APPLICANTS AND DETERMINED THEIR LEVEL OF NEED AND THEIR CAPABILITY OF USING THE LOAN SUCCESSFULLY. PRIORITY WAS GIVEN TO HOUSEHOLDS HEADED BY WOMEN. TO DATE LOANS HAVE BEEN GRANTED TO 30 HOUSEHOLDS. - CONTINUATION OF WATERSHED RESTORATION PROGRAM IN JULY, 2017, APPROXIMATELY 205,000 TREE SEEDLINGS WERE PLANTED IN VARIOUS PARTS OF THE ANGEREB RESERVOIR TO ADDRESS ISSUES RELATED TO EROSION AND WATER QUALITY. THE SEEDLINGS WERE PLANTED PRIMARILY BY LOCAL VOLUNTEERS. THE SEEDLINGS WERE RAISED IN A NURSERY, AND CARE WAS PROVIDED BY LOCAL WOMEN WHO WERE PAID THROUGH FUNDS FROM OUR ORGANIZATION. AN ADDITIONAL 45,000 SEEDS WERE PLANTED AT THE NURSERY IN JANUARY, 2018, FOR LATER TRANSPLANT INTO THE WATERSHED. 2. EDUCATION ACTIVITIES - ETHIOPIAN CULTURAL DINNER THE GONDAR PROGRAM'S EDUCATION WORK GROUP (EWG) SPONSORED A CULTURAL AWARENESS DINNER, "A TASTE OF ETHIOPIA." APPROXIMATELY 250 GUESTS ATTENDED AND MORE THAN 3,570 WAS RAISED. MORE THAN A DOZEN VOLUNTEERS WERE RECRUITED TO HELP SERVE AND PREPARE THE DINNER. JANE KURTZ, A LOCAL AUTHOR WHO GREW UP IN ETHIOPIA, WAS THE INVITED GUEST SPEAKER. MS KURTZ TALKED ABOUT HER CHILDHOOD IN ETHIOPIA AND THE PUBLICATION OF BILINGUAL EARLY CHILDHOOD READER BOOKS THROUGH HER NON-PROFIT COMPANY, OPEN HEARTS BIG DREAMS. - PARTICIPATION IN LOCAL SCHOOLS MS. KURTZ WAS INVITED TO SPEAK TO THE STUDENTS OF THREE SCHOOLS IN CORVALLIS. FROM THIS ENGAGEMENT, THE ORGANIZATION FACILITATED A PROJECT WITH WILSON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL WHEREBY THE SCHOOL'S 5TH GRADERS DREW ILLUSTRATIONS FOR A NEW SET OF BOOKS SET IN GONDAR, ETHIOPIA. 100 CHILDREN PARTICIPATED IN THE ART PROJECT AND THEIR ILLUSTRATIONS WERE CHOSEN FOR PUBLICATION OF TWO NEW BILINGUAL EARLY READERS "THE GLORY OF GONDAR- AND "GONDAR CITY OF KINGS." - BOOKS PRODUCTION AND DISTRIBUTION THE EWG CONTRIBUTED 2,000 TO OPEN HEARTS BIG DREAMS FUND, A NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION THAT SUPPORTS LITERACY IN ETHIOPIA THROUGH FUNDING THE PUBLICATION AND DISTRIBUTION OF BILINGUAL READERS, THE "READY SET GO" SERIES. PARTNERING WITH ETHIOPIA READS, 660 BOOKS WILL BE PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED IN ETHIOPIA, THE PRINTING WILL INCLUDE THE TWO BOOKS ILLUSTRATED BY CORVALLIS YOUTH. THESE BOOKS WILL BE DISTRIBUTED IN GONDAR BY LINK ETHIOPIA, THE NGO PARTNER FOR THE EWG IN GONDAR, IN THE FALL OF 2018. - KINDERGARTEN PROJECT THE EWG CONTRIBUTED 10,000 TO THE FUND TO BUILD A KINDERGARTEN IN SAINA SABIA VILLAGE. THE KINDERGARTEN WILL SERVE AN ESTIMATED 100 CHILDREN. |
