WORK WAS ALSO COMPLETED IN COLLABORATION WITH CHAGRIN VALLEY WATERSHED PARTNERS TO IMPROVE WATER QUALITY IN THE CHAGRIN RIVER BASIN. SIGNIFICANT ACTIVE MANAGEMENT ACTIONS IN FY18 INCLUDED TREATING HEMLOCK AT LITTLE MOUNTAIN FOR WOOLY ADELGID, AN INVASIVE PEST THAT IS BEGINNING TO MAKE ITS WAY INTO THE NORTHEAST OHIO REGION. ANNUAL INSPECTIONS OF 19 CONSERVATION EASEMENTS HELD BY HOLDEN WERE CONDUCTED, INVASIVE WEED CONTROL WAS EXECUTED, AND DEER MANAGEMENT ACTIVITIES IN THE NATURAL AREAS WERE CARRIED OUT WHICH INCLUDED HELICOPTER OVERFLIGHTS TO ASSESS DEER POPULATION NUMBERS. EDUCATION PROGRAMS FOR ALL AGES THE HOLDEN ARBORETUM'S EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING ENGAGES INDIVIDUALS OF ALL AGES WITH PLANTS AND OTHER ASPECTS OF THE NATURAL WORLD TO ENHANCE FUNDAMENTAL LEARNING, APPRECIATION OF NATURE AND HEALTH AND WELLNESS. DURING FY18, WORK WITH 18,620 STUDENTS OF NORTHEAST OHIO FOCUSED ON PROVIDING PROGRAMMING WHICH ADDRESSED THE OHIO STATE SCIENCE STANDARDS. THE ARBORETUM'S SCHOOL PROGRAMS ENCOURAGE STUDENTS TO TAKE AN ACTIVE ROLE IN LEARNING. HANDS-ON INVESTIGATIONS AND DISCUSSIONS IN A NATURAL SETTING ENCOURAGE STUDENTS TO DISCOVER AND GATHER INFORMATION, ASK QUESTIONS AND BEGIN TO FORMULATE ANSWERS OR METHODS FOR OBTAINING ANSWERS FOR THEMSELVES. IN FY18, THE ORGANIZATION'S KEYSTONE EDUCATION PROGRAM, GROWING STUDENTS IN SCIENCE, ACCOUNTED FOR 11,744 STUDENTS IN 14 DISTRICTS. OUTREACH PROGRAMS ACCOUNTED FOR 1,932 STUDENTS OF THE TOTAL 18,620. THE MAJORITY OF THESE WERE PRESCHOOLERS WHO WERE PART OF THE SPROUTING YOUNG SCIENTISTS MULTI-VISIT PRESCHOOL PROGRAM FOCUSED ON SCIENCE AND LITERACY THROUGH A STUDY OF THE SEASONAL CHANGE IN PLANTS. IN ADDITION, PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES WERE PROVIDED THAT OFFER TEACHERS A CHANCE TO INCREASE CONTENT KNOWLEDGE IN THE NATURAL SCIENCES AND HELP THEM WITH PEDAGOGY RELATED TO TEACHING SCIENCE. THESE RANGED FROM ONE-WEEK GRADUATE LEVEL CLASSES TO AFTER SCHOOL SESSIONS. IN ADDITION, WORKSHOPS WERE PRESENTED AT NUMEROUS TEACHER CONFERENCES THIS YEAR. A TOTAL OF 44 TEACHERS FROM GRADES K-12 ATTENDED 8 SEPARATE WORKSHOPS. HOLDEN OFFERED 218 PROGRAMS FOR ADULTS AND SERVED 2,525 PEOPLE IN THE AREAS OF HORTICULTURE, NATURAL HISTORY, FORESTRY, ART AND WELLNESS TO ARBORETUM MEMBERS AND THE COMMUNITY AT LARGE. FAMILY PROGRAMS ARE DESIGNED TO ENGAGE CHILDREN AND PARENTS IN OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES THAT ENCOURAGE EXPLORATION AND LEARNING. FORTY-FOUR CLASSES/CAMPS WERE OFFERED SERVING 325 CHILDREN WHILE OTHER EXPERIENCES WERE OFFERED AS DROP-IN" PROGRAMS. THESE RANGED FROM HABITAT DISCOVERIES TO NATURE CRAFTS AND QUEST HUNTS. INTERPRETING AND EXPLAINING THE VARIED ASSETS OF THE ARBORETUM IS ACCOMPLISHED THROUGH A VARIETY OF ON-SITE PROGRAMS FOR VISITORS. VISITORS CAN TAKE ADVANTAGE OF GUIDED TOURS, BROCHURES, MAPS, INTERPRETATIVE PANELS, INTERACTIVE EXHIBITS, PLANT IDENTIFICATION LABELS, OR AUDIO AND WEB-BASED GUIDE BY CELL PROGRAMS THAT PROVIDE INFORMATION ABOUT PLANTS AND OTHER FEATURES. THE LIBRARY COLLECTION FOCUSES ON HORTICULTURE AND NATURAL HISTORY AND SERVES PRIMARILY AS AN INFORMATION RESOURCE FOR STAFF, MEMBERS, AND PEOPLE FROM THE COMMUNITY. MEMBERS MAY CHECK OUT BOOKS AND THE CATALOG IS AVAILABLE ONLINE AND AVAILABLE THROUGH THE ARBORETUM WEBSITE. A COLLECTION OF RARE HORTICULTURAL BOOKS IS AVAILABLE TO SCHOLARS. PUBLIC PROGRAMS AND SPECIAL EVENTS THE HOLDEN ARBORETUM SERVED 166,000 VISITORS AT ITS FACILITY, ENGAGING THE PUBLIC THROUGH ITS CORE GARDENS, COLLECTIONS DISPLAY, AND FEATURE ATTRACTIONS INCLUDING THE MURCH CANOPY WALK AND KALBERER EMERGENT TOWER, AS WELL AS A VARIETY OF PUBLIC SPECIAL EVENTS. OVER 24,000 GUESTS PARTICIPATED IN THESE FAMILY-CENTERED SPECIAL EVENTS THAT ENCOURAGE A LOVE OF NATURE AND THE OUTDOORS IN YOUNG CHILDREN WHILE BUILDING AND SUSTAINING THE ARBORETUM'S MEMBERSHIP BASE. MAJOR EVENTS INCLUDED THE FALL GOBLINS IN THE GARDEN EVENT (11,000 VISITORS) HELD IN OCTOBER AND A CELEBRATION OF TREES FESTIVAL (3,000 VISITORS) HELD IN AUGUST. IN ADDITION, THE ARBORETUM PRODUCED AN ANNUAL PLANT SALE, WINE AND BEER TASTINGS, A PANCAKE BREAKFAST, AND A SUMMER CONCERT SERIES AVERAGING 700 ATTENDEES PER EVENT.
