AS PART OF OUR ADVOCACY, WE PROVIDE EMERGENCY FOOD, CLOTHING, SHELTER, CASE MANAGEMENT SERVICES, TRANSPORTATION, COURT ACCOMPANIMENT, AND INFORMATION AND REFERRAL TO MEDICAL, PSYCHOLOGICAL, AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE SERVICES. CURRENTLY, WE HAVE APPROXIMATELY 35 VOLUNTEER ADVOCATES, AND RECENTLY CONDUCTED TWO TRAINING CLASSES OUT OF WHICH 14 ARE PURSUING VOLUNTEER VICTIM ADVOCACY WITH OUR ORGANIZATION. LEGISLATIVE ADVOCACY - IN ADDITION, WE WORK WITH OTHER SIMILAR MINDED ORGANIZATIONS TO PUT FORTH LEGISLATION THAT WILL IMPROVE THE OUTCOME FOR VICTIMS, AND HOLD OFFENDERS ACCOUNTABLE. WE HAVE PARTNERED WITH RJI TO ADVOCATE FOR 25 PIECES OF ANTI-TRAFFICKING LEGISLATION SINCE 2011. |

IT ALSO PROVIDES MORE IN DEPTH AREA SPECIFIC TRAINING TO FIRST RESPONDERS AND MANDATORY REPORTERS RELATED TO CHILD ABUSE AND ITS INTERSECTION WITH HUMAN TRAFFICKING. IN ADDITION, WE HAVE WORKED TIRELESSLY TO GET THE PREVENTION PROJECT, A 6 WEEK CURRICULUM DEVELOPED BY RICHMOND JUSTICE INITIATIVE, TARGETING HIGH SCHOOLERS, INTO AREA CLASSROOMS AND CHURCH YOUTH GROUPS. SEVERAL HIGH SCHOOLS ACROSS THE AREA HAVE PARTICIPATED AND IN 2018 NEWPORT NEWS PUBLIC SCHOOLS WORKED WITH VBJI TO CONTINUE THE PROGRAM IN THEIR MIDDLE SCHOOLS HELPING TO REACH OVER 6,500 STUDENTS WITH SOME SORT OF AWARENESS EDUCATION FOR THE YEAR. AWARENESS AND PREVENTION TRAINING IS CRITICAL TO INCREASING IDENTIFICATION AND REDUCING POTENTIAL FOR VICTIMIZATION. WE ALSO REGULARLY CONDUCT BUSINESS OUTREACHES IN AN EFFORT TO GET INFORMATION OUT TO COMMUNITY MEMBERS WHO MIGHT ENCOUNTER VICTIMS. IN 2018, WE CONDUCTED 181 PRESENTATIONS THAT INCLUDED COMMUNITY AWARENESS AND EDUCATION TRAININGS AND BUSINESS OUTREACHES REACHING APPROXIMATELY 5,000 PEOPLE. VBJI WAS ALSO INTERVIEWED REGARDING VARIOUS ASPECTS OF HUMAN TRAFFICKING IN HAMPTON ROADS VIA TV, INTERNET, RADIO, AND PRINT. IN ADDITION, VBJI PARTICIPATED IN A NUMBER OF EVENTS WHERE WE HAD INFORMATION TABLES AND PROVIDED INFORMATION AND VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES TO MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL PUBLIC RELATED TO HUMAN TRAFFICKING AND VBJI. |
