BIRTH & BEYOND PROVIDES CRISIS INTERVENTION, PARENTING EDUCATION, AND HOME VISITATION SERVICES IN NINE SACRAMENTO COUNTY NEIGHBORHOODS WHERE CHILDREN ARE MOST AT-RISK. THE FSC PARTNERS WITH SACRAMENTO COUNTY CHILD PROTECTIVE SERVICES (CPS) TO PROVIDE SERVICES TO FAMILIES WHO COME INTO CONTACT WITH CPS AND DO NOT MEET THE THRESHOLD FOR CPS INVOLVEMENT. |

YOUTH IN FOSTER CARE ARE LESS LIKELY TO ENROLL IN COLLEGE PREP CLASSES EVEN WHEN THEIR SCORES AND GRADES ARE AS GOOD AS NON-FOSTER YOUTH (15% VS. 32%). FIFTY-ONE PERCENT ARE UNEMPLOYED WITHIN TWO TO FOUR YEARS OF EMANCIPATION BECAUSE THEY LACK BASIC PRE-EMPLOYMENT SKILLS. ACCORDING TO RESEAARCH, FOSTER YOUTH ARE CAPABLE OF ACHIEVING SUCCESS IN ADULTHOOD IF THEY HAVE A POSITIVE RELATIONSHIP WITH A CARING ADULT WHO TEACHES THEM LIFE SKILLS IN THE AREAS OF SCHOOL SUPPORT, STUDY/TECHNOLOGY, DAILY LIVING, SELF-CARE, FINANCIAL LITERACY, JOB SKILLS, GOAL SETTING, AND SOCIAL RELATIONSHIPS. AMERICORPS MEMBERS MENTOR FOSTER YOUTH AND PROVIDED ACADEMIC SUPPORT, TAUGHT LIFE SKILL COMPETENCIES, AND ENSURED FINANCIAL LITERACY TO BETTER PREPARE THEM FOR A HEALTHY PRODUCTIVE ADULTHOOD. IN 2018, 29 FYI AMERICORPS MEMBERS SERVED 422 FOSTER YOUTH. IN THE MOST RECENT REPORT, 87% OF HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS GRADUATED WITH A DIPLOMA, 92% INCREASED THEIR FINANCIAL LITERACY BY 25%, AND 89% DEMONSTRATED COMPETENCIES IN 3 OR MORE LIFE SKILLS DOMAINS. THE SSB EDUCATION CAMPAIGN INCLUDES: CONDUCTING A CULTURALLY RELEVANT PUBLIC EDUCATION CAMPAIGN; PROMOTING INFANT SAFE SLEEPING KNOWLEDGE AND ENVIRONMENTS; AND PARTNERING WITH LOCAL HOSPITAL SYSTEMS AND BIRTHING CENTERS TO INCORPORATE SSB PROCEDURES AND POLICIES. THE GOAL OF THE CAMPAIGN IS TO EDUCATE PREGNANT AND NEW PARENTS, THEIR PARENTS, AND OTHER FAMILY CAREGIVERS, HOSPITAL STAFF, AND SOCIAL SERVICE AND HEALTH PROFESSIONALS ABOUT INFANT SAFE SLEEPING PRACTICES TO ENSURE THAT MOTHERS HEAR THE SAME MESSAGE THROUGHOUT THEIR PREGNANCY AND DURING THEIR BABY'S FIRST YEAR OF LIFE. IN 2018, CAPC AND OUR SSB PARTNERS TRAINED 859 PARENTS OF WHICH 287 (33%) WERE AFRICAN AMERICAN PARENTS AND 261 COMMUNITY SERVICE PROVIDERS ON THE SSB MESSAGE. A TOTAL OF CRIBS ALONG WITH SSB EDUCATION TO 354 PARENTS WHO DID NOT HAVE A SAFE PLACE TO SLEEP THEIR BABY. THE MOST IMPORTANT SSB IMPACT IS THE REDUCTION OF AFRICAN AMERICAN INFANT SLEEP RELATED DEATHS FROM TEN DEATHS IN 2012 TO THREE DEATHS IN 2016 AND 2017 AND A DECREASE IN THE DEATH RATE FROM 4.0/1000 TO 1.6/1000 RESPECTIVELY. MANDATED CHILD ABUSE REPORTER TRAINING SOME INDIVIDUALS ARE MANDATED BY STATE AND FEDERAL LAW TO REPORT KNOWN AND SUSPECTED CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT. THESE INCLUDE TEACHERS, MEDICAL PRACTITIONERS, SOCIAL WORKERS, HUMANE SOCIETY STAFF, CHILD CARE PROVIDERS, ETC. THERE ARE APPROXIMATELY 60,000 OF THESE INDIVIDUALS IN SACRAMENTO COUNTY. CAPC IS THE TRAINING PROVIDER FOR THESE MANDATED REPORTERS AND IN PARTNERSHIP WITH CPS CONDUCTS TRAININGS, INCLUIDNG BUT NOT LIMITED TO, SCHOOLS, NONPROFIT AGENCIES, MEDICAL PROVIDERS, FOSTER FAMILY AGENCIES, AND CHILD CARE PROVIDERS. IN 2018, CAPC CONDUCTED 91 MANDATED CHILD ABUSE REPORTER TRAINING WORKSHOPS TRAINING 1967 EDUCATORS, HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS, HOME VISITORS, AND OTHER PROFESSIONALS WHO ARE REQUIRED BY LAW TO REPORT SUSPECTED CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT. INFORMATION AND REFERRAL CAPC MAINTAINS AN INFORMATION AND REFERRAL LINE FOR PARENTS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS WHO WANT TO ACCESS SERVICES, FIND RESOURCES, ASK QUESTIONS ABOUT HOW TO REPORT ABUSE OR NEGLECT AND OTHER RELATED ISSUES. IN 2018 CAPC FIELDED 348 CALLS THAT LINKED 181 CHILD PROTECTIVE SERVICES REFERRED FAMILIES TO SERVICES. THERE WERE 74,565 UNIQUE PAGE VIEWS TO THE CAPC WEBSITE FOR RESOURCES. THE MOST VIEWED PAGE IS "HOW TO MAKE A CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT REPORT TO CPS". TRAINING CAPC PROVIDES TRAINING TO AMERICORPS MEMBERS AND OTHER PROFESSIONALS AND PARA-PROFESSIONALS IN MORE THAN 25 DIFFERENT AREAS OF CURRICULA, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO: TRAUMA INFORMED CARE, FAMILY VIOLENCE, CONFLICT RESOLUTION, MANDATED CHILD ABUSE REPORTER TRAINING, DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, SHAKEN BABY SYNDROME PREVENTION, SAFE SLEEP BABY EDUCATION, NURTURING PARENTING PROGRAM, MAKE PARENTING A PLEASURE, DARE TO BE YOU, FAMILY RESOURCE CENTER FUNDAMENTALS, AND ACTIVE CITIZENS.
