THESE ACTIVITIES HAVE BEEN CONDUCTED AT A LOSS. HISTORICALLY, REVENUE DERIVED FROM THE NON-CONSERVATION USAGE PORTION OF THE AFOREMENTIONED ACTIVITIES HAS BEEN REPORTED AS UNRELATED BUSINESS INCOME ON THE FORM 990-T. IRC SECTION 513 NOTES THAT IN ORDER FOR AN ACTIVITY TO BE CONSIDERED UNRELATED BUSINESS INCOME, THE ACTIVITY MUST BE (1) A TRADE OR BUSINESS THAT IS (2) REGULARLY CARRIED ON, AND (3) ISN'T SUBSTANTIALLY RELATED TO THE ORGANIZATION'S EXEMPT PURPOSE. FURTHER, THERE MUST BE A PROFIT MOTIVE IN CONNECTION WITH THE UNRELATED ACTIVITY TO BE CONSIDERED "A TRADE OR BUSINESS." LOSSES ARE INCURRED EACH YEAR WITH RESPECT TO THE NON-CONSERVATION RENTAL OF POND COTTAGES AND FOOD/MEAL AND MEETING SERVICES. AS A RESULT, THERE IS NO PROFIT MOTIVE AND THE UNRELATED ACTIVITY DOES NOT CONSTITUTE A "TRADE OR BUSINESS." THE FOUNDATION IS NO LONGER REPORTING LOSSES FROM SUCH ACTIVITIES AS UNRELATED BUSINESS INCOME ON THE FORM 990-T.
DIRECT CHARITABLE ACTIVITY - THE CENTER FOR CONSERVATION EDUCATION Form 990-PF, Part IX-A The Center for Conservation Education has provided roughly 14,000 students to explore nature on their own. The Center, located on the property, has helped teach students the complex relationships between civilization and the wise use of natural resources. The Center has also introduced them to the role that the consumptive use of wildlife has played in its conservation. Through the center, the Foundation is the leader in developing youth programming that can be emulated by others. On the 1,230 acres, McGraw leads programs in fishing, archery, shooting sports, hunting and outdoor education. The staff of the Center educate students on becoming interested in and an advocate of conservation.
DIRECT CHARITABLE ACTIVITY - THE CENTER FOR WILDLIFE FISHERIES RESEARCH & MANAGEMENT Form 990-PF, Part IX-A The Center for Wildlife Research provides answers to wildlife conservation questions by conducting high quality, collaborative research involving the continuing education of aspiring scientists. The research program is internationally known for: - Habitat use via wildlife tracking - Species response to urbanization - Investigations of human to wildlife relationships - Investigations of wildlife to wildlife interactions - Wildlife disease dynamics - Predator management The Foundation is known across the continent as a leader in wildlife conservation research and education. Much of this work has been done at the request of federal, state and local agencies, which recognize the expertise McGraw scientists bring to the table. For decades, McGraw has developed cutting edge fisheries work on rearing walleye and small mouth bass so as to improve stocking techniques and sustainability. Through extensive research, McGraw became a source for the proper and efficient rearing and release of game birds including pheasants and Hungarian partridges. Pioneering the process of raising pheasants in captivity, McGraw's work in fish and bird research impacts nationally recognized programs which drive economic efficiency and high quality resource management for state and federal conservation agencies.
DIRECT CHARITABLE ACTIVITY - CENTER FOR CONSERVATION LEADERSHIP Form 990-PF, Part IX-A The McGraw Center for Conservation Leadership is the nation's leading advocate for creative and entrepreneurial thought in conservation. Nonpartisan and not for profit, the Center's work enables informed strategic decisions rooted in economic efficiencies and science. The Center is an incubator and steward for economic efficiencies and entrepreneurial thought in conservation. The Center was born from the realization that more than $20 billion in taxpayer and private sector dollars set aside for conservation each year can be expended more efficiently. The Center is a natural outgrowth of the Max McGraw Wildlife Foundation, created more than 50 years ago by the visionary conservationist Max McGraw, founder of McGraw Edison Co. The Foundation, headquartered on 1,250 acres in Dundee, Illinois, aims to secure the future of hunting, fishing and land management through science, demonstration, education and communication. The Center's vision is to find solutions, not fault. With hopes to offer a better path for conservation going forward, the Center focuses on: - Driving greater efficiencies in conservation spending through research, innovation and communication; - Assembling teams of experts to tackle projects that will improve the outcomes for conservation efforts; - Producing individual, specific reports, programs and projects for the audience/constituent group that can put these findings to work; and - Promoting public/private partnerships for conservation The Center for Conservation Leadership is core to McGraw's mission of securing the future of hunting, fishing and land management. By leading a national drive for economic efficiency and innovation, McGraw is working to ensure that the precious dollars set aside for conservation are well spent. Without this reform, the future of hunting, fishing and land management is bleak.
DIRECT CHARITABLE ACTIVITY - CONSERVATION LEADERS FOR TOMORROW Form 990-PF, Part IX-A Conservation Leaders for Tomorrow ("CLfT") is a professional development program designed for student and professional leaders within the natural resource sciences. CLfT focuses on hunting awareness and conservation education among academic programs and government agencies. CLfT consists of 4-day workshops that blend interactive classroom discussion with field experiences. Workshop participants engage with leading natural resource professionals and conservationists in a highly interactive educational setting. The goal of the program is to identify future and current leaders of the natural resource profession who do not hunt and provide them with an understanding of the diverse values and important roles of hunting and its impact on conservation. Today, less than half of the students graduating with wildlife and natural resource degrees have never hunted and know little about it or the reasons why people hunt. These students will be among the next generation of natural resource managers who will make decisions that will impact this important conservation activity. CLfT is not intended to recruit or train participants to be hunters. Instead, our objective is to provide the participant with insights into why hunting is important from biological, social, cultural, economic and recreational standpoints and its role in conservation. To achieve these objectives, the 4-day workshops blend interactive roundtable discussions and field exercises. CLfT instructors are wildlife conservation professionals who are veteran hunters. These professionals mentor the students and facilitate the roundtable discussions and hands-on field exercises. The only cost to participants is a few days of their time. Lodging, food and transportation are provided. The few days will provide career-building benefits that are invaluable. It also is a resume and character-building adventure that truly has a lifelong impact. If this next generation of natural resource professionals does not understand the roles, values, motivations and satisfactions derived from hunting, they will be unprepared to manage wildlife effectively. CLfT now involves participation from more than 42 Universities and 27 government agencies. The program operates 12 workshops annually at 7 facilities nationwide.
