| FORM 990-EZ, PART III, LINE 28 | THE UNITED JEWISH FUND FOR CHARLOTTESVILLE (UJFC) AIMS TO STRENGTHEN THE JEWISH COMMUNITY, BOTH LOCALLY AND GLOBALLY. THIS OBJECTIVE GUIDES OUR BOARD AS WE SELECT PROGRAMS TO FUND. THE JEWISH TRADITION TEACHES THAT THE TWO HIGHEST LEVELS OF CHARITABLE GIVING INVOLVE HELPING PEOPLE IN A WAY IN WHICH THEY DO NOT BECOME DEPENDENT ON OTHERS, AND GIVING IN SUCH A WAY THAT THE GIVER AND RECIPIENT ARE UNKNOWN TO EACH OTHER. -IN 2018, WE PROVIDED 2,250 FOR THREE TEENAGERS WITHIN THE CHARLOTTESVILLE COMMUNITY TO ATTEND JEWISH OVERNIGHT CAMPS. THESE SCHOLARSHIPS WERE BASED ON FINANCIAL NEED. -WE PROVIDED 860 TO THE ROHR CHABAD HOUSE THAT CONTRIBUTED TOWARD THE PROVISION OF PASSOVER FOOD FOR 25 UVA STUDENTS, INCLUDING THE TWO RITUAL MEALS, OR SEDERS. -WE PROVIDED 6,880 TO THE NATIONAL JEWISH FEDERATION OF NORTH AMERICA'S (JFNA) PROJECT 1460. FOR 588 PER STUDENT PER YEAR, A YOUTH ETHIOPIAN- ISRAELI WILL SUCCEED IN SCHOOL THROUGH A PROGRAM THAT HAD A PROVEN SUCCESS RATE. THESE FUNDS ALLOWED 11 STUDENTS TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS PROGRAM IN 2018. THE PROGRAM PROVIDES FOUR HOURS OF WEEKLY INSTRUCTION AND DAILY LUNCH FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS. THEY ARE PROVIDED WITH ACADEMIC COUNSELORS AND MENTORS. -WE PROVIDED 16,070 TO JFNA'S PACT (PARENTS AND CHILDREN TOGETHER), WHICH PROVIDED EDUCATIONAL AND DEVELOPMENTAL SERVICES TO THE CITY OF LOD, ISRAEL'S ETHIOPIAN-ISRAELI FAMILIES. PARENTS USED THESE FUNDS TO ACCESS FAMILY DEVELOPMENTAL SERVICES, AND TO ENROLL THEIR CHILDREN IN DAYCARE. -WE PROVIDED 6,000 TO JFNA'S HUNGER RELIEF PROGRAM, AFFILIATED WITH THE JOINT DISTRIBUTION COMMITTEE. THIS PROGRAM PROVIDED FOOD AND HOUSING FOR POVERTY-STRICKEN JEWS ACROSS THE FORMER SOVIET UNION, MANY OF WHOM ARE VICTIMS OF THE HOLOCAUST AND LIVED DECADES UNDER AN OPPRESSIVE COMMUNIST REGIME THAT DISCRIMINATED AGAINST THEM. -WE PROVIDED 22,320 TO THE BRODY JEWISH CENTER, WHICH IS THE HILLEL FOUNDATION ON THE UVA GROUNDS. HILLEL'S MISSION IS TO DEVELOP RELATIONSHIPS, COMMUNITIES AND EXPERIENCES THAT EMPOWER JEWISH STUDENTS AT UVA TO TAKE OWNERSHIP OF THEIR JEWISH IDENTITY. THESE FUNDS CONTRIBUTED TOWARD FUNDING THAT ENABLED 77 STUDENTS TO TRAVEL TO ISRAEL TO GAIN IN- DEPTH CULTURAL AND RELIGIOUS EXPERIENCES, AND 10 STUDENTS TO ATTEND AN ALTERNATIVE SPRING BREAK (TOTAL COST 4,000) WHERE THEY PERFORMED COMMUNITY SERVICES FOR NEEDY FAMILIES; ENABLED HILLEL TO OPERATE THE PEER NETWORK ENGAGEMENT INTERNSHIP, WHERE STUDENTS WOULD IDENTIFY AND ENGAGE JEWISH STUDENTS ACROSS GROUNDS TO PROVIDE JEWISH SOCIAL AND RELIGIOUS CONNECTIONS; AND TO HOLD ISRAEL FEST (327 STUDENTS PARTICIPATED) ON GROUNDS TO EDUCATE UVA STUDENTS ABOUT ISRAELI CULTURE. OTHER ACTIVITIES SUPPORTED BY OUR FUNDS INCLUDED SHABBAT DINNERS (350/WEEK); AND BAGELS ON THE LAWN (150/WEEK). -CONGREGATION BETH ISRAEL (CBI) 35,981: WE CONTRIBUTED APPROXIMATELY 8,600 TO CBI'S PRESCHOOL AND KINDERGARTEN FOR SCHOLARSHIPS TO HELP PARENTS AFFORD A STIMULATING AND NURTURING ENVIRONMENT FOR CHILDREN 18 MONTHS- 6 YEARS OLD. THE PJ LIBRARY SENDS FREE JEWISH CHILDREN'S LITERATURE AND MUSIC TO THE FAMILIES EACH MONTH. UJFC CONTRIBUTED ABOUT 4,000 TO CBI'S SUMMER CAMP SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM. THE CAMPS HAVE BEEN SHOWN TO BE ONE OF THE MOST EFFECTIVE WAYS TO STRENGTHEN A CHILD'S JEWISH IDENTITY. BOTH PROGRAMS' SCHOLARSHIPS WERE BASED ON FINANCIAL NEED. AFTER THE EVENTS OF AUGUST 2017, CBI DETERMINED THAT EXTENSIVE SECURITY WAS NEEDED TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF CONGREGANTS ATTENDING SERVICES AND OTHER PROGRAMMING. OF THE TOTAL GIVEN TO CBI, UJFC PROVIDED 10,000 TO HELP OFFSET THESE COSTS. 11,000 WAS PROVIDED TO CBI'S EITELBERG SENIOR CONNECTIONS PROGRAM, WHICH HELPS DOZENS OF OLDER JEWS IN CHARLOTTESVILLE THROUGH ONE ON ONE COUNSELING, BI-WEEKLY TORAH STUDY SESSIONS, AN "AGING WISELY" CLASS, AND OTHER SERVICES FOR THEIR HEALTH, SPIRITUAL AND SOCIAL NEEDS. -FINALLY, WE CONTRIBUTED 198, OR 18 FOR EACH OF THE 11 VICTIMS KILLED IN THE PITTSBURGH SYNAGOGUE SHOOTINGS IN OCTOBER 2018. |
