HEALTHY POLICY FOR A HEALTHY SAVANNAH WITH A FOCUS ON HEALTHY FOOD FINANCING, LAUNCH OF THE MOBILITY ADVISORY COMMITTEE, LAUNCH OF THE FAITH AND HEALTH COALITION, AND WORKING WITH LOCAL GOVERNMENTAL AGENCIES ON UPDATING THE CITY OF SAVANNAH ZONING ORDINANCE. WE HAD A MAJOR ACCOMPLISHMENT IN 2018. IN OCTOBER, HEALTHY SAVANNAH IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE YMCA OF COASTAL GEORGIA (FUNDS GO THROUGH THE Y), RECEIVED A 3.4M FIVE-YEAR CDC GRANT: REACH (RACIAL AND ETHNIC APPROACHES TO COMMUNITY HEALTH) TO ADDRESS HEALTH DISPARITIES IN CHATHAM COUNTY THROUGH POLICY, SYSTEMS, AND ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE VIA THREE OVERARCHING STRATEGIES, NUTRITION, PHYSICAL ACTIVITY, AND COMMUNITY CLINICAL LINKAGES. AS A RESULT OF THIS GRANT, THERE ARE NOW FOUR FT EMPLOYEES (PAID VIA THE YMCA) AND 1 CONTRACT PERSON AT HEALTHY SAVANNAH. THE HEALTHCARE GEORGIA FOUNDATION EMPOWER HEALTH GRANT WAS AWARDED TO HEALTHY SAVANNAH IN JULY. THE 18-MONTH GRANT IS FOR CAPACITY BUILDING FOR THE ORGANIZATION. THE PRIMARY FOCUS IS TO FORMALIZE LEADERSHIP, UPDATE THE BY-LAWS, STRENGTHEN ALL POLICIES AND PROCEDURES INCLUDING FINANCE, AND TO ESTABLISH A THREE- YEAR STRATEGIC PLAN THAT WILL BE IMPLEMENTED IN JANUARY 2020- DECEMBER 2023. WE PUBLISH A MONTHLY E-NEWSLETTER THAT GOES OUT TO OVER 3800 INDIVIDUALS AND WE MAINTAIN AN ACTIVE FACEBOOK PAGE WITH OVER 2000 FOLLOWERS AND HAVE ESTABLISHED A STRONGER TWITTER AND INSTAGRAM PRESENCE. WE PRESENTED OUR SUCCESSES AT 5 LOCAL, 2 STATE/REGIONAL AND 6 NATIONAL/INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCES. WE ENGAGED IN 28 COMMUNITY EVENTS WHERE WE WERE ABLE TO COLLECT SURVEY DATA (FOR THE FOURTH YEAR) ON ACCESS TO PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND NUTRITIOUS FOOD. WE UTILIZE THIS DATA TO SUPPORT POLICY, SYSTEMS, AND ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE IN THE COMMUNITY. FOR EXAMPLE WE CARRIED THE VOICE OF OVER 2000 COMMUNITY RESIDENTS (MOST FROM UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES) TO THE SAVANNAH FORWARD MEETINGS - WHICH PROVIDED THE BASIS FOR THE CITY OF SAVANNAH STRATEGIC PLAN. THIS RESULTED IN SEVERAL GOALS BEING INCLUDED IN THE PLAN INCLUDING, PRIORITIZING BUILDING SIDEWALKS NEAR TITLE I SCHOOLS AND REDUCING FOOD DESSERTS. FOR THE BUSINESS SECTOR, PRINTED HEALTHY MEETING GUIDELINES HAVE BEEN DISTRIBUTED TO OVER 100 LOCAL BUSINESSES. IT IS ONLINE AS WELL. THE ENCOURAGE HEALTH LECTURE SERIES, IN ASSOCIATION WITH ENMARKET, WAS HELD FOR A FIFTH YEAR. ATTENDANCE AT EACH OF THE FOUR EVENTS WAS AT MAX CAPACITY (100). OUR WORK CONTINUED AS ONE OF 50 INVEST HEALTH CITIES NATIONWIDE. INVEST HEALTH PROGRAM WAS DESIGNED TO STRENGTHEN RELATIONSHIPS ACROSS ADDITIONAL SECTORS. IN SAVANNAH OUR WORK IS WITH THE SAVANNAH CHATHAM METRO POLICE DEPARTMENT, JUVENILE COURT, AND THE SCHOOL DISTRICT. THIS PARTNERSHIP RESULTED IN A BUSINESS PLAN TO CREATE A 'DIVERSION PIPELINE' SO THAT LOW RISK YOUTH PICKED UP BY THE POLICE DEPARTMENT ENTER A SOCIAL SERVICE CENTER VS. A DETENTION CENTER. THE LONG TERM IMPACT IS TO BREAK A CYCLE OF CRIME AND STRENGTHEN THE SOCIAL FABRIC OF OUR COMMUNITY. AS A RESULT OF THE BUSINESS PLAN, THE CITY OF SAVANNAH AND CHATHAM COUNTY, JUVENILE COURT, AND THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY'S OFFICE WORKED TOGETHER TO OPEN THE FRONT PORCH IN OCTOBER. THE SAVANNAH-CHATHAM MOBILITY ADVISORY COMMITTEE (MAC), ESTABLISHED IN 2015, REMAINS A STRONG TEAM. THE MAC ENVISIONS A HEALTHY COMMUNITY THAT ALLOWS ALL PEOPLE TO NAVIGATE THROUGH THE CITY AND COUNTY SAFELY, EASILY AND EFFICIENTLY. THE MAC PROMOTES SAFETY, HEALTH AND WELLNESS FOR ALL RESIDENTS AND VISITORS, USING NON-MOTORIZED AND PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION TO ACHIEVE THESE GOALS. COMPRISED OF A MIXTURE OF VOLUNTEERS FROM PRIVATE AND PUBLIC INSTITUTIONS AND ORGANIZATIONS, THE MAC IS UNIQUELY POSITIONED TO PROVIDE GUIDANCE IN THE AREAS OF MUNICIPAL POLICY, INFRASTRUCTURE DESIGN, AND DECISION-MAKING RELATED TO MOBILITY AND URBAN CONNECTIVITY, IN ADDITION TO DEVELOPING OUR OWN PROJECT DESIGNS FOCUSING ON BICYCLISTS, PEDESTRIANS AND TRANSIT RIDERS WITHIN OUR CITY AND COUNTY. THE HEALTHY SAVANNAH FAITH & HEALTH COALITION CONTINUES TO ENGAGE THE FAITH-BASED COMMUNITY TO SUPPORT FAITH-BASED ORGANIZATIONS IN SAVANNAH TO IMPLEMENT POLICIES AND PROGRAMS THAT PROMOTE A HOLISTIC CULTURE OF HEALTH. THROUGH THE REACH GRANT, FAITH ACTIVITY AND NUTRITION TRAINING IS SCHEDULED WITH AFRICAN-AMERICAN FAITH-BASED ORGANIZATIONS IN 2019. BY REQUEST OF OVER 20 DIFFERENT ORGANIZATIONS WE PRESENTED OUR MISSION AND OUR ONGOING CALL TO ACTION IN THE COMMUNITY. WHICH IS TO HELP MAKE THE HEALTHY CHOICE THE EASY CHOICE FOR EVERYONE IN OUR COMMUNITY REGARDLESS OF AGE, INCOME LEVEL, OR NEIGHBORHOOD - THROUGH POLICY SYSTEMS AND ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE USING A LENS OF HEALTH EQUITY AND INCLUSION. |
