DURING BOTH SPEAKER SERIES AND COFFEE AND CHAT PROGRAMS, FREE, SUPERVISED CHILDREN'S ACTIVITIES ARE AVAILABLE. ELEMENTARY EXPERIENCES ARE HANDS-ON TRAINING PROGRAMS DESIGNED FOR FAMILIES AND CHILDREN (AGES 7-12 YEARS) WHO ARE STRUGGLING. THE TOPICS EXPLORED DURING THE 26 SESSIONS INCLUDED MUSIC, TECH TOOLS, COOKING, MANAGING ANGER AND EMOTIONS, LEARNING FUNCTIONAL SKILLS, MINDFULNESS, AND SEVERAL SESSIONS DEALING WITH SOCIAL SKILLS. MUSIC THERAPY & MORE IS A HANDS-ON PROGRAM IS DESIGNED FOR CHILDREN (AGES 0-6 YEARS) WHO ARE STRUGGLING IN AN AREA OF DEVELOPMENT AND TEACHES FAMILIES HOW TO USE MUSIC TO IMPROVE THEIR CHILD'S MOTOR, COMMUNICATION AND SOCIAL SKILLS AS WELL AS BEHAVIOR. LED BY A BOARD-CERTIFIED MUSIC THERAPIST, THERE WERE 71 SESSIONS DURING THE 2018-2019 PROGRAM YEAR. TEACH ME TO PLAY IS A PLAY-BASED PROGRAM DESIGNED FOR FAMILIES AND CHILDREN (18 MONTHS-6 YEARS) TO PRACTICE COMMUNICATION SKILLS, SOCIAL INTERACTIONS AND WAYS TO ENCOURAGE POSITIVE BEHAVIORS. DURING THE PROGRAM YEAR, 35 SESSIONS OF TEACH ME TO PLAY WERE HELD. A NEW ADAPTED PLAYGROUP (WHICH WILL BE CALLED PLAY & SAY MOVING FORWARD) STARTED IN SPRING 2019 FOR FAMILIES AND CHILDREN (AGES 0-6 YEARS) TO ALLOW FOR ADDITIONAL PLAY AND SOCIAL SKILL OPPORTUNITIES FOR THOSE NEAR SOLON. A TOTAL OF THREE SESSIONS WERE HELD IN MARCH, APRIL AND MAY. IN ALL, MORE THAN 2,700 ATTENDED CONNECTING FOR KIDS PROGRAMMING FROM FALL 2018 TO SUMMER 2019 IN SEVEN CITIES INCLUDING ELYRIA, LAKEWOOD, LORAIN, MIDDLEBURG HEIGHTS, PARMA, SOLON AND WESTLAKE. CONNECTING FOR KIDS STAFF MEMBERS ARE PRESENT AT ALL PROGRAMS TO ANSWER QUESTIONS AND EVEN PROVIDE FOLLOW UP AFTER A PROGRAM TO THOSE THAT NEED ADDITIONAL RESOURCES. OUR STAFF HANDLES AN AVERAGE OF EIGHT TO NINE PHONE CALLS FROM FAMILIES EACH DAY ASKING FOR HELP. |

DURING THOSE SESSIONS, 50 CHILDREN WERE SCREENED BY A PEDIATRIC OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST FOR SENSORY ISSUES. TO PROMOTE ATTENDANCE AT THESE EVENTS, MORE THAN 2,300 FREE SENSORY AWARENESS KITS WERE DISTRIBUTED TO PRESCHOOLERS (AGES 3 TO 5 YEARS) IN THESE COMMUNITIES. FEATURING OLLIE THE OCTOPUS DOLLS AND SENSORY "RED FLAG" CARDS, THESE KITS HELP IDENTIFY CHILDREN THAT MIGHT BE AT RISK FOR SENSORY ISSUES. FAMILIES WITH CONCERNS AFTER REVIEWING THE KITS ARE INVITED TO REGISTER ONLINE TO ATTEND A SENSORY CONSULT. IN ADDITION, CONNECTING FOR KIDS PROVIDED PARKING LOT SAFETY KITS TO MORE THAN 250 FAMILIES DURING 2018-2019 PROGRAM YEAR TO HELP FAMILIES EDUCATE THEIR CHILD ABOUT THE DANGERS OF RUNNING AWAY FROM A CAR WITHOUT HOLDING AN ADULT'S HAND. THE KEY PART OF THIS PROGRAM IS A FREE MAGNET THAT FAMILIES CAN PUT ON THEIR CAR WHERE THE CHILD EXITS. THESE MAGNETS GIVE CHILDREN A VISUAL PLACE TO PUT THEIR HAND TO WAIT UNTIL AN ADULT CAN SAFELY LEAD THEM TO THE NEXT DESTINATION. FINALLY, CONNECTING FOR KIDS ALSO HANDED OUT 35 WANDERING SAFETY AWARENESS KITS TO HELP CAREGIVERS PROTECT CHILDREN WHO MAY BE PRONE TO WANDERING, ESPECIALLY THOSE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS.
