| FORM 990, PAGE 2, PART III, LINE 4A | THE LANA'I CULTURE & HERITAGE CENTER (LANA'I CHC) STRIVES TO PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS, COMMUNITY MEMBERS AND VISITORS TO LEARN MORE ABOUT OUR ISLAND'S UNIQUE HISTORY AND TO ENGAGE IN ACTS OF MALAMA 'AINA (CARING FOR THE LIVING LANDSCAPE). DURING 2018, AT THE TIME OF WRITING, WE HAVE ALREADY HOSTED MORE THAN 7,500 GUESTS IN THE MUSEUM, AND PARTNERED IN PROGRAMS THAT HAVE ENGAGED NEARLY 500 RESIDENTS, PRACTITIONERS AND ISLAND STUDENTS IN STEWARDSHIP ACTIVITIES. LANA'I CHC PROVIDED CLASSROOM AND FIELD LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES TO EVERY GRADE LEVEL AT LANA'I HIGH & ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, AND ENGAGED 344 STUDENTS IN PLACE-BASED FIELD LEARNING ACTIVITIES. THE FOLLOWING NOTES PROVIDE A SYNOPSIS OF SEVERAL IMPORTANT ACTIVITIES SPONSORED THROUGH LANA'I CHC IN 2018. THE SIXTH ANNUAL SUMMER CULTURAL LITERACY PROGRAM, E 'IKE HOU IA LANA'I, TOOK PLACE FROM JULY 9-20, 2018. ELEVEN ENTHUSIASTIC STUDENTS LEARNED ABOUT LANA'I'S HISTORY AND VISITED MANY SIGNIFICANT CULTURAL AND NATURAL SITES ON ISLAND, INCLUDING LANA'I HALE, MAUNALEI, KEAHIAKAWELO, AND WAIA'OPAE. DURING THE VISITS, STUDENTS LEARNED ABOUT THE HISTORY OF THE SITES AND ECOLOGICAL FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE THE HEALTH OF THE PLACE. THEY ALSO PRACTICED PROTOCOL BY CONDUCTING THE OLI HANOHANO LANA'I AT EACH WAHI PANA, OR STORIED PLACE. PARTICIPANTS LEARNED ABOUT CULTURAL PRACTICES SUCH AS FARMING AND LAUHALA WEAVING AND CORDAGE MAKING, AND THEY ALSO ENGAGED IN SUSTAINABLE STEWARDSHIP PRACTICES WORKING WITH THEIR HANDS AT MAUNALEI AND WAIA'OPAE. FOR THEIR CULMINATING HO'IKE, THE STUDENTS IDENTIFIED ISSUES AT WAHI PANA THEY VISITED AND PRESENTED POTENTIAL SOLUTIONS TO IMPROVE THOSE PLACES. THIS YEAR'S PROGRAM WAS FUNDED BY KAMEHAMEHA SCHOOLS, THE LANA'I ARCHAEOLOGICAL COMMITTEE, THE HAWAI'I COMMUNITY FOUNDATION, AND WITH STAFF SUPPORT FROM THE CULTURE & HISTORIC PRESERVATION DEPARTMENT OF PULAMA LANA'I. IN MAY WE HOSTED THE HUI MALAMA LOKO I'A ANNUAL GATHERING AT WAIA'OPAE FISHPOND, BRINGING TOGETHER MORE THAN 60 OFF-ISLAND FISHPOND PRACTITIONERS AND MORE THAN 40 LANAI COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO CONTINUE RESTORATION ON THE LOKO KUAPA (FISHPOND WALL). IN JUST TWO DAYS OF WORK ON THE WALL, VOLUNTEERS REBUILT ANOTHER 100 FEET USING ORIGINAL MATERIALS. THE GATHERING PROVIDED A GREAT FORUM FOR LOKO I'A PRACTITIONERS TO CONNECT WITH ONE ANOTHER AND PROVIDE ADVICE TO OUR LANA'I 'OHANA ABOUT HOW TO IMPROVE RESTORATION PRACTICES. THIS PROGRAM IS SUPPORTED THROUGH THE GENEROSITY OF PULAMA LANA'I, AND BY GRANTS FROM THE FEDERAL NOAA B-WET INITIATIVE AND THE HAWAI'I COMMUNITY FOUNDATION. IN PARTNERSHIP WITH MAUI OFFICE OF ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT, WE PUBLISHED A PUKE KAMALI'I (CHILDREN'S BOOK) WRITTEN BY KEPA MALY IN HAWAIIAN AND ENGLISH, AND WITH ORIGINAL ARTWORK BY HAWAIIAN ARTIST, WENDELL KAHO'OHALAHALA. THE FIRST OF ITS KIND, THE STORY IS BASED ON A TRIP TO VISIT SOME OF LANA?I'S WAHI PANA. THE BOOK IS A GREAT RESOURCE TO LEARN MORE ABOUT LANA'I AND HAWAIIAN LANGUAGE, AND IT WILL HOPEFULLY BE A JUMPING OFF POINT FOR SIMILAR PUBLICATIONS IN THE FUTURE IN JUNE, THE CULTURE CENTER ASSISTED IN HOSTING THE ANNUAL 'AHA KUPUNA IN THE SCHOOLS GATHERING. WITH 50 OFF-ISLAND VISITORS WHO ARE ACTIVELY INVOLVED IN DOE SCHOOLS ACROSS THE STATE, WE GAVE THEM A SENSE OF HOW WE ENGAGE STUDENTS IN PLACE-BASED EDUCATION ON LANA'I, THE GROUP TRAVELED TO SEVERAL WAHI PANA, INCLUDING A TRIP TO MAUNALEI VALLEY. IN ADDITION TO OUR LARGE EVENTS, LANA'I CHC HAS BEEN ENGAGED IN A MAJOR ARCHIVAL PRESERVATION PROJECT WITH THE SUPPORT OF FUNDING FROM THE STATE LEGISLATURE, GRANTS-IN-AID PROGRAM. HAWAI'I ARCHIVIST HELEN WONG SMITH HAS BEEN CONDUCTING MONTHLY ARCHIVAL AND GENEALOGICAL RESEARCH WORKSHOPS, AND WITH THE HELP OF VOLUNTEERS, PAM ALCONCEL, DEBBIE DELA CRUZ, MAX BECKER, LISA GROVE, SHELLY PREZA, DIANE PREZA, MIKALA ENFIELD, WARREN OSAKO AND KEPA MALY, THE FRAGILE PAPER, PHOTO, TEXTILES AND OTHER FACETS OF THE COLLECTION HAVE BEEN FURTHER ORGANIZED. A MAJOR PART OF THE PROJECT INCLUDES DEVELOPMENT OF ONLINE FINDING AIDS TO HELP THOSE INTERESTED IN RESEARCHING LANA'I'S HISTORY IDENTIFY RESOURCES THAT MIGHT BE HELPFUL IN THEIR RESEARCH. OUR HOPE IS THAT THROUGH THIS TRAINING OUR LANAI COMMUNITY WILL BE ABLE TO CARE FOR LANA'I'S PRECIOUS ARCHIVE FOR MANY GENERATIONS TO COME. A MAJOR PROJECT THIS PAST YEAR INCLUDED DEVELOPING PLACE-BASED LEARNING CURRICULUM THAT IS LANA'I-FOCUSED. AS A PART OF A GRANT THROUGH THE NOAA B-WET, AND WITH THE SUPPORT OF HONUA CONSULTING, WE HAVE BEEN WORKING WITH THE PACIFIC AMERICAN FOUNDATION (PAF) IN DEVELOPMENT OF A LANA'I CURRICULUM FOR 4TH, 7TH AND 10TH GRADES. THE CURRICULUM WILL ALSO BE EASILY ADAPTABLE FOR USE ACROSS ALL GRADE LEVELS. LANA'I CHC HOSTED PRELIMINARY TEACHER TRAININGS AT LHES, AND WE ARE CURRENTLY IN THE PROCESS OF FINALIZING THIS CURRICULUM, HOPE TO HAVE IT OFFICIALLY DISTRIBUTED AT THE START OF NEXT YEAR. |
