30 ODYSSEY ONLINE COURSES: GETTING THE BIG PICTURE: THE KEY TO REVISING YOUR NOVEL (HELD ONLINE 1/2/19-2/13/19, TUITION COLLECTED IN 2018), RIVETING DESCRIPTIONS: BRINGING YOUR STORY TO LIFE IN THE READER'S MIND (HELD ONLINE 1/3/19-1/31/19, TUITION COLLECTED IN 2018), AND EMOTIONAL TRUTH: MAKING CHARACTER EMOTIONS REAL, POWERFUL, AND IMMEDIATE TO READERS (HELD ONLINE 1/10/19-2/7/19, TUITION COLLECTED IN 2018). ODYSSEY HOLDS THREE ONLINE COURSES EACH WINTER. EACH ONLINE COURSE PROVIDES INTENSE INSTRUCTION FOCUSED ON A SINGLE ASPECT OF FICTION WRITING FOR 14 AUTHORS OF SCIENCE FICTION, FANTASY, AND HORROR. THE COURSES PROVIDE A LIVE CLASS EXPERIENCE USING WEB CONFERENCING SOFTWARE, AND GUIDANCE, DISCUSSION, AND FEEDBACK IN BETWEEN CLASSES THROUGH EMAILS, AN ONLINE LEARNING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM, AND INDIVIDUAL ONLINE CONFERENCES. COURSES ARE OFFERED FOR A VARIETY OF SKILL LEVELS, FROM BEGINNERS TO SUCCESSFUL PROFESSIONALS. LECTURES ARE THOROUGH AND DETAILED, ASSIGNMENTS ARE CHALLENGING, AND FEEDBACK IS IN-DEPTH. THE COURSES WERE TAUGHT BY AWARD-WINNING AUTHORS BARBARA ASHFORD AND LUCY SNYDER, AND AWARD-WINNING EDITOR/PUBLISHER SCOTT H. ANDREWS. IN THESE THREE COURSES, ODYSSEY GAVE A TOTAL OF 42 WRITERS FROM AROUND THE WORLD THE CHANCE TO LEARN NEW TECHNIQUES AND TAKE THEIR WRITING TO THE NEXT LEVEL. WE HAD STUDENTS FROM THE US, CANADA, THE UK, FRANCE, AUSTRALIA, AND NEW ZEALAND, INCLUDING ODYSSEY WORKSHOP GRADUATES, PUBLISHED WRITERS, AND TALENTED NEWCOMERS. THEY WERE ENTHUSIASTIC AND COMMITTED TO DOING THEIR BEST ON THE ASSIGNMENTS, EVEN WHEN HALFWAY AROUND THE GLOBE. THEY MADE EXCITING IMPROVEMENTS TO THEIR WRITING. GETTING THE BIG PICTURE WAS DESIGNED FOR INTERMEDIATE WRITERS; RIVETING DESCRIPTIONS WAS DESIGNED FOR BEGINNER TO INTERMEDIATE WRITERS; AND EMOTIONAL TRUTH WAS DESIGNED FOR INTERMEDIATE TO ADVANCED STUDENTS. OF THE STUDENTS WHO FILLED OUT EVALUATIONS, 8 RATED GETTING THE BIG PICTURE "EXCELLENT," 3 "GOOD-; 4 RATED RIVETING DESCRIPTIONS "EXCELLENT," 6 "GOOD,- AND 1 "FAIR-; 10 RATED EMOTIONAL TRUTH "EXCELLENT- AND 2 "GOOD." EACH COURSE HAD CLASS MEETINGS OF 90 MINUTES EACH. RIVETING DESCRIPTIONS AND EMOTIONAL TRUTH HAD THREE CLASS MEETINGS; GETTING THE BIG PICTURE HAD FOUR. ONE STUDENT SAID, "GETTING MIRED IN THE DETAILS WHEN EDITING? OVERFOCUSED ON THE PAGE-TO-PAGE ACTION, RATHER THAN THE OVERALL ARC? LEARN HOW UNIFYING CONCEPTS CAN MAKE A NOVEL FEEL MORE POWERFUL AND GIVE IT THAT SENSE OF COMPLETENESS--RATHER THAN THE MEANDERING FEELING THAT LEAVES THE READER WONDERING WHAT THE POINT OF THE STORY WAS. BARBARA PULLS TOGETHER MULTIPLE WAYS OF LOOKING AT STORY STRUCTURE AND OTHER UNIFYING ELEMENTS, TEACHING STUDENTS TO LOOK AT THEIR WORK IN NEW WAYS--WHICH IS AN ABSOLUTE GIFT DURING THE EDITING PROCESS, AND AN ESSENTIAL SKILL FOR THE NOVELIST. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED" (GRANTS: 0)(EXPENSES: 9,271.63)

FORM 990-EZ, PART III, LINE 29 THE NEVER-ENDING ODYSSEY WRITING WORKSHOP (TNEO): HELD JULY 20-28, 2018, ON THE CAMPUS OF SAINT ANSELM COLLEGE IN MANCHESTER, NH. THEY LEARNED ABOUT THE STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES IN THEIR OWN WRITING AND WORKED TO IMPROVE. MANY OF THE STORIES AND NOVELS CRITIQUED AT TNEO GO ON TO BE PROFESSIONALLY PUBLISHED. ACTIVITIES GENERALLY RUN FROM 9 AM TO 9 PM EACH DAY. PARTICIPANTS VOLUNTEER TO PERFORM VARIOUS FUNCTIONS. IN COURSE EVALUATIONS, ONE PARTICIPANT RATED TNEO "GOOD-; 21 RATED IT "EXCELLENT." FORM 990-EZ, PART III, LINE 30 ODYSSEY ONLINE COURSES: GETTING THE BIG PICTURE: THE KEY TO REVISING YOUR NOVEL (HELD ONLINE 1/2/19-2/13/19, TUITION COLLECTED IN 2018), RIVETING DESCRIPTIONS: BRINGING YOUR STORY TO LIFE IN THE READER'S MIND (HELD ONLINE 1/3/19-1/31/19, TUITION COLLECTED IN 2018), AND EMOTIONAL TRUTH: MAKING CHARACTER EMOTIONS REAL, POWERFUL, AND IMMEDIATE TO READERS (HELD ONLINE 1/10/19-2/7/19, TUITION COLLECTED IN 2018).

I FELT LIKE SHE REALLY UNDERSTOOD THE CHALLENGES I WAS FACING, AND PROVIDED SPECIFIC SUGGESTIONS AND TOOLS TO HELP ME ADDRESS THEM. I AM WRITING MORE, AND I DEFINITELY FEEL LIKE I AM MOVING FORWARD. SHERRY WAS VERY SUPPORTIVE AND ENCOURAGING AND REALLY KICKED ME IN THE PANTS TO KEEP GOING. ODYSSEY PROVIDES CONSULTATIONS TO HELP WRITERS WHO HAVE A SPECIFIC WRITING PROBLEM THEY NEED TO DISCUSS. OVER THE YEARS, DIRECTOR JEANNE CAVELOS HAS FOUND THAT ONE-ON-ONE MEETINGS WITH WRITERS ARE OFTEN THE MOST HELPFUL, ALLOWING HER TO BRAINSTORM WITH A WRITER, FOCUS ON A PARTICULAR PROBLEM THAT CONCERNS THE WRITER, AND EXPLORE ISSUES MORE DEEPLY. CONSULTATIONS ALLOW WRITERS TO SEND 2,000 WORDS IN ADVANCE, WHICH MAY BE A WRITING SAMPLE OR A DESCRIPTION OF A PROBLEM OR QUESTION. THEN JEANNE CAVELOS MEETS LIVE ONLINE WITH THE WRITER, SO SHE AND THE WRITER CAN SEE AND HEAR EACH OTHER, AND THEY CAN ALSO LOOK AT THE WRITING SAMPLE THAT WAS SENT.
