Part III line 28 continued: This training includes relationship building, developing organization ability, planning and implementing development strategies, conducting research and group problem solving. VIP EF initiates and creates materials for training and education of citizens, enabling them to manage programs for improvement of their lifestyles, the betterment of their communities and shaping of public life.Recent Highlights 2017-2018Civic Academies: VIP Education Fund (VIPEF) leaders conducted civic academies in member institutions, teaching about the states broken budget and the effects on the economy, and on education, healthcare, immigration and refugee concerns, workforce training, and affordable housing. Public Policy Institute: VIP clergy and institutional leaders conduct a multi-day training and information series about key policy issues and concerns facing Arizona families and communities.Workforce Development: The VIPEF workforce action team held information sessions about Arizona Career Pathways, a workforce development strategy designed to move participant into family wage jobs. Economics: VIPEF leaders held an economic justice workshop inviting an Arizona State University economist to teach the Arizona state budget and factors affecting economic performance. Leaders developed a program to bring that information to their own communities.Education: VIPEF leaders, both public school teachers and education supporters, held a seminar series with professors from the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers college at ASU. In this, they learned the impacts and implications of standardized testing, and they began to develop a format that would bring this expertise to conversations about testing with teacher groups across the city. Refugee Resettlement: VIPEF leaders partnered with Refugee Resettlement agencies to teach the work of these important non-profits in integrating refugees into the communities of Arizona cities and towns. Justice Reform: VIPEF leaders created a team of both experienced and new leaders and developed the skills of research by meeting with officials in the courts and prison system. They applied the knowledge gained in these interactions by developing civic academies to teach the issues and concerns in these criminal justice systems. Immigrant integration: VIPEF leaders conducted Leadership Trainings on Faith, Family and Education. The sessions included trainings for parents on the U.S. school system, and how to help children successfully navigate the education pathway in the U.S. VIPEF leaders organized immigration toolkit sessions with consulate officials, reputable immigration attorneys and local police officials to address immigration and neighborhood safety concerns in their communities. Healthcare: VIPEF leaders examined the many areas of healthcare that affect families and individuals in their congregations, developed a comprehensive healthcare civic academy, and examined the threats to the Affordable Care Act. Topics included personal medical decisions, the effect of zip codes, i.e. neighborhoods, on health, and the impact of insurance, Medicare and Medicaid programs on the health of Arizona families. Clergy Meetings: In four clergy retreats, clergy received training in issues affecting families in their congregations and how to address divisive public policy issues in their congregations. VIPEF leaders briefed clergy on their work on issues. VIPEF leaders laid the groundwork for an intensive Public Policy Series for Faith Leaders, to be introduced in the following year.Leadership Training: VIP Education Fund held leadership retreats and Leader Training Meetings for approximately 600 leaders during 2017 and 2018. New and experienced leaders learned the skills of institutional organizing and developed strategies for working on key issues in their regions.
