THE ASP FOR 2018 SERVED APPROXIMATELY 125 THIRD THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS, WHO THROUGH TEST SCORES, AND TEACHER/PARENT INPUT, HAVE SHOWN THE NEED FOR ADDITIONAL ACADEMIC SUPPORT TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN THEIR DAILY CLASSROOMS. THE ASP, WHICH IS LOCATED WITHIN THE NECEDAH AREA SCHOOL BUILDING, RUNS FOUR DAYS A WEEK FROM 3:20 P.M. TO 5:15 P.M., PROVIDING READING, MATH, HOMEWORK ASSISTANCE AND OTHER SKILL DEVELOPMENT FOR STUDENTS BASED ON THEIR INDIVIDUAL NEEDS. THE ASP IS SUPPORTED BY A COORDINATOR, EIGHT TEACHERS, SIX TEACHER AIDES, THREE COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS, AND TEN PUPIL ASSISTANT LEADERS (PALS). THE ASP STUDENTS COME FROM ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED HOUSEHOLDS, AND VIRTUALLY ALL OF THEM QUALIFY FOR FREE OR REDUCED SCHOOL LUNCH BECAUSE OF THEIR LOW HOUSEHOLD INCOME. WITH LIMITED EXPERIENCES OUTSIDE OF NECEDAH, WISCONSIN, THESE STUDENTS HAVE LITTLE EXPOSURE TO THE OUTSIDE WORLD WHERE THEY MIGHT DEVELOP AN UNDERSTANDING OF OR INTEREST IN A VARIETY OF POTENTIAL CAREER OPPORTUNITIES. THE 2,000 GRANT FROM THE SAYLOR FAMILY EDUCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP TRUST WAS EARMARKED TO FUND THE THIRD YEAR OF THE CAREER-FOCUSED FIELD TRIPS BY WHICH ALL NECEDAH AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT ASP STUDENTS ARE INVITED TO TRAVEL TO NEARBY CITIES TO LEARN ABOUT POTENTIAL CAREERS. THE GRANT COVERED TWO- FIFTHS OF THE TOTAL COSTS (INCLUDING BUSES USED TO TRANSPORT THE STUDENTS) FOR THESE FIELD TRIPS. SINCE 1987 YOUTH FRONTIERS, A NONPARTISAN, NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION BASED IN MINNEAPOLIS, HAS BEEN PARTNERING WITH SCHOOLS TO BUILD POSITIVE COMMUNITIES WHERE STUDENTS CAN THRIVE SOCIALLY, EMOTIONALLY AND ACADEMICALLY. THEIR VISION IS TO CHANGE THE WAY YOUNG PEOPLE TREAT EACH OTHER IN EVERY HALLWAY, LUNCH LINE AND CLASSROOM OF EVERY SCHOOL IN AMERICA SO THAT TODAY'S YOUNG PEOPLE MAKE TOMORROW'S WORLD BETTER. THE PURPOSE OF THE WEEK LONG PROGRAM IS TO ASSIST STUDENTS IN DEVELOPING LEADERSHIP SKILLS, INSTILL PRIDE AS AMERICAN CITIZENS, EDUCATE THE GIRLS ABOUT OUR SYSTEM OF GOVERNMENT, INSTILL A GREATER UNDERSTANDING OF AMERICAN TRADITIONS, AND STIMULATE A DESIRE TO MAINTAIN OUR DEMOCRATIC GOVERNMENT PROCESS. ELEMENTARY STUDENT COUNCIL THE NECEDAH AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT RECEIVED A TRUST DISTRIBUTION GRANT OF 100 TO SUPPORT THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN ELEMENTARY STUDENT COUNCIL FOR 4TH AND 5TH GRADERS AT NECEDAH ELEMENTARY. THE PRIMARY PURPOSE OF AN ELEMENTARY STUDENT COUNCIL IS TO ASSIST STUDENTS IN LEARNING LEADERSHIP SKILLS. THE GRANT COVERED THE COST OF DUES TO JOIN THE AMERICAN STUDENT COUNCIL ASSOCIATION AND THE PURCHASE OF ITEMS FOR RESALE TO BEGIN FUNDRAISING.
