Summary of Direct Charitable Activities Part IX-A Research $231,727After substantial investment in research in prior years, 2018 marked the formalization of a branded, updated series of digital and print research reports, each rolled out at public events called data walks, and supported by strategic information campaigns. These events together attracted more than 1,200 community residents and changemakers across such topic areas as education, housing, nonprofit capacity, and equity across key social determinants of health. The data was analyzed to inform policy, programmatic interventions, funding decisions and identify additional future research. A targeted report on countywide access to and availability of subsidized charity hospital care was also commissioned and released to city and county policymakers and health care industry leaders. Additionally, the Foundation mined 2018 biannual county health data to update and make current previously published research reports on the social determinants of health housed on its website - an important resource for grounding county nonprofits and funders in data-driven approaches to service delivery and funding proposals. The Foundation's goal is to make Pinellas County the best-informed county in the country about the state of resident health overall and the most expert at identifying and removing obstacles to health equity. Convening $96,671Convening people and organizations across sectors to change systems and solve problems is a common and powerful tool in philanthropy. The Foundation for a Healthy St. Petersburg leverages its financial resources and community capital to incentivize people to come together to undertake work that may require years of effort to come to fruition. A community group originally convened in 2016 gained momentum and coalesced around a shared countywide initiative to reduce HIV infections called Zero Pinellas. These convenings culminated in the rollout of an integrated public information, prevention and therapeutic strategy that is having measurable impact. A new housing convening was seated to take up issues surfaced by the Foundation's housing report and the group began the long-term project of developing more affordable, accessible and high-quality housing for the working poor and homeless in Pinellas County. Foundation funded partners were convened to share their experiences and offer peer learning about setting up and managing complex, multi-sector project collaborations across the social determinants of health. Community Outreach and Support $870,093The refinement of the Foundation's mission to a singular focus on health equity in late 2017 required the deployment of multiple education and outreach strategies in 2018 designed to support community knowledge and understanding of equity and its impact on health. Activities can be grouped into three key categories. 1.) Community awareness communications: to identify, define and elucidate health equity concepts and consequences. Projects and activities included releasing explainer videos; identifying, building and pitching stories to the mass media; extending the public reach of the work of equity champions by supporting and amplifying their communications tools and know-how; and launching a Foundation-led social media campaign to translate health data into comprehensible, shareable content through an equity lens. 2.) Educational programs: to increase general community knowledge about racial, income and health disparities and what is being done nationally to combat them. These activities included the Speakers Who Inspire lecture series, featuring national authors and thought leaders; Courageous Conversations about Race seminars, which trained 150 additional community partners in an effective, constructive protocol for racial healing and reconciliation; special features in the Foundation's 3,000 subscriber e-newsletter about regional and national equity trends and innovations; and an annual meeting devoted to exploring and elucidating the Foundation's health equity mission and the social science behind social change. 3.) Movement building activities: to deepen community expertise among those already taking action on behalf of health equity. Focusing on practitioners and those most engaged locally, these targeted activities included: supporting Courageous Conversation about Race alumni groups; hosting networking receptions and small-group seminars with national thought leaders and activist; investment of staff time and consulting resources in organizations and collaborative efforts to create a more equitable and healthy community.Center for Health Equity $493,687Significant staff and financial resources were designated toward planning, developing and finding a location for the Center for Health Equity. Activities included conceptualizing the Center, its operations and researching project management and technology tools to support it; locating a property; conducting feasibility studies on various locations; researching and interviewing examples of similar or related social change innovation centers nationally; and developing communications materials to define and shape the Center concept for key stakeholders. Once a suitable property was located, consultants were engaged to plan the renovation and construction of the Center and Foundation offices. A staff team structured a listening and survey process to obtain community input on the Center and crafted an RFP process to identify a consultant to undertake the listening project in 2019.
