What is the organization's primary exempt purpose? The Rhode Island Coalition Against Gun Violence (RICAGV) is a coalition of organizationsand activists who confront gun violence as an urgent public health issue. The RICAGV utilizes thecollective power of its membership and grassroots organizing methods to advance programs andpolicies that will reduce gun violence, resulting in safer, healthier Rhode Island communities.
Describe the organization’s program service accomplishments for each of its three largest program services, as measured by expenses. In a clear and concise manner, describe the services provided, the number of persons benefited, and other relevant information for each program title.
28 RICAGV impacted common-sense reform in the state of Rhode Island. In 2018, a major milestone was the passage of the Extreme Risk Protection Act (Red Flag Bill), a bill that enables law enforcement to take guns away from people that have proven to be a threat to themselves or others. With a strong collaboration from its 109 partners, RICAGV also helped to keep the dangerous Taser Bill from becoming law in RI. The organization engaged youth in the fight against gun violence. RICAGV kicked off a comprehensive youth engagement strategy campaign (YES! RI). This campaign was initiated to build off of the national momentum around gun violence prevention following the Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, Florida where 17 students and teachers were gunned down. RICAGV took action, and organized or led 17 actions to raise awareness of the facts about gun violence and the sensible reforms advocated by experts. A diverse group of youth organizations was convened to create a collaborative effort to accomplish similar goals. YES! RI worked with these groups to train youth around peace and de-escalation strategies, register hundreds of youth to vote, advocate for increased social and emotional support inschools, and mentor a new generation of leaders.
