| ORGANIZATION'S MISSION AND MOST SIGNIFICANT ACTIVITIES | Part III, Line 1: Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers exist to provide healthcare in a general short term hospital in addition to delivering primary healthcare services in the outpatient setting. The mission of Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers is to improve the health of area residents. This is the focal point that steers strategy and decision making and gives meaning and focus to staff as they go about their daily work. As long as our actions and activities are focused on improving the health of area residents, we know that we are doing whats right for our community. We carry out our mission every day by serving the hundreds of patients who walk through our doors for inpatient care, outpatient testing, emergency care, surgery and rehabilitation services. There are so many other ways we carry out our mission daily beyond traditional hospital services, including our free patient transportation service, free exercise classes for seniors, financial assistance program, education and training for pre-hospital providers, student mentoring experiences, student career exploration, free health screenings, support groups and education programs. Theres also the behind-the-scenes support that we provide for community social service agencies, including preparing daily meals for clients of Mobile Meals, providing clean linens and meals for the local PADS, meals for St. Vincent Table, and monetary support for the Will-Grundy Medical Clinic and We Care of Grundy County. |
| DESCRIBE THE ORGANIZATION'S PROGRAM SERVICE ACCOMPLISHMENTS | Part III, Line 4a: Throughout the year, Morris Hospital furthers its mission of improving the health of area residents by participating in a number of community-building activities in collaboration with other organizations. Now in its 4th year, Morris Hospitals partnership with the Morris Community YMCA continued to thrive in 2018. In addition to covering half of the facility operating expenses, Morris Hospital holds its senior exercise classes at the YMCA and encourages graduates of Morris Hospitals Phase II cardiac rehabilitation program to continue their exercise program at the Y so they can maintain optimal heart health. Morris Hospital and the Morris Community YMCA partnered together in community events including an Easter egg hunt and Halloween event. As a Resource Hospital within Illinois Region VII Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Morris Hospital is licensed to provide initial education and continuing training for area emergency medical technicians and paramedics, working side by side with local EMS providers to ensure the very best pre-hospital care for local communities. Morris Hospital also serves as the Resource Hospital for Braceville Fire Protection District, Braidwood Fire Department, Coal City Fire Protection District, Dwight EMS, Dwight Fire Department, Eco Lab, Grand Ridge Volunteer Fire Department, Grundy County 911 Center, Kurtz Ambulance, Lisbon Seward Fire Protection, Lisbon-Plattville Fire Department, Lyondell Basell Fire Department, Mazon-Verona-Kinsman Rescue Squad, Minooka Fire Protection District, Morris Fire Protection & Ambulance District, Newark Fire Protection District, Reddick Community Fire Protection District, Seneca Ambulance, and Troy Fire Protection District, assuring that ambulances are appropriately stocked with supplies and equipment; that EMS personnel meet all of the specified licensure qualifications, and that EMS providers comply with standard policies and protocol. Morris Hospital staff also helps to coordinate area disaster drills working in collaboration with the Grundy County Emergency Management Agency. Morris Hospital works in collaboration with Morris Mobile Meals by preparing daily, nutritious meals to people of all ages and economic circumstances, including children, the elderly, ill, disabled and homebound. The Nutrition Services staff at the Hospital cooks and prepares the meals daily, which are delivered by volunteers from Mobile Meals. 8,862 meals were provided in 2018. While clients pay a nominal fee to Mobile Meals, Morris Hospital is reimbursed only for the cost of the food and related supplies so the meals can remain affordable for those who use the service, with Morris Hospital covering the staff time to prepare the meals. The Mobile Meals coordinator and volunteers for Mobile Meals come to Morris Hospital every day to pick up the meals and return the meal carrying cases. Morris Hospital is a significant partner of the Will Grundy Medical Clinic, which provides free medical and dental care to qualifying residents. We demonstrate our support by providing free use of office space each month, volunteer time from Morris Hospital employed physicians, a $10,000 annual donation and support of other WGMC fundraising initiatives, and free hospital services to clients referred from WGMC. Morris Hospital provides laundered sheets, blankets and towels for the local PADS (Public Action to Deliver Shelter), in addition to providing pick up and delivery service, all free of charge, along with Saturday and Sunday meals for PADS clients. Nearly 2,000 clients were served in 2018. Along with PADS, Morris Hospital helped fund a We Care of Grundy County mobile food pantry in 2018, resulting in a total of 20,000 pounds of free food for area families. The hospitals commitment to the mobile food pantries also involves providing the manpower to unload, stock and distribute thousands of pounds of food through employee volunteerism. Additionally, the hospital funded We Cares Fill the Pantry on September 14, 2018, and provided employee volunteers to unload the truck and stock the shelves at the pantry. Morris Hospital also partnered with We Care on belling ringing for the Salvation Army at holiday time. Morris Hospital employees donated their time to ring the bell in front of a local merchant over an eight hour period on two different days. The Morris Hospitals Nutrition Services department also prepared meals for patrons of St. Vincents Table six times a year in 2018, along with staff to serve the meals. Morris Hospitals Rhythm of Our Youth screening program continued at area high schools in 2018. The purpose of the program is to detect cardiac abnormalities in area high school students that could lead to sudden cardiac death. In 2018, screenings were performed for the first time at Ottawa H.S. In the fall of 2018, a team from Morris Hospital returned to Gardner South-Wilmington, Morris, Newark and Seneca H.S.s for the second time. The screening involves detailed collaborating with the schools in order to achieve communication, coordination of schedules, and collection of permission/consent forms from the students parents. At the request of several area schools, providers from Morris Hospital provided onsite sports physicals at Minooka Junior High., Coal City H.S., Morris H.S., Newark Middle School, Mazon Verona Kinsman Grade School and South Wilmington Grade School in 2018. The schools requested this onsite service because the convenience of the service helps the athletes better comply with the sports physical requirement in a timely banner. While $15 was collected from each student who had a physical, Morris Hospital donated the money back to the athletic departments of the respective school. Morris Hospital continued to serve as a major sponsor for the American Cancer Societys Relay for Life event. For the seventh year in a row, Morris Hospital participated in Coal City H.S.s Family Wellness Night by providing fruit kabobs free of charge in the food court and a health education booth. For the second consecutive year, Morris Hospital collaborated with the United Way of Eastern LaSalle County by providing volunteers to rehab a home through Labor of Love. Additionally, the hospital collaborates with United Way of Grundy County by supporting the annual dinner and employee campaign. Morris Hospital improves access to health services by providing community members free rides to medical appointments through its free Patient Transportation Service. This occurred 14,424 times in 2018. Rides are provided regardless of whether the medical provider is associated with Morris Hospital. The service was started in 1998 in response to an identified need for increased transportation service in the county. The service is available to any community member needing a ride and is especially used by seniors and low-income community members. In coordinating the rides, Morris Hospital works in cooperation with a number of other area agencies and healthcare providers when providing this service, including Illinois Valley Industries, Elliott Manor, Walnut Grove Nursing Home, Heritage Woods, Saratoga Towers, the Grundy County Health Department, Morris Senior Center, Morris Library, We Care, Hospice, Catholic Charities, Will/Grundy Medical Clinic, Grundy County Housing Authority, and the Gardner American Legion. Many of these riders have indicated that they have no other way to get to their appointment. Each year, Morris Hospital partners with a number of area organizations to offer a Camp 911 safety program to area 4-6th graders. 2018 Camp 911 community partners included Morris Emergency Medical Services, Morris Fire Department, Grundy County Sheriffs Department, Morris Police Department, Morris Hospital, Minooka Fire Department, OSF Life Flight, Will County Sheriffs Department, MABAS 15, Will County 911 Dispatcher, and Coal City Search & Rescue. As part of a commitment to supporting our communitys future healthcare providers, the Hospital devoted nearly 2,000 hours of staff time mentoring students who are studying to become nurses, paramedics, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, lab and radiology technologists through Joliet Junior College, College of DuPage, Illinois Valley Community College, Kankakee Community College, Lewis University, Midwestern University, Swedish American University, University of St. Francis, and Grundy Vocational Center. It is imperative that these students have a place to complete their critical training. By helping students train in preparation for entering the healthcare workforce, we are helping to improve access to healthcare services in the future. Additionally, Morris Hospital continues to host high school students for summer internships through the Grundy Economic Development Council. This program is about giving local students exposure to career opportunities in their communities. |
| DESCRIBE THE ORGANIZATION'S PROGRAM SERVICE ACCOMPLISHMENTS CONTD | Morris Hospital continues to provide financial donations at the request of a number of community organizations whose mission closely mirrors the Hospitals. The hospitals contributions help these organizations meet their goals of enhancing public health or relieving government burden. In 2018, over $35,000 was donated to Kendall County Juvenile Justice Council for their 5k run to prevent juvenile delinquency; Dwight EMS for their Camp 911, Joliet Area Community Hospice for their annual dinner; Seneca, Morris and Coal City High Schools for their post prom events; Bristol/Kendall and Channahon Fire for their fire safety materials; Angel of Hope for their golf outing; Guardian Angel for their annual gala; Braidwood Police Department for National Night Out; Starved Rock Regional Center for their 5k run for child development; and Coal City food pantry, as a few examples. At the request of area organizations, Morris Hospital provides personnel to offer their talents and expertise by serving as volunteer leaders on boards of directors. In 2018, this included the Chief Executive Officer serving on the Grundy Economic Development Council, Boy Scouts Rainbow Council, and Illinois Provider Trust board of directors, in addition to being a member of the Morris Rotary Club; the Chief Nursing Officer serving on the Board of Directors for Grundy Volunteer Hospice; the Vice President of Human Resources serving on the Grundy County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, an employed nurse practitioner serving on the Will-Grundy Medical Clinic board of directors, the Vice President of Professional Services serving on the board of directors of the Joliet Area Hospice, and the Wellness Manager serving on the We Care of Grundy County Board of Directors. Morris Hospital collaborates with the Illinois Department of Aging by sponsoring local volunteers from their Senior Health Insurance Program. The program provides free health insurance counseling for Medicare beneficiaries and their caregivers, with the SHIP volunteers certified by Medicare to educate consumers and answer questions about Medicare, Medicare supplements, prescription drug plans, and Advantage plans. As sponsor of the local SHIP volunteers, Morris Hospital provides space at the hospital for the volunteers to meet with community members seeking counseling. |
