(Required for section 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) organizations; optional for others.)
What is the organization's primary exempt purpose? Our thorough analysis of community volunteer citizen science, scientific research, and work with nuclear colleagues around the world enables Fairewinds Energy Education to work with local community groups and governmental leaders to illuminate the risks and benefits of energy sources used to produce electricity.
Describe the organization’s program service accomplishments for each of its three largest program services, as measured by expenses. In a clear and concise manner, describe the services provided, the number of persons benefited, and other relevant information for each program title.
28 Decommissioning Project: We continued the nuclear plant decommissioning work we first began in 2007 with an in-depth look at the underfinanced decommissioning funds for atomic power plants. In 2016 we began technical research and testimony regarding the sudden influx of corporations vying for decommissioning contracts that are proposing an entirely new method of dismantling radioactively contaminated materials called rubblization. The process of rubblization proposes to downblend radioactive concrete with uncontaminated concrete leaving the mixture onsite since the corporations allege that the overall radioactivity remaining on sites is less toxic. Our scientific research and data collection efforts show that radioactivity in microparticles of dust and dirt may disperse significant amounts of ongoing radioactivity on site and in local surrounding communities. On both a national and international level, Fairewinds Energy Education is one of only several groups and scientific colleagues who are accurately researching and analyzing this data and releasing that data publicly. The Age of Decommissioning Project began in earnest in 2016, with Fairewinds statement that this is the era of decommissioning because more atomic power reactors are shutting down than are being built and even recently projected atomic power projects have been canceled. Disturbingly, the process of decommissioning and dismantling these once active atomic power sites is leaving an enormous unfunded toxic legacy that energy companies have failed to manage, so that ultimately this toxic waste may be left to towns, cities, and states to clean up. Moreover, some of these old power plant sites have cesium leaks and are also leaking other toxic radioactive isotopes that must decay for at least ten 30-year half-lives, which equals 300 years, and in some cases, they are contaminated with other radioactivity that will remain toxic for 250,000 years.

29 Peer Reviewed Journal Research: The scientific journal Science of the Total Environment (STOTEN) published a peer-reviewed article entitled: Radioactively-hot particles detected in dusts and soils from Northern Japan by combination of gamma spectrometry, autoradiography, and SEM/EDS analysis and implications in radiation risk assessment. Co-authored by Dr. Marco Kaltofen, Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), and Arnie Gundersen, Fairewinds Energy Education, the Journal article details the analysis of radioactively hot particles collected in Japan following the Fukushima Dai-ichi meltdowns. [Full Report here: https://www.fairewinds.org/stoten-methods/] This research was based on 415 samples of radioactive dust from Japan, the USA, and Canada, the study identified a statistically meaningful number of samples that were considerably more radioactive than current radiation models anticipated. If ingested, these more radioactive particles increase the risk of suffering a future health problem. Measuring radioactive dust exposures can be like sitting by a fireplace, Dr. Kaltofen said. Near the fire you get a little warm, but once in a while the fire throws off a spark that can actually burn you.Fairewinds and Dr. Marco Kaltofen, Associate Research Engineer for the WPI Nuclear Science and Engineering Program Dept. of Physics in Massachusetts, are continuing this work in detail from additional samples collected worldwide. Their ongoing research is currently being completed and readied for journal submission. The Japan Project is ongoing, including samples from the 4th Japan Trip [September 2017] in which Fairewinds Energy Education sponsored Mr. Gundersen and Dr. Kaltofen for two weeks in Japan to meet with citizen scientists, who were conducting community volunteer sampling and submitting data for scientific review. Previously, during his three prior trips to Japan, Mr. Gundersen taught citizen scientists how to sample dust for radiological analysis. To date, Fairewinds has determined that many cities, towns, and major roadways contaminated by the Fukushima triple meltdowns in 2011 and subsequently decontaminated by TEPCO, (the Tokyo Electric Power Corp) owner of the Fukushima Daiichi atomic power reactors, have been recontaminated. Rain, wind, and snowmelt are causing highly-radioactive fine dust to migrate throughout Fukushima Prefecture into neighboring prefectures and even to major cities like Tokyo, the capital of Japan.

30 The ongoing Book Project: Fairewinds book Fukushima Dai-ichi: The Truth and the Way Forward was first published in Japanese by Shueisha Publishing, in February 2012, just prior to the one-year commemoration of the tsunami and meltdowns. Fukushima Dai-ichi: The Truth and the Way Forward is a step-by-step factual account of the reactor meltdowns and was a best seller in Japan. People living in Japan, who read this book, contacted Fairewinds and asked to work with us to collect accurate radiological data. We have measured things like house dusts, air filters, and even car floor mats. Collecting such accurate data shows the importance of community volunteer citizen science and the necessity of open, public domain data for accurate scientific analysis. Fairewinds Energy Education continues its efforts to translate Fukushima Dai-ichi: The Truth and the Way Forward into English and add additional chapters that will update the current status of the ongoing Fukushima Daiichi induced radiological debacle in Japan.

Lectures, Symposiums, and Presentations: Fairewinds chief engineer Arnie Gundersen was the featured guest speaker and presenter for four-days in February 2018 at Wesleyan University, Middletown, CT for a Forum called Wesleyan ENGAGE. Mr. Gundersens Fairewinds presentation entitled: The Chernobyl and Fukushima Meltdowns: Their Causes and Consequences was hosted by Eiko Otake, Visiting Artist in Dance and the College of East Asian Studies at Wesleyan University. In addition to a presentation to the whole university, Mr. Gundersen also participated in five-class presentations regarding the Chernobyl and Fukushima meltdowns. The 2018 NGO Conference entitled The National Grassroots RadWaste Strategy Summit also hosted Mr. Gundersen as a presenter March 16-18, 2018. Documentary filmmaker Laura Asherman visited Fairewinds new offices in Charleston, SC in August 2018 to interview Mr. Gundersen for portions of her documentary film Power Lines. This film, produced by Forage Films in Atlanta, Georgia, details the ongoing construction delays and safety issues at Georgias Vogtle AP1000 Atomic Reactor. Ms. Asherman held a preliminary screening of Power Lines at Emory University in Atlanta on October 26, 2018, where Mr. Gundersen was a panel discussion participant regarding the ongoing safety issues and cost overruns at the Plant Vogtle AP1000 atomic power reactor. Filmed and produced by Turning Tide Productions documentary filmmaker Robbie Leppzer of Massachusetts, Power Struggle chronicles a rare victory of grassroots activists - a successful citizens effort to protect Vermonts pristine environment by working together to shut down Entergys aging Vermont Yankee atomic power reactor in Vernon, Vermont. Beginning in December 2018, Link TV and the Dish Network aired Power Struggle, the full-length documentary movie that also included key facts about Fairewinds and interviews with its founder Maggie Gundersen and chief engineer Arnie Gundersen.

Woolsey Fire Sampling Project in conjunction with PSRLA (Physicians for Social Responsibility Los Angeles) and WPI University in Worcester, Massachusetts: This project began in mid-December 2018, following the November 2018 California Woolsey Fire within 35-miles of Los Angeles (LA). The communities impacted by the Woolsey Fire are worried about airborne radioactivity because the Woolsey Fire burned the area around and adjacent to the Santa Susana Field Lab (SSFL), an old nuclear test facility with 10 atomic test reactors. The SSFL experienced the first nuclear meltdown in 1959, which was covered up for by the federal government and the companies involved for more than 20-years. Vegetation in close proximity to the site may have high levels of toxic and possibly radioactive materials stored within them due to nutrient uptake through their roots. Fairewinds Energy Education wrote sampling protocols and procedures for community volunteer citizen scientists to collect a wide set of dust samples generated by the fire from as many of the surrounding areas close to the site as possible. Fairewinds utilizes the power of citizen scientists to collect soil and dust samples, so that we and the scientific colleagues we work with may more accurately assess if Santa Susana radioactive isotopes are migrating into the surrounding communities or the pristine forest parks that hikers and explorers from all over the world.
