FORM 990, PART III, LINE 1, MISSION STATEMENT: UNITED WAY NCA FIGHTS FOR THE HEALTH, EDUCATION AND FINANCIAL STABILITY OF EVERY PERSON IN OUR COMMUNITY. UNITED WAY NCA PURSUES ITS MISSION BY UNITING PARTNER NONPROFITS AS WELL AS CORPORATE AND COMMUNITY PARTNERS. WE'RE COMMITTED TO CREATING A STRONG, VIBRANT COMMUNITY WITH EXCELLENT SCHOOLS, GOOD HEALTH, SAFE NEIGBORHOODS AND JOBS THAT PAY A LIVABLE WAGE. TOGETHER WE LIVE UNITED. QUALITY EDUCATION: OUR GOAL IS TO PREPARE 12,000 TITLE I MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS TO TRANSITION TO HIGH SCHOOL PERFORMING AT GRADE LEVEL AND ON TRACK TO SUCCEED BY 2020. RESEARCH SHOWS THAT MOST STUDENTS WHO ARE AT RISK OF DROPPING OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL WERE ALSO STRUGGLING DURING MIDDLE SCHOOL. IN OUR COMMUNITY, CHILDREN LIVING IN POVERTY FACE NUMEROUS BARRIERS TO ACHIEVING ACADEMIC SUCCESS AND OVERALL WELLNESS, INCLUDING A LACK OF ACADEMIC SUPPORT, PARENTAL ENGAGEMENT AND LIMITED ACCESS TO MEDICAL AND DENTAL CARE. TO INCREASE HIGH SCHOOL PREPAREDNESS FOR LOW INCOME STUDENTS IN OUR COMMUNITY, WE ARE CONVENING PARTNERS IN TARGETED MIDDLE SCHOOLS TO PROVIDE SERVICES THAT ADDRESS BARRIERS AND HELP CHILDREN SUCCEED. WE BRING PARTNERS TOGETHER TO PROVIDE WRAPAROUND SERVICES THAT ADDRESS THE ACADEMIC AND NONACADEMIC NEEDS OF LOW-INCOME STUDENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES, AND PREPARE STUDENTS TO TRANSITION SUCCESSFULLY TO HIGH SCHOOL PERFORMING AT GRADE LEVEL. OUR PLAN BENEFITS EACH OF THE EIGHT REGIONS WE SERVE. IN ADDITION, STUDENTS WILL HAVE ACCESS TO REGULAR OPPORTUNITIES TO PARTICIPATE IN PHYSICAL FITNESS AND HEALTH AND WELLNESS ACTIVITIES. AS PART OF OUR WORK TO HELP FAMILIES ACHIEVE FINANCIAL STABILITY, WE WILL OFFER PARENTS AT PARTICIPATING SCHOOLS MONEY MANAGEMENT COUNSELING, FINANCIAL PLANNING AND OTHER SERVICES TO ASSIST THEM IN CREATING A BUDGET, SAVING MONEY AND PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE. AS WE CONTINUE THE WORK OF OUR REGIONAL INITIATIVE, WE HAVE PARTNERED WITH A VARIETY OF SCHOOLS AND ORGANIZATIONS. IN THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, WE WORK WITH (I) CITY YEAR DC, WHICH IS EMBEDDED WITHIN KELLY MILLER MIDDLE SCHOOL AND NEVAL THOMAS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL; AND (II) COMMUNITIES IN SCHOOLS OF THE NATION'S CAPITAL, WHICH IS EMBEDDED WITHIN JOHN HAYDEN JOHNSON, KRAMMER, AND BROOKLAND MIDDLE SCHOOLS AND THE CARDOZO EDUCATION CAMPUS. IN PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, WE WORK WITH THE LATIN AMERICAN YOUTH CENTER, WHICH IS EMBEDDED WITHIN BUCK LODGE AND WILLIAM WIRT MIDDLE SCHOOLS. IN THE CITY OF ALEXANDRIA, WE WORK WITH COMMUNITIES IN SCHOOLS OF NORTHERN VIRGINIA, WHICH IS EMBEDDED WITHIN FRANCIS C. HAMMOND MIDDLE SCHOOL. AND IN MONTGOMERY COUNTY, WE WORK WITH EVERMIND (LINKAGES TO LEARNING), WHICH IS EMBEDDED WITHIN A. LOIDERMAN MIDDLE SCHOOL. FINANCIAL STABILITY: OUR GOAL IS TO HELP 100,000 PEOPLE ACHIEVE FINANCIAL STABILITY AND REMOVE BARRIERS TO STABLE AND AFFORDABLE HOUSING BY 2020. IN OUR COMMUNITY, APPROXIMATELY 260,000 RESIDENTS BELONG TO A HOUSEHOLD THAT IS "UNBANKED," MEANING THEY ARE NOT CONNECTED WITH MAINSTREAM BANKING SERVICES AND MAY BE USING PREDATORY SERVICES TO MAKE ENDS MEET. ALSO, MORE THAN 12,000 AREA RESIDENTS EXPERIENCE HOMELESSNESS OR ARE AT RISK OF HOMELESSNESS AT ANY GIVEN TIME. THEY FACE NUMEROUS BARRIERS TO ACCESSING STABLE HOUSING. WE ARE INVESTING IN PROGRAMS AND INITIATIVES THAT HELP INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES IN THE NATIONAL CAPITAL AREA ACHIEVE FINANCIAL STABILITY. WE ALREADY HAVE AND WILL CONTINUE TO OPEN AND REPLICATE FINANCIAL EMPOWERMENT CENTERS (FEC) ACROSS THE REGION TO PROVIDE CENTRALIZED AND CONVENIENT LOCATIONS FOR AREA INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES TO OBTAIN COMPREHENSIVE SERVICES TO HELP THEM ADVANCE ON A PATH TOWARD FINANCIAL STABILITY. THESE SERVICES WILL INCLUDE MONEY MANAGEMENT COUNSELING, CREDIT AND HOUSING COUNSELING, ASSET-BUILDING RESOURCES AND ACCESS TO FREE OR LOW COST BANKING PRODUCTS. THE FIRST FINANCIAL EMPOWERMENT CENTER OPENED IN 2016 IN PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY THROUGH A PARTNERSHIP WITH PRINCE GEORGE'S COMMUNITY COLLEGE. SINCE THEN, WE HAVE REPLICATED FINANCIAL EMPOWERMENT CENTERS IN SOUTH COUNTY AREAS OF FAIRFAX AND IN THE SKYLAND AREA OF WASHINGTON DC (AT THE CROSS ROADS OF WARDS 7 AND 9). WE WILL INVEST IN AFFORDABLE HOUSING THROUGH THE PURCHASE OF COMMUNITY IMPACT NOTES, WHICH ARE SOCIALLY-RESPONSIBLE INVESTMENTS USED TO INCREASE THE STOCK OF AFFORDABLE HOMES AVAILABLE IN THE REGION. THROUGH PROJECT HOMELESS CONNECT, WE PROVIDE HOMELESS INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES WITH A CONVENIENT WAY TO SECURE MEDICAL CARE, EMPLOYMENT SERVICES, AND OTHER RESOURCES. IN COLLABORATION WITH OUR COMMUNITY PARTNERS AND VITA SITES, WE PROVIDE LOW-INCOME RESIDENTS WITH FREE TAX PREPARATION ASSISTANCE TO HELP THEM MAXIMIZE AVAILABLE CREDITS AND RECEIVE TAX REFUNDS. THROUGH OUR PARTNERSHIP, LAST YEAR WE HELPED LOCAL FAMILIES RECEIVE A TOTAL OF $17.3 MILLION IN TAX REFUNDS. GOOD HEALTH: WE BELIEVE THAT IN ORDER FOR A COMMUNITY TO THRIVE, ITS MEMBERS MUST BE HEALTHY.
