| Return Reference | Explanation |
|---|---|
| Other | This Federal Form 990EZ is reviewed by the Treasurer and then by the full Board prior to filing. |
| Other | ADVOCACY ACTION IMPACT |
| Other | When you call NJ Aid for Animals (NJAFA), you are greeted with this message: "You've called us because you have an animal problem you need help with." |
| Other | No other animal welfare organization in S. Jersey is available for help for animals 24/7 including holidays. Since 2005 we have been boots on the ground as all volunteers with no brick and mortar building, no government funding and no municipal funding. We have been able to deliver all our programs with only donations from the public. NJAFA runs very lean and counts on the support of its volunteers, board of directors and advisory allowing us to save thousands of dollars each year on professional services which funding can go to the animals. |
| Other | Guidestar who is the watchdog of charities gives NJAFA a Platinum Level of Transparency which is the highest level a charity can receive due to us sharing our financials. |
| Other | NJAFA amazes its donors by stretching the dollars they donate as we wheel and deal because we know it is not our money. It is the money of our donors who trust us to leverage ourselves to obtain the best services for helping animals without sacrificing quality. |
| Other | Our board includes the attorney that wrote the Amicus Brief that got the Michael Vick dogs to Best Friends, a veterinarian and an internationally known dog bite expert. Our Advisory Board who lend their expertise to NJAFA includes another lawyer, a social media expert, a nonprofit CPA, and the president of a PR agency. |
| Other | In order to maintain transparency, compliance and check and balance of books we pay an independent consultant bookkeeper that is not connected to our board or advisory board. |
| Other | Volunteers continue to donate by tabling at events for NJAFA, fostering animals, transporting animals, planning and implementing fundraisers, clerical tasks, cleaning, a para-legal to do research and myriad "other" volunteers. |
| Other | VETERINARY SERVICES |
| Other | In 2018 we provided direct support for veterinary services, animal supplies, medicine and food for animals that would otherwise have gone without. We wrapped up our 250 Days of Spay by helping feral cat caregivers offset surgery and fixed 250 feral cats. Our very successful HALT (Helping Animals Lives Today) also ended in 2018. We only had enough funds for 200 but because we parlayed the grant money and used it carefully, we exceeded our goal by 35% totaling 270 dogs and cats that received a spay-neuter, flea treatment, a microchip, vaccines and a license in the City of Camden. |
| Other | DELIVERING DISEASE PREVENTION |
| Other | No other animal welfare organization delivers free disease prevention and health promotion though our Pets in the City. In 2018 we hosted our 11th Annual Event in Camden, NJ and donated 378 vaccines. NJ Aid for Animals also donates leashes, collars, cat carriers, and dog bowls. In 2018, we raised funds to purchase Bravecto which is a three month flea treatment for the large dogs that are forced to live outside and one of the reasons dogs are surrendered in the summer due to fleas. |
| Other | ANIMAL ABUSE |
| Other | NJ Aid for Animals is the only animal welfare organization in S Jersey that is involved with animal cruelty. With the New Jersey Society for the prevention of Animals as the entity that had the authority to write summons on Title Four violations of animal cruelty losing their authority in 2018 from the Attorney General's office NJ Aid for Animals became even more involved than before. Our president has her certification in Animal Cruelty and knows Title Four very well. |
| Other | We drove all over S. Jersey to investigate reports of cruelty, to court, transported animals that needed help and attended workshops to learn about changes to Title Four and new cruelty statues and law and attended The National Conference on Animal Abuse. |
| Other | We assisted rescue partners with animals found in cruelty. |
| Other | While investigating cruelty of a dog we found a father and two piglets that had been abandoned. We worked with our partners in farm sanctuary to take the pigs and nurse them to health. |
| Other | We paid for the necropsy and cremation of animals we found deceased. |
| Other | Our own long term dog rescued from dog fighters in Camden was declared by the State Senate and Assembly as the Official Face of Dog Fighting Awareness for New Jersey. |
| Other | NJ Aid for Animals gets leads on individuals in Camden, NJ intentionally breeding dogs where it is illegal and report them which means we are witnesses involving many trips to Municipal Court. |
| Other | We also funded a dog that needed rehabilitation training and she is in a wonderful home. |
| Other | In addition to all the animals we help find homes and network for there are some which are very hard to place. Because we are a no-kill rescue, we have two long term foster dogs and eight cats, iincluding six ferals we support at NJ Aid for Animals. |
| Other | SOLUTIONS TO ANIMAL ISSUES HELP PEOPLE TOO |
| Other | We are a clearinghouse of information for pet owners and a great resource for people reaching out with pet problems. Even other animal charities call NJAFA for guidance, information, resource sharing, and general questions, We receive dozens of calls and emails every day from people all over the State of NJ who either need to give up an animal, don't have food, can't afford medical treatment or myriad of other reasons. We offer a list of medical financial aid organizations, low cost vet services, help to rehome an animal, offer food if they can't afford or just try to walk the individual through the problem and find a solution together. By resolving ways to keep a pet at home, it reduces the number of animals going through the impound facilities (shelters). |
| Other | NJAFA works very closely with local animal control who will alert NJAFA of a family that may want to surrender their pet but we can help the family keep the pet by something as simple as a flea treatment! We pride ourselves on solving a pet owners' issue and actually circumventing it right from the shelter. |
| Other | COMMUNITY OUTREACH COLLABORATION |
| Other | Whether collaborating with the local fire dept. in Camden, or other organizations to network an animal, NJAFA's President is on the board of an organization in Camden made up of other social service agencies, private businesses and other non-profits to recognize and collaborate on the animal problems within that area. Firemen only came out to assist NJ Aid for Animals for a cat in a tree for three days in Camden because of our great relationship. They were told they could not come. |
| Other | TEMPORARILY RESTRICTED FUNDS BY THE BOARD |
| Other | NJ Aid for Animals is driving a very unsafe 17 year old vehicle. Given the amount of driving we do in dangerous situations and areas, we need brakes and windows that work and for the safety of the animals we transport, air and heat. We have earmarked $20K to purchase a used vehicle. |
| Other | A long term dog had ACL surgery in 2016 and needs her other leg done. A donor has pledged $3K to replace the dogs other ACL. Those funds are on reserve for the dog. |
| Other | Restricted medical fund of $917 that we use for medical animal emergencies. |
| Other | Restricted funds of $11K to hire a professional fundraiser. |
