| Return Reference | Explanation |
|---|---|
| Other | Pt.IX - Expenses shared with a 501(c)(4) organization - The organization shares personnel and overhead costs with NARAL Pro-Choice Missouri (NARAL). The organization reimburses NARAL for its share of the costs based on time spent on its projects compared to total time spent by staff or other reasonable method. Since the employees' salaries/wages are reported under NARAL's Federal ID number, this organization does not file payroll tax returns or W-2's using its Federal ID number even though its share of personnel costs are included on this 990. |
| Other | Pt. VII - In column D next to the executive director's name, there's no salary noted since it was paid by and reported on her W-2 with NARAL's Federal ID number (see comment above). However the salary and fringe benefits reimbursed to NARAL based on work done for this organization for the fiscal year was $34,531 and is reported in Pt. IX, line 5. |
| Pt VI, Line 7a | The organization is the subsidiary of the parent organization (per Schedule R definition)of NARAL Pro-Choice Missouri(NARAL). NARAL is the only member of the organization and appoints the board members of the organization. |
| Pt VI, Line 11b | The 990 draft was emailed to board members with a request that each member respond during a comment period with either an approval or with addtions/corrections. Changes, if any, were then summarized and forwarded to the tax preparer for inclusion in the final return. |
| Pt VI, Line 12c | Each board member and the executive director sign the conflict of interest form annually. If an potential conflict should arise during the year, the individuals are required to report and discuss the issue. |
| Pt VI, Line 15a | Board members reviewed compensation of executive directors of not-for-profits in the metropolitan area with similar annual revenues and personnel to determine that compensation was reasonable and comparable. |
| Pt VI, Line 15b | The executive director determined through discussions with other E.D.'s and community members that the compensation for staff was reasonable and comparable. |
| Pt XII, Line 2c | Although the organization does not obtain compiled or audited statements, they contract with a CPA who reviews the transactions quarterly and is available for consultation as needed. Due to the small number of board members, all are involved in reviewing quarterly financial statements and 990 and monitoring the overall financial affairs of the organization. |
| Pt VI, Line 19 | Our governing documents and 990's are available to the public on request and the 990's are on Guidestar/Candid. |
| Pt VI, Line 7b | Since NARAL Pro-Choice Missouri is the parent organization and appoints the board members, technically board decisions could be subject to the parent's approval but, in reality, the board acts independently. |
| Pt VI, Line 6 | As noted above, NARAL Pro-Choice Missouri is the only member of the organization. |
| Other | Pt. III - Statement of Program Accomplishments - NARAL Pro-Choice Missouri Foundation has a thriving internship program. Drawing from diverse campuses, the organization had summer and fall interns who worked on grassroots organizing and communications. Working with staff, they managed a very impressive social network presence and educated Missourians about women's health and potential political threats. On a grassroots level, the organization knocked on 9,790 doors, had 3,381 conversations, made 23,554 phone calls, and gained 7,739 new activists. For over 30 years, the organization has trained patient escorts at two local clinics providing abortion care. The signature clinic escort program filled 104 shifts with volunteers acting as physical barriers to protesters at clinics that provide women's health care, including abortion care. Staff, interns, and volunteers held visibility events to heighten public awareness about a special legislative session affecting access to reproductive health care. The organization also provided educational briefing papers to the public about pending legislation. Over the past ten years, the organization has done comprehensive research about contraceptive access, rape survivors' access to emergency contraception in emergency rooms, access to Title X family planning services, the efficacy of crisis pregnancy centers, the landscape of sex education in Missouri, and a host of other topics related to reproductive rights. The organization is committed to being an anti-racist organization supporting and lifting up the voices of those most disproportionately impacted by the dangerous abortion ban that passed in Missouri in 2019. With some 20 organizational allies, all working for the health and safety of Missouri women and families, we sought to protect individual rights and the rights of families, worked with faith-community allies, and organized against threats posed by the legislature, policymakers, and in the community generally. |
