28 OUR MISSION AT THE WIXRIKA RESEARCH CENTER IS TO CONTINUE BUILDING A RICH ARCHIVE OF WIXRIKA HISTORY, CULTURE AND TERRITORY THAT HIGHLIGHTS THE BEAUTY AND IMPORTANCE OF WIXRIKA CULTURAL SURVIVAL, ALONGSIDE OUR CONTINUED SUPPORT OF SELECT INITIATIVES THAT STRENGTHEN WIXRIKA AUTONOMY. IN THIS LIGHT, AND GIVEN THE ENORMITY OF THREATS THAT CONTINUE TO AFFECT WIXRIKA LAND AND CULTURE, WE ARE HAPPY TO SHARE SOME OF THE MOST IMPORTANT DEVELOPMENTS OF OUR 2018 - 2019 FISCAL YEAR. IN MAY OF 2018, WE RECEIVED AN IMPORTANT DONATION FROM DIANA FRIED WHO HAD PRODUCED A 27 MINUTE DOCUMENTARY ON THE WIXRIKA CARPENTRY AND WEAVING WORKSHOPS THAT WERE FUNDED BY THE NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION ADESMO (ASSOCIATION FOR THE ECOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE SIERRA MADRE OCCIDENTAL), IN THE 1980'S AND SUPERVISED BY JUAN NEGRN. MS. FRIED DONATED THE MASTER TAPE OF HER DOCUMENTARY "NEW DAY ON THE MOUNTAIN" ALONG WITH ALL THE ASSOCIATED FOOTAGE, TAPE RECORDINGS, PHOTOGRAPHS AND TRANSCRIPTS. INCLUDED IN HER DONATION WERE ALL RIGHTS TO THE ABOVE MENTIONED FILM AND ASSOCIATED MATERIALS. WE NOW HAVE ALMOST 900 MINUTES OF FILM OF HISTORICAL VALUE WHICH INCLUDES IMPORTANT INTERVIEWS THAT CAN BE TURNED INTO STAND- ALONE SHORTS AND EVENTUALLY BE POSTED TO OUR WEBSITE. DURING 2017 AND 2018, A GREAT DEAL OF OUR WORK WAS CENTERED ON DESIGNING, BUILDING AND BEGINNING TO POPULATE A NEW ONLINE ARCHIVE CAPABLE OF HANDLING A LARGE NUMBER OF HISTORICAL DOCUMENTS THAT WERE GATHERED BETWEEN 1970 AND PRESENT. ON SEPTEMBER 8, 2018 WE HELD A FUNDRAISER TO CELEBRATE OUR NEW WEBSITE GOING LIVE AND MADE AVAILABLE FOR SALE YARN PAINTINGS AND A SELECT FEW FRAMED PHOTOGRAPHS. THE PROCEEDS FROM THIS FUND RAISER ENABLED US TO DIGITIZE ALL 900 HOURS OF THE DONATED FILM FOOTAGE WE HAD RECEIVED FROM DIANA FRIED AS WELL AS DIGITIZE IMPORTANT RECORDINGS MADE BY JUAN NEGRN IN THE SIERRAS OF CHANTS AND MUSIC. THE FILM DIGITALIZATION WAS DONE BY KIM AUBRY OF ZOETROPE AUBRY PRODUCTIONS AND THE MUSIC DIGITALIZATION WAS DONE BY JIM MCKEE OF EARWAX PRODUCTIONS. WE THANK JOSH MORTON AND CHRISTOPHER BEAVER FOR THEIR ADVICE, FOR CONNECTING US TO THE BEST PEOPLE IN THE FIELD OF FILM TO HANDLE THE DIGITALIZATION AND FOR GUIDING US THROUGH THE PROCESS. BY MID-DECEMBER 2018, THE INITIAL STEP OF DIGITALIZATION WAS COMPLETED. IN THE FALL OF 2018, WE COORDINATED WITH THE INTERNATIONAL FRIENDSHIP CLUB (IFC) IN PUERTO VALLARTA, WITH ADDITIONAL ASSISTANCE COMING FROM THE PUERTO VALLARTA ROTARY CLUB, TO GIVE FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE TO WIXRIKA COLLEGE STUDENTS. SCHOLARSHIPS OF 5,000 PESOS (APPROXIMATELY 260 USD) WERE GIVEN TO SIX STUDENTS TO HELP THEM COVER THE COST OF BOOKS, TRANSPORTATION AND HOUSING. THE WIXRIKA RESEARCH CENTER IS IN CHARGE OF SOLICITING THE APPLICATIONS FROM STUDENTS, REVIEWING THE APPLICATIONS AND DECIDING WHICH STUDENTS WILL BE ACCEPTED BASED ON THEIR NEEDS AND HOW THEIR EDUCATION WILL BENEFIT THEIR COMMUNITIES IN THE FUTURE. THE IFC, IS A MEXICAN NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION MADE UP OF UNITED STATES AND CANADIAN CITIZENS LIVING IN MEXICO. THIS FIRST YEAR THEIR DONATIONS COVERED 5 SCHOLARSHIPS AND WRC COVERED ONE. DUE TO THE OVERWHELMING SUCCESS OF THIS FIRST YEAR THE IFC HAS COMMITTED TO DOUBLING THEIR SUPPORT TO COVER TWICE AS MANY STUDENTS WITH A SCHOLARSHIP OF 6,000 PESOS FOR 2019. WE BELIEVE THE BEST WAY TO SUPPORT THE AUTONOMOUS DEVELOPMENT OF THE WIXRIKA PEOPLE IS TO SUPPORT THEIR STUDENTS WHO ARE SEEKING A HIGHER EDUCATION AND WILL RETURN HOME WITH VALUABLE SKILLS THAT WILL BENEFIT THEIR COMMUNITIES. IN JANUARY 2019, WE RECEIVED A FORMAL REQUEST TO MOUNT AN EXTENSIVE EXHIBIT AT THE MUSEO CABAAS IN GUADALAJARA AS PART OF THE INTERNATIONAL CELEBRATION OF THE YEAR OF INDIGENOUS LANGUAGES. IN 1997, CABAAS WAS DECLARED A WORLD HERITAGE SITE BY UNESCO AND IT STANDS AS ONE OF MEXICO'S MOST IMPORTANT MUSEUMS. GRANDES MAESTROS DEL ARTE WIXRIKA: ACERVO NEGRN, CURATED BY DIANA NEGRN, WILL BRING TOGETHER YARN PAINTING FROM FIVE COLLECTIONS HIGHLIGHTING THE WORKS OF SIX ARTISTS. ALL OF THE YARN PAINTINGS WERE ORIGINALLY COMMISSIONED BY JUAN NEGRN BETWEEN 1972 AND 1992. THE EXHIBIT WILL ALSO FEATURE TEXTILES (FINE EMBROIDERY AND WEAVINGS), SCULPTURES, PHOTOGRAPHS, FILM, A LOOPING SLIDE SHOW WITH SOUND TRACK, AND AUDIO CLIPS OF THE ARTISTS EXPLAINING THE MEANING OF THEIR PAINTINGS. A TRI-LINGUAL CATALOGUE (SPANISH, ENGLISH AND WIXRIKA) IS BEING JOINTLY FINANCED AND PRODUCED BY THE SECRETARY OF CULTURE FOR THE STATE OF JALISCO AND THE WIXRIKA RESEARCH CENTER AND IS BEING DESIGNED AND PRINTED IN MEXICO. THE EXHIBIT IS BEING FULLY FINANCED BY THE MUSEO CABAAS AND IS SCHEDULED TO OPEN ON JUNE 20, 2019. A SERIES OF WORKSHOPS AND CONFERENCES ARE BEING PLANNED TO TAKE PLACE OVER THE DURATION OF THE EXHIBIT AS WELL AS A SERIES OF FILMS. WE BELIEVE THIS EXHIBIT WILL BE AN EXCELLENT WAY TO PROMOTE THE BEAUTY AND IMPORTANCE OF WIXRIKA CULTURE TO THE MEXICAN PEOPLE WHO SO OFTEN VIEW THE INDIGENOUS CULTURES AS INFERIOR TO THEIR OWN. THE TRI-LINGUAL CATALOGUE WILL BE THE FIRST TO EVER INCLUDE TEXTS IN THE WIXRIKA LANGUAGE AND FEATURES TWO ARTICLES WRITTEN BY YOUNG WIXRIKA STUDENTS. WE BELIEVE THIS WILL BE A PERFECT WAY TO CELEBRATE THE YEAR OF INDIGENOUS LANGUAGES AND TO RAISE AWARENESS OF THE BEAUTY AND VALUE OF WIXRIKA CULTURE IN THEIR HOMELAND.
