| PART III, LINE 4A - PROGRAM SERVICE ACCOMPLISHMENTS | FISCAL YEAR END 2019 COMMUNITY CANCER RESEARCH FOUNDATION, INC. (CCRF) ACTIVITIES (JULY 1, 2018 THROUGH JUNE 30, 2019) - THE CANCER RESEARCH FOUNDATION RELIES ON PUBLIC CONTRIBUTIONS TO HELP OFFSET THE COSTS OF CONDUCTING CLINICAL TRIALS AND OFFERING SUPPORT SERVICES. THROUGH FINANCIAL AND RESOURCE DONATIONS OF MANY INDIVIDUALS AND ORGANIZATIONS, THESE SERVICES HAVE BEEN POSSIBLE. IN ADDITION, THE COMMUNITY HEALTHCARE SYSTEM HOSPITALS PROVIDE FINANCIAL, IN-KIND AND PERSONNEL SUPPORT FOR MANY OF THE ACTIVITIES OF THE FOUNDATION. COMMUNITY SUPPORT: If not for our community support, it would be difficult to continue to fulfill our mission. We are thankful for the many community groups and businesses who continue to support our organization and account for a large part of our income. We have had numerous individuals and organizations hold fundraisers for our benefit and we truly appreciate their selfless efforts. In addition, the Community Foundation of Northwest Indiana, Inc. and a number of its entities contribute not only monetarily, but also through the time and talents of many employees. FOUNDATION ACTIVITIES The foundation continuously seeks opportunities to educate the public and professionals about the latest in cancer care and supports clinical trials in the community so individuals diagnosed with cancer do not always have to travel to distant hospitals to receive this type of treatment. Annual Spring Symposium-Cancer update 2019 held on March 02, 2019 for healthcare professionals: This year's symposium included topics about genetic testing to assist the medical professional when to make decisions to have testing complete. Triple Negative Breast Cancer treatment update. Surgical management of Pancreatic Cancer using the technology of both invasive and minimally invasive techniques. Benefits of complementary treatment for cancer patients. Approximately 125 healthcare professionals attended. This program was made possible partially through a grant from the John Anderson Grant and Laini Fluellen Charities. The Administrator participated in Cancer Committee for both munster medical research foundation, inc. and St. Mary Medical Center. The administrator also participates on the Breast Leadership Committee both at munster medical research foundation and St. Mary medical center, Chemotherapy Committee, and the Research Committee at munster medical research foundation, Inc. and recently invited to join the Oncology Steering Committee at St. Mary medical center. The Cancer Committee plans activities of the cancer program and helps maintain and improve practice standards to meet the criteria outlined by the American College of Surgeons. These committees establish continuity of care throughout the healthcare for the cancer patient and for public education and awareness. The initiative for the Community Cancer Committee was lung cancer for 2019. Staff RN's participated in health fairs to educate and screen for eligibility for Low Dose Lung CT scan for early detection of lung cancer. Forms were created and based on eligibility criteria the patients were educated to discuss with their primary care physicians to schedule a LDCT of the lung. The staff RN's also participated in the health fairs as ongoing education to the public for colorectal screening and prevention and taught on collecting stools for occult blood, a screening test for colorectal cancer. These kits were given out at health fairs and individuals were called with results and educated about the significance. Cancer Research Department Activities The Cancer Research Department staff participated in the following programs during this past fiscal year: - NRG Oncology Nursing committee (voluntary activities of education of new members). - Meeting initial visits of the Cancer Resource Centre to provide support and education of newly diagnosed cancer patients. - Assisted with the annual Cancer Resource Centre Unite & Fight event. - Participation in the Indiana Cancer Consortium Coalition for Region 1 including a Community chat that was started on Facebook live and held every couple of months at various locations. - A new Administrator and Director of Cancer Research hired in December 2018; Amber A. Kindt took over for Mary Shields. - Dr. Mohamad Kassar and Dr. Mary Nicholson will be published as authors for the respective studies IMPACt and EA1141. - Lung cancer screening (promoting Low Dose CT scans) one patient had subsequent testing done based on smoking/medical history. It was noted that most of the participants (public) who attended the health fairs were non-smokers. One health fair was in collaboration with the Lung Cancer Navigator. - Colorectal cancer screening. One participant was positive for blood in the stool, participant was notified and encourage to follow-up with primary care physician. The Cancer Research Department offers a number of clinical trials locally through the National Cancer Institute Cooperative Groups. The Cancer Research Department participates in NRG Oncology as a member of its main group as well as in other National Cancer Institute research cooperative groups, and establishing a Membership with the NSABP Foundation. This past year research focused on triple negative breast cancer and a novel technology that predicts the effectiveness of various chemotherapies and chemotherapy combinations in treating late stage cancer. FUNDRAISING EVENTS Annual Perennial Ball held in April 2019: Major fundraiser for the Foundation held in the spring. This year's event was held again at the Hilton in Chicago, Illinois with over 500 in attendance and raised over $220,000 for our organization. Tree Lighting Ceremony: This year's event raised over $11,600 for cancer research. Our honored guest to light the holiday trees was Leslie Darrow, an individual who has received chemotherapy for HER2 + breast cancer. She's receiving a drug that was FDA approved based on the results of a clinical trial the Research Department participated from 2001-2005. Cancer Resource Centre Unite and Fight: The Cancer Resource Centre's main fundraising event Unite & Fight was well attended with again over 1000 individuals present. This year's event raised in excess of $100,000. Friends of the Cancer Resource Centre: This auxiliary group continues to support the Centre with various fundraisers. Rachel Lewis leads the group in coordinating activities and events. Share the Love luncheon is the biggest fundraiser held at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts. Jerry Ross, NASA astronaut, was the guest speaker. There were 340 in attendance and raised over $19,000. Cancer Health Navigation and Survivorship: - Continued breast survivorship and navigation visits for all breast cancer patients. NAPBC survey was completed this year with accreditation. - Navigation of gastrointestinal, genitourinary (GI/GU) cancers by RN health navigator. GI/GU navigator attended health fair and promoted colorectal screening. Free occult blood kits distributed. - General and Lung; also attended health fair to educate and screen for lung cancer and Low Dose CT screening. - We have seen a significant increase in the number of survivorship care plans delivered. - All navigators are available to all new patients at the Cancer Resource Centre to introduce program and offer education for clinical matters. - Dr. Mohamad Kassar and Dr. Brenda Eriksen suggested a change in the Navigation where the patients will be contacted with 48 hours of diagnosis. This is a system wide change and is in the process of making changes. During the past fiscal year the Cancer Resource Centre saw 385 new visitors. In total, the free services of the Cancer Resource Centre have been utilized by 4,430 individuals making a total of 51,827 visits since it opens its doors in 2003. Many of the programs offered this past fiscal year were filmed on Facebook Live, giving greater access to the educational material. This was well received and some offerings had as many as 2,000 views. The Cancer Resource Centre, which was opened June 1, 2003, continues to grow and expand services. New programs implemented this fiscal year included the following: Support Groups: None- *Mind Over Mood was discontinued 4/2019 due to lack of participation Mind/Body/Spirit: Essential Oils (10/2019) Healthy Cooking: Mrs. Dornberg (10/2018) Cancer Survivorship Series (11/2018) Educational Programs/Lectures: Meeting the Experts: Dr. Neel Shah (7/2018) Meet the Expert: Dr. Bose: Advances in Breast Reconstruction (7/2018) Shanti Wellness Lecture (8/2018) Walking Club (10/2018-spring thru winter) Healthy Cooking: Mrs. Dornberg (10/2018) Cancer Survivorship-Takeda Oncology (11/2018) |
