Explanation
PART III - 2019 ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Through our professional development workshops, we were able to provide personal finance and economics curriculum training to 393 educators who in turn, reached approximately 31,440 students throughout the state of New Jersey. The number of teachers reached this year represents a 53% increase over prior year figures. Our offerings this year included programs covering Middle School Financial Literacy Standards, Advanced Placement Macroeconomics, Economic Freedom of the World, Understanding Fiscal Responsibility and College and Career Readiness. In December of 2019, NJCEE partnered with the New Jersey Coalition for Financial Education (NJCFE) to host its annual financial literacy symposium on the campus of New Jersey City University, a long time university partner of NJCEE. The symposium included two nationally recognized financial literacy authors, Beth Kobliner and Jonathan Clements, as keynote speakers. Also, for the first time, two workshop tracks were offered, one for K-12 teachers and a second one for community financial literacy educators. Topics covered include train the trainers, technology in financial literacy and financial literacy leadership recognition. During the spring of 2019, NJCEE, along with the New Jersey City University Institute for Financial Literacy and Economic Education (IFLEE), hosted an invitation only luncheon for the surrounding community with Hester Peirce, SEC Commissioner. The event was well attended with Ms. Peirce fielding thought-provoking questions from the audience for 1 1/2 hours. Both teachers and students continue using our first-rate, free online resources. For 2019, there have been 310 unique visitors using our EconEdlink website that gives access to hundreds of free, online lessons and classroom interactives as well as free, online professional development videos that allow teachers to gain mastery over challenging content and learn to use our active-learning methodologies in their classrooms. Gen i Revolution, our free, online personal finance game for high school students, has grown 7% over last year, with 11,565 students now participating. This year NJCEE was able to offer the National Personal Finance Challenge to New Jersey educators for the first time. The National Personal Finance Challenge is a competition that provides high school students with an exciting and motivating opportunity to build, apply, and demonstrate their knowledge of money management. Teams showcase their expertise in earning income, buying goods and services, saving, using credit, investing, as well as protecting and insuring. The response to the competition far exceeded our expectations with 537 students competing in the inaugural contest. Educators and students continue to show increased interest in our state level student competition, the National Economics Challenge. The National Economics Challenge is the nation's most prestigious high school economics competition. The Challenge recognizes exceptional high school students for their knowledge of economic principles and their ability to apply problem-solving and critical-thinking skills to real-world events. In 2019, 606 New Jersey students participated in the challenge, a 57% increase over 2018 levels.
