Explanation:
As an unpaid volunteer, I have filed a 990 or 990 EZ every year for this organization since 2001, when its income rose to the level that filing became necessary. I have usually filed at the end of the automatic extension period, which always falls on February 15. For this, the 2018-19 tax year, that time came at February 15, 2020. In early February I found out I would need further tests and procedures for aggressive prostate cancer, leading me suddenly on an unanticipated path of intense investigation, learning and discovery, and which culminated in my having a radical prostatectomy on August 17, 2020. At the same time COVID came along, which upended everything about my normal routine and my medical investigations, and which in fact delayed my cancer surgery for six weeks. The COVID and cancer distractions were sufficient to cause me to forget my duties as to the 990. Upon receiving the IRS notice of failure to file, I was so mortified that I proceeded to complete, and am submitting at this time, not only this return for 2018-19 but also the return for 2019-2020, which is not due until November 15, 2020. It is not my practice to operate in violation of the IRS regulations and I am deeply embarrassed by having done so this year. I hope you will be able to be lenient under the circumstances.
