MCCONNELL SCIENCE MUSEUM IS A NOT-FOR-PROFIT ORGANIZATION LOCATED IN GRAND JUNCTION, COLORADO AND WAS INCORPORATED ON SEPTEMBER 28, 2004, AS A COLORADO CORPORATION. THE EUREKA! MCCONNELL SCIENCE MUSEUM IS A 501(C)3 NON-PROFIT, ORGANIZATION THAT WAS FOUNDED IN 1999 BY RETIRED PHYSICIST, JOHN MCCONNELL, TO ADDRESS DEFICIENCIES IN SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND MATH (STEM) EDUCATION THROUGH INQUIRY-BASED, HANDS-ON ACTIVITIES FOR STUDENTS. EUREKA! BEGAN IN 1992, WHEN JOHN HELPED TEACH SCIENCE TO ONE ELEMENTARY CLASS IN GRAND JUNCTION, COLORADO. THIS QUICKLY BECAME A TRAVELING SHOW, WITH SCIENCE DEMONSTRATIONS TRAVELING FROM SCHOOL TO SCHOOL IN THE TRUNK OF JOHN'S CAR. AFTER REACHING APPROXIMATELY 5,000 STUDENTS PER YEAR FROM THE CAR, THE MESA VALLEY SCHOOL DISTRICT 51(D51) SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION PROVIDED A PERMANENT SPACE IN A D51 ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN JANUARY 2000 THAT WOULD HOUSE THE THEN JOHN MCCONNELL MATH AND SCIENCE CENTER. THERE WERE OVER 150 EXHIBITS FOR VISITORS AGES 3 AND UP TO EXPERIENCE HANDS-ON INVESTIGATION AND LEARNING OF SCIENCE, MATH, AND ENGINEERING CONCEPTS. THEY ALSO PROVIDE TRAINING AND RESOURCES FOR TEACHERS, SUMMER AND NO SCHOOL DAY CAMPS, AND OTHER LEARNING EXPERIENCES FOR STUDENTS OF ALL AGES. SEVENTEEN YEARS AFTER OPENING ITS DOORS IN A LOCAL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, THE JOHN MCCONNELL MATH AND SCIENCE CENTER (NOW THE EUREKA! MCCONNELL SCIENCE MUSEUM) OUTGREW THAT FACILITY AND EXPANDED TO MEET THE GROWING NEEDS OF WESTERN COLORADO. THE EUREKA! MCCONNELL SCIENCE MUSEUM RECENTLY CONSTRUCTED AND OPENED, A NEW $5 MILLION, EXPANDED FACILITY ON THE COLORADO MESA UNIVERSITY (CMU) CAMPUS. THE NEW EUREKA! MCCONNELL SCIENCE MUSEUM WILL PROVIDE EXPOSURE TO STEAM (SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, ART, AND MATHEMATICS) AND AID WESTERN COLORADO STUDENTS IN DEVELOPING CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS, INCREASE SCIENCE LITERACY, AND ENABLE THE NEXT GENERATION OF INNOVATORS. TODAY, THE EUREKA! MCCONNELL SCIENCE MUSEUM IS A VIBRANT COMMUNITY RESOURCE WORKING TO PROVIDE ENRICHED MATH AND SCIENCE EXPERIENCES FOR YOUTH LIVING ON COLORADO'S WESTERN SLOPE. THE EUREKA! MCCONNELL SCIENCE MUSEUM CURRENTLY SERVES OVER 17,000 STUDENTS AND GUESTS EACH YEAR. THERE ARE OVER 100 HANDS-ON EXHIBITS ON DISPLAY IN THE EXHIBIT HALL. OVER 115 SUMMER (SERVING 1,400 LEARNERS) AND 50 YEAR ROUND SCIENCE CAMPS WHEN SCHOOLS ARE NOT IN SESSION (NO SCHOOL DAY) ARE PROVIDED FOR PREKINDERGARTEN THROUGH TWELFTH GRADE. OUR PRE-SCHOOL PROGRAM HAS SIGNIFICANTLY EXPANDED IN THE PAST YEAR PROVIDING WEEKLY PROGRAMS FOR LEARNERS AS YOUNG AS THREE. CURRENT PROGRAMS THE EUREKA! MCCONNELL SCIENCE MUSEUM CURRENTLY SERVES OVER 17,000 STUDENT LEARNERS ANNUALLY THROUGH PROGRAMMED ACTIVITIES AND GENERAL ADMISSIONS. EUREKA! EACH KIT CONTAINS 1 - 6 COMPLETE AND STEP-BY-STEP LESSON PLANS PER SCIENCE UNIT AND THE MATERIALS NECESSARY TO CONDUCT THE ASSOCIATED "HANDS-ON", INQUIRY-BASED ACTIVITIES AND EXPERIMENTS. RECENTLY LAUNCHED IS A NEW PRE-SCHOOL HANDS-ON SCIENCE HOUR WHERE WE ENGAGE PARENTS ALONGSIDE THEIR CHILDREN. MCCONNELL SCIENCE MUSEUM ANNUALLY EMPLOYS 52 UNIVERSITY STUDENTS (INTERNS) WHO ARE TRAINED TO DELIVER HANDS-ON EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING IN NO SCHOOL DAY AND SUMMER CAMPS, AFTER-SCHOOL ACTIVITIES, AND THROUGH OUTREACH PROGRAMS. NEW IN 2018, WE PROVIDE PROGRAMMING SUPPORT AND STAFF IN FIVE TITLE 1 SCHOOLS TO PROVIDE STEM ENRICHMENT AFTER SCHOOL.
