| Part I, Question 1, Part III Question 1 | OVERVIEW The American Museum of Natural History ("AMNHthe "Museum") is one of the largest and most complex natural history museums in the world. It is a diverse scientific, educational and cultural organization that includes a research enterprise of approximately 200 full time scientists; the Richard Gilder Graduate School, which confers the Ph.D. in Comparative Biology and the Master of Arts in Teaching in Earth science; collections of more than 34 million specimens and artifacts that constitute an invaluable record of life on Earth; and one of the largest natural history libraries in the world, 45 permanent exhibition halls, special exhibition galleries which display award-winning exhibitions, as well as the Rose Center for Earth and Space, which houses the Hayden Planetarium where planetarium shows are shown. The Museum also has a major digital enterprise and online presence, and distributes its scientific and educational content, special exhibitions and planetarium shows to venues in approximately 25 countries. The Museum was founded as a nonprofit corporation in 1869 by a special act of the Legislature of the State of New York and is chartered as an educational institution with its scientific research, educational programs and exhibitions under the auspices of the Board of Regents of the State of New York. The AMNH mission, which reflects a close integration of science and education, is "to discover, interpret and disseminate -- through scientific research and education -- knowledge about human cultures, the natural world, and the universe." The Museum is located on approximately 18 acres in Theodore Roosevelt Park across from Central Park in the borough of Manhattan in New York City, the largest city in the United States with a growing and diverse population of 8.6 million and the highest tourism of any city in the United States, with approximately 65.2 million foreign and domestic tourists a year. The premises of the Museum open to the public include 45 permanent exhibition halls and its special exhibition galleries, the Rose Center for Earth and Space including the Hayden Planetarium, theaters for symposia and public programs, and the library. Other parts of the premises house research laboratories, collections, classrooms, and the Richard Gilder Graduate School. Construction of the new Richard Gilder Center for Science, Education (the "Gilder Center"), and Innovation is underway. The project includes a five-story, approximately 190,000-gross-square-foot addition, approximately 40,000 gross square feet of renovations to existing space, and alterations to an approximately 75,000-square-foot adjacent area of Theodore Roosevelt Park. The Gilder Center will include new exhibition and learning spaces with state-of-the-art technology and the Museum's world-class collections, expanding access to a broader range of the Museum's resources for students, teachers, and families, offering new learning opportunities, and inviting all visitors to share in the excitement of discovery. The Museum is open to the public 363 days a year, and admission to the permanent halls and the Rose Center for Earth and Space is on a "suggested" basis. Last year the museum's overall attendance was approximately 5 million. AMNH is publicly supported by operating and capital funds from the City of New York and by grants from the City, State, and Federal governments. Additional support comes from individual donations, grants from foundations and corporations, as well as admissions revenue, endowment yield, and ancillary activities. RESEARCH AMNH scientific research is carried out with a full-time scientific staff of approximately 200 who work in biological sciences, paleontology, astrophysics, earth and planetary sciences, and anthropology. AMNH scientists conduct more than 100 expeditions each year around the world and publish their research in peer-reviewed journals at the rate of about 450 publications in FY 2019. The science effort is led currently by 40 tenured or tenure track curators whose research publications have attracted over 200,000 citations. Senior curators have an average citation index (H-index) of 45, regarded as an indication of "outstanding" impact characteristic of only top research institutions. Research facilities utilized by AMNH include the Museum's collections, a natural history library and state-of-the-art laboratories as well as other research facilities off site which are available through university consortiums in which AMNH participates. AMNH also owns over 100 acres in the Chiricahua Mountains in Southeastern Arizona with research laboratories and temporary housing for researchers, as well as the 17-acre Great Gull Island, a conservation area located at the eastern end of Long Island Sound in New York State. The work of scientists at the Museum is partially funded by federal agencies including the National Science Foundation, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the National Institutes of Health. AMNH's cross-disciplinary research centers include an institute for comparative genomics ("the institute"), which advances basic research in molecular biology. The institute includes a number of science facilities including three genomics laboratories; the Monell Collection for Molecular and Microbial Research (a frozen tissue repository of DNA and tissue specimens); and a parallel computing facility. It also supports the Museum's comparative genomics research program and education laboratory. The genomics research programs are complemented by the effort of Museum scientist in phenomics research- the investigation of cell and tissue structure, anatomy, physiology and other complex features of organism and species that are influenced by genes. Thus, the Museum's research mission in comparative biology embraces both genomics and phenomics. Research programs in comparative biology are complemented by educational programs and facilities, including the Education Laboratory, that help convey the critical scientific concepts to diverse audiences. Another research program is the Center for Biodiversity and Conservation (CBC), which surveys and studies biological diversity, provides educational and training programs and strives to mitigate threats to the Earth's ecosystems. CBC's projects in the Bahamas, the Solomon Islands, British Columbia, Bolivia, Argentina, and Vietnam, integrate multidisciplinary research and the Museum's collections and technology for training and collaborative problem solving. CBC is also working to develop tools to support the professionalization of the global protected area workforce and to incorporate indigenous and local knowledge into biodiversity assessments. In the Fall of 2018, the Museum entered into a collaboration with the Simons Foundation's Flatiron Institute Center for Computational Astrophysics (CCA). Two of the Museum's astrophysics curators are now jointly supported by this program. The CCA fosters the work of a large team of computational astrophysicists and provides the high performance computing facility for the big data analyses required in this field. COLLECTIONS and LIBRARY The Museum's collections number over 34 million specimens and artifacts and are among the largest and most comprehensive in the world. The collections constitute an invaluable record of life on Earth and are maintained to facilitate the study and understanding of 4.5 billion years of change in Earth's geology, climate, and the 3.5-billion-year history of its habitats and life forms. The collections typically increase by between twenty-five and seventy-five thousand specimens and artifacts each year. New collections and facilities include the Museum's frozen tissue collection of DNA with more than one hundred twenty thousand tissue samples that form a repository for research at AMNH and other institutions, often including specimens deposited by researchers under permit from the National Park Service. Other new forms of collections include large scientific digital databases of genomic and astrophysical data. The collections and research assets are enriched by continued exploration of such diverse areas as Mongolia, Kenya, British Columbia, Argentina, South Africa, Guatemala, Congo, Costa Rica, China, Belize, Bahamas, Arctic islands, Antarctica, Vanuatu, Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, India, Chile, Brazil, French Guiana, Columbia, Peru, Australia, Indonesia, New Guinea, Romania, and many others. AMNH provides research material for other institutions, typically lending tens of thousands of specimens each year and with outstanding loans of hundreds of thousands of specimens at any given time. Its collections are also made available for study on site to research scientists and students annually, to more than 1,200 researchers in FY 2019. |
| Part I, Question 1, Part III Question 1(Continued) | The Library of the American Museum of Natural History was established in 1869 with the founding of the Museum. Since that time, the Library has grown into one of the largest natural history libraries in the world, with a collection that is rich in retrospective materials, some going back to the 15th century. The Library's holdings comprise a research collection with topics that span the full range of the natural sciences, special collections (which consist of archival material relating to the history of the Museum, its scientists and staff, scientific expeditions and research, Museum exhibitions and educational offerings), and digital collections. It also includes an astronomy collection, which consists of over 8,000 volumes, 55 journal titles, over 10,000 photographs, and archives dating back to 1934, one year before the opening of the original Hayden Planetarium. The Library's primary function is to serve and support the work of the Museum's scientific staff; however, it also serves local students, faculty, researchers, and the general public, as well as scholars nationally and internationally. EDUCATION THE RICHARD GILDER GRADUATE SCHOOL ("RGGSthe "GRADUATE SCHOOL") is accredited by the New York State Board of Regents and confers the degrees of Doctor of PHILOSOPHY ("PH.D.") IN COMPARATIVE BIOLOGY AND MASTER OF ARTS in Teaching (MAT) earth and planetary science, the first and only museum in the United States authorized to do so. The Graduate School's students publish papers in leading academic journals during or based on work from their studies at the Graduate School. RGGS students continue to be highly successful in securing distinguished grants, awards, and post-graduate positions. In Fiscal Year 2019, RGGS conferred six (6) Ph.D.'s in Comparative Biology and sixteen (16) new science teachers began working in high-needs New York Schools. Ten years after the first cohort of students entered the Comparative Biology program, the school has graduated 29 Ph.D.'s, most of whom work in science, academic, educational, and museum fields, including at the National Science Foundation, the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, Royal Ontario Museum, and the University of Edinburgh. Nine years ago, the New York State Board of Regents selected AMNH to pilot a Master of Arts in Teaching program for K-12 science teachers with conferral of the degree by the Board of Regents, the first freestanding master's degree program offered by a U.S. museum to prepare science teachers. The Regents' pilot program was completed in August 2016, and the Regents approved an amendment of the AMNH charter authorizing AMNH itself to confer the degree of Master of Arts in Teaching. As noted above, the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program now resides in the Graduate School along with the Ph.D. program. Now in its eighth year, the innovative program has received full accreditation and enjoys a nearly 100 percent job placement rate. As of the close of FY19, 81 graduates were teaching more than 9,700 students, mainly in high-needs schools in New York. Teacher retention exceeds national averages, particularly for those teaching in high-needs schools To further advance training of the next generation of scientists, the RGGS also conducts a doctoral training program in collaboration with four universities: Cornell, Columbia, New York University, and the City University of New York, and maintains an active post-doctoral program. It also offers an undergraduate training program, which provides a select group of undergraduate students with intensive research experience in such subjects as evolutionary biology, earth and planetary sciences, and astrophysics. For K-12 teachers, the Museum has extensive professional development programs that trained more than 4,300 educators in Fiscal Year 2019 through a varied suite of onsite and online offerings that are aligned with current curricular standards and designed to familiarize educators with rigorous scientific content, effective teaching practices, and the Museum's own rich resources. Many of the programs offered to teachers are graduate credit bearing, furthering pursuit of advanced degrees in science education through the City University of New York and other universities. In addition, in FY19, nearly 360,000 students and teachers visited the Museum as part of organized school or camp groups, and many participate in the Museum's after-school programs. Among the Museum's signature education programs for middle school students is the Urban Advantage initiative, which is now in its 16th year. Urban Advantage is a middle school science enrichment program developed by the Museum with the NYC Department of Education and operated by the Museum and seven other science institutions of New York City. In FY19, Urban Advantage served a record of 94,298 middle school students and 889 teachers - including 696 continuing teachers - in 293 middle schools in all five boroughs across New York City. In 2019, Urban Advantage is in the third year of piloting an expansion into the third, fourth, and fifth grades, which served 2,380 students and 34 teachers from 20 elementary schools in the 2018-2019 academic year. Each year, the Museum's Science and Research Mentoring Program (SRMP) provides 60 under-resourced high school students with a year of focused training in science practices and laboratory skills, as well as the invaluable opportunity to pursue research projects under the mentorship of a Museum scientist. Throughout FY19, SRMP students spent approximately 140 hours doing research, with activities including literature reviews, data collection, data analysis, and scientific writing. Research topics ranged from Genomics and Systematics, to Cultural Anthropology to Astrophysics and Planetary Science. All 60 students successfully graduated from the program, continuing the program's remarkable retention rate of virtually 100 percent. Since 2013, the Museum has also led the New York City Science Research Mentoring Consortium, a partnership of local academic, research, and cultural institutions committed to providing mentored research experiences modeled on SRMP's proven success, while sharing resources, consolidating common activities, and identifying best practices. The Consortium now includes 22 partner sites--including the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory at Columbia University, the NOAA Center for Remote Sensing and Earth Systems (CREST) at City College, and Wave Hill--and reached more than 500 students during the 2018-2019 academic year. With support from the Helen Gurley Brown Trust in FY19, the Museum continued its Bridge Up: STEM program, a youth learning program for high school aged girls in computational science. Focused on supporting young women and youth from low-resources and low-income communities the program serves 50 high school girls annually in a two-year, intensive program that teaches programming skills aligned to scientific research. The program continues to engage and energize its participants and imbue them with confidence in their new skills and knowledge, and program retention has been almost 100 percent. The Museum also produces and distributes curricula, lesson plans, and resource materials for classroom use, as well as for use in libraries and community organizations, to support science teaching and learning in New York City. These materials are widely available online to communities throughout the State of New York, the U.S., and the world, through the Museum's continued investment in digital media. The Museum further extends the reach of its educational programs through after-hours public programs, including the monthly SciCaf series, which features popular presentations by Museum curators, and the annual Isaac Asimov Debate. The Museum also convenes international conferences and convenings on scientific, environmental, cultural, and educational topics, including the annual Margaret Mead Film Festival, the longest running showcase for international documentary films in anthropology. EXHIBITIONS The Museum creates and mounts its award-winning exhibitions, science video bulletin displays, and planetarium shows for display at AMNH and distribution to museums, science centers, and planetaria in numerous venues in approximately 25 countries. |
| Part I, Question 1, Part III Question 1(Continued) | T. rex: The Ultimate Predator opened on March 11, 2019, and is an exhibition that explores the iconic Tyrannosaurus rex and other members of this large, ancient and fearsome family. Many early tyrannosaurs in the Jurassic were little bigger than a wolf. Only in the late Cretaceous did tyrannosaurs such as T. rex become the largest, most fearsome predators on Earth. This exhibition allows visitors to examine the adaptations that helped these super-predators achieve global dominance. T. rex: The Ultimate Predator introduces visitors to the entire tyrannosaur superfamily and reveals the amazing story of the most iconic dinosaur in the world through stunning life-sized models, fossils and casts, and engaging interactives. T. rex: The Ultimate Predator replaced the exhibition Our Senses: An Immersive Experience once it completed its run on January 2, 2019. Our Senses was an exhibition that explored how we use our sense organs to gather up vital information-and more importantly, how our brains interpret sensory data and enable us to perceive the world around us. Unseen Oceans continued its run in our Gallery 4 space, providing an exhibition that explored the vast, dynamic and still-mysterious world ocean from a variety of perspectives. Inside You, a panel version of the popular traveling exhibition, introduced visitors to the idea that our bodies are home to approximately 100 trillion bacteria living inside us and on us-along with even more viruses and other microorganisms. This special exhibit opened in June of 2017 and closed in June 2019. The Butterfly Conservatory: Butterflies Alive in Winter (Fall 2018 through Spring 2019) is an annual exhibition that features up to 500 live, free-flying tropical butterflies from the Americas, Africa and Asia. The butterflies are housed in a vivarium that approximates their natural habitat, includes live flowering plants that serve as nectar sources and features controlled artificial light, temperature and humidity. Featured species include iridescent blue morpho butterflies, striking scarlet swallowtails and large owl butterflies. Text panels located immediately outside the vivarium offer information about the evolution and life cycle of butterflies, including explanations of mimicry, diversity and butterflies' important role in conservation. It highlights the country's vibrant culture as well as its extraordinary biodiversity across its remote forests, mysterious caves, expansive wetlands and dazzling reefs. -Life at the Limits reveals a glimpse of the breathtaking diversity of the natural world and the power of natural selection to shape exceptional responses to the challenges, and opportunities, of life on Earth. -Pterosaurs: Flight in the Age of Dinosaurs explores the ancient winged reptiles known as pterosaurs and what incredible new discoveries are revealing about this extraordinary group of animals. -The Power of Poison explores poison's roles in nature, myth, and human health-as a defense against predators, a source of strength, or a lethal weapon-turned-lifesaving treatment. -Our Global Kitchen: Food, Nature, Culture focuses on the complex and intricate food system that brings what we eat from farm to fork and illuminates the myriad ways in which food is produced and consumed throughout the world. -Beyond Planet Earth: The Future of Space Exploration transports visitors to the moon, asteroids, Mars, and beyond through fully immersive environments, models, and engaging interactives. It allows visitors to find out what experts think the future will hold for us beyond planet Earth. -Creatures of Light: Nature's Bioluminescence takes visitors to such fascinating places as the far depths of the ocean, explains why and how certain animals create "living light", and helps us all better understand vast and glorious ecosystem of which we are a part. -World's Largest Dinosaurs reveals how a uniquely super-sized group of dinosaurs - the long-necked and long-tailed sauropods - lived, breathed, ate, moved, and survived by illuminating how size and scale related to basic biological functions. -Brain: The Inside Story provides visitors with the latest information in neuroscience, highlighting the brain's surprising ability to rewire itself in response to experience, disability, or trauma. It also showcases new technologies that researchers use to study the brain and treat conditions such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. -Race to the End of the Earth focuses on the unique challenges that confronted two competing explorers, Norwegian Roald Amundsen and Captain Robert Falcon Scot of the British Royal Navy, as they undertook their 1,800-mile journeys from the edge of the Ross Ice Shelf to the South Pole and back in 1911-1912. The exhibition also examines the legacy of the heroic age of Antarctic exploration by linking these expeditions with past and present research on this unique continent. -Traveling the Silk Road: Ancient Pathway to the Modern World brings to life the most celebrated trade route in human history through evocative sights, sounds, and artifacts. Visitors embark on an unparalleled journey exploring commerce, communication, and cultural exchange in cities and empires of central and west Asia from 600 to 1200. -Mythic Creatures: Dragons, Unicorns & Mermaids traces the cultural and natural history roots of the world's most captivating mythological creatures. -Countdown to Zero: Defeating Disease focused on the efforts to achieve eradication of Guinea worm disease and other global afflictions. Created in collaboration with The Carter Center, Countdown to Zero used photographs, artifacts and video to tell the story of the steep reduction of Guinea worm disease over the past 30 years. This parasitic infection is caused by a roundworm found in stagnant drinking water. The exhibition also explored the ongoing efforts to eliminate illnesses including river blindness, lymphatic filariasis, polio and malaria. -Darwin presents an extensive and in-depth array of material related to Charles Darwin's life and contributions to science, including a copy of his seminal work, The Origin of Species. -Dinosaur Discoveries: Ancient Fossils, New Ideas is an adapted, small-scale (1,500 sq. ft.) version of the Museum's full-scale exhibition Dinosaurs, Ancient Fossils, New Discoveries, suitable for travel to venues with smaller exhibition galleries and budgets. -Opulent Oceans was inspired by the book Opulent Oceans: Extraordinary Rare Book Selections from the American Museum of Natural History Library, by Dr. Melanie L.J. Stiassny, the Axelrod Research Curator and Curator in the Department of Ichthyology, the exhibition includes 46 striking, large-format reproductions from 32 rare and beautifully illustrated scientific works from the Museum's Library. -Picturing Science: Museum Scientists and Imaging Technologies is an exhibition with more than 20 sets of images are displayed in large format, giving visitors a sense of the wide range of research topics under investigation at AMNH as well as the various optical tools in use here. -Natural Histories was inspired by the book Natural Histories: Extraordinary Rare Book Selections from the American Museum of Natural History Library, published in October 2012, by Thomas Baione, Harold Boeschenstein Director, Department of Library Services. This exhibition includes 50 striking, large-format reproductions from more than 25 rare and beautifully illustrated scientific works from the Museum Library's Rare Book collection. |
| Part I, Question 1, Part III Question 1(Continued) | DIGITAL MEDIA/COMMUNICATIONS The Museum maintains a dynamic digital media presence, anchored by the amnh.org website, which offers online ticketing and visitor information; extensive coverage of and resources for the Museum's permanent and temporary exhibitions; information about the Museum's educational offerings, including onsite programs for students beginning in pre-school through graduate school, and resources and professional development for teachers; information about the Museum's research programs and collections; and more. In FY19, the Museum updated its website, the latest in a series of updates that have included mobile optimization (2015) and the implementation of technical features to improve website accessibility (2016). The FY19 update improved the visual design of the site, introducing a more streamlined and contemporary look that is more intuitive for users and offers a better experience on mobile, which accounts for a growing proportion of visitors to amnh.org. The redesign earned a 2019 Webby nomination for amnh.org in the Website/Cultural Institution category. In addition, the FY19 web updates included web template adjustments that advanced the practice of search optimization on amnh.org, with the ultimate goal of raising discoverability and helping users from around the world find the Museum's exhibitions, scientific research, events and programs, and other online resources more easily. The Museum also continued to leverage its robust social media platforms, including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube, to engage directly with the public and to promote exhibitions, programs, and scientific research. New social media initiatives in FY19 included using new tools, including the Crowdriff platform, to identify high-quality user generated social content and showcase it on the Museum's website and social platforms during the celebration of the Museum's 150th anniversary and releasing dedicated GIPHY sticker packs for use on Instagram to promote Museum initiatives such as the 150th anniversary celebration, the opening of T. rex: The Ultimate Predator special exhibition, and the annual Manhattanhenge phenomenon. The latest release of the Museum's flagship mobile app, Explorer, took place in early June 2019. The release, on iOS and Android, included updates to two foreign-language versions of Explorer-Spanish and French-and the addition of Explorer in Portuguese. With Explorer now available in four languages on two operating systems, the app will be serving a larger-than-ever proportion of Museum visitors. The update also streamlined the onboarding process, refined user interface for the map and exhibit selections, and added amenity listings and exhibit content, including some augmented reality experiences for testing with visitors. |
