| FORM 990, PAGE 2, PART III, LINE 4B | WE SUPPORTED THE LAIKIPIA RABIES VACCINATION CAMPAIGN, BASED IN LAIKIPIA COUNTY, KENYA, A RURAL REGION WHERE PASTORAL COMMUNITIES LIVE AMONGST SOME OF THE HIGHEST BIODIVERSITY IN EAST AFRICA. THIS CLOSE PROXIMITY TO WILDLIFE CREATES AN ENVIRONMENT WHERE RABIES CAN EASILY JUMP FROM WILDLIFE TO DOMESTIC DOGS TO HUMANS. IN MOST LAIKIPIA COMMUNITIES, HOUSEHOLDS CANNOT AFFORD TO VACCINATE THEIR DOGS AGAINST RABIES AND LACK ACCESS TO HUMAN POST-EXPOSURE PROPHYLAXIS. THE LAIKIPIA RABIES VACCINATION CAMPAIGN AIMS TO ERADICATE RABIES IN THE COUNTY BY VACCINATING 70% OF ALL DOMESTIC DOGS. THE CAMPAIGN OFFERS EVERYONE EQUAL ACCESS TO PREVENTATIVE RABIES TREATMENT, RAISES AWARENESS ABOUT THE DEADLY DISEASE, AND EDUCATES PEOPLE ON HUMANE ANIMAL TREATMENT. THE CAMPAIGN HAS BEEN OPERATING FOR FIVE YEARS AND HAS TREATED THOUSANDS OF DOGS AND REACHED HUNDREDS OF COMMUNITIES. WE WERE ABLE TO EXPAND RABIES VACCINATIONS AND EDUCATION TO HUNDREDS OF COMMUNITIES IN LAIKIPIA COUNTY WHO WOULD OTHERWISE RECEIVE NO PREVENTATIVE RABIES CARE. OUR GOAL, IN LINE WITH GUIDANCE FROM THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION, IS TO ELIMINATE RABIES FROM LAIKIPIA COUNTY BY VACCINATING 70% OF DOMESTIC DOGS IN THE COUNTY FOR THREE CONSECUTIVE YEARS. THIS WILL ERADICATE THE DISEASE FROM DOMESTIC DOG POPULATIONS AND, BY EXTENSION, HUMANS. WE WERE ABLE TO REACH DOZENS MORE COMMUNITIES THAN PRIOR YEARS THROUGH THE PURCHASE OF RABIES VACCINES, FUEL TO REACH RURAL COMMUNITIES, AND MEDICAL SUPPLIES TO ENSURE THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF SAFETY AND SANITATION FOR BOTH VOLUNTEERS AND DOMESTIC DOGS. WE WERE ABLE TO RECRUIT MORE VOLUNTEERS TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF TEAMS ON THE GROUND IN COMMUNITIES ADMINISTERING VACCINATIONS. WE WERE ALSO ABLE TO TRAIN VOLUNTEERS ON USING A MOBILE APPLICATION TO RECORD DATA ABOUT VACCINATIONS AND OWNER INFORMATION. THIS HELPED ACCELERATE OUR UNDERSTANDING OF OUR PROGRESS TOWARDS OUR GOALS, POTENTIAL SETBACKS THAT TEAMS WERE FACING, AND INFORM SUBSEQUENT CAMPAIGN WEEKENDS. IMPORTANTLY, THIS GRANT ALSO ALLOWED US TO PURCHASE HUMAN POST-EXPOSURE PROPHYLAXIS FOR VOLUNTEER VETERINARIANS IN THE EVENT OF BITES OR SCRATCHES DURING VACCINATION. THIS VACCINE IS CRUCIAL FOR THE HEALTH OF VOLUNTEERS AND ALLOWS THEM TO BETTER DO THEIR WORK OF VACCINATING DOGS. IN TOTAL, 13,185 DOGS AND CATS WERE VACCINATED AGAINST RABIES IN 2019. |
| FORM 990, PAGE 2, PART III, LINE 4D | A.CREATED THE FRAMEWORK TO BUILD A CENTER OF EXCELLENCE WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE CONSERVATION IN SRI LANKA CONSISTING OF THE COUNTRY'S FIRST ELEPHANT HOSPITAL, A DIAGNOSTIC LABORATORY, WILDLIFE REHABILITATION FACILITY AS WELL AS THE FIRST EVER PILOT PROJECT USING ELEPHANT BEHAVIOR AS A MEANS TO MITIGATE HUMAN ELEPHANT CONFLICT. ORGANIZED A TRIP TO SRI LANKA TO EDUCATE DONORS ABOUT OUR WILDLIFE CONSERVATION INITIATIVES AND HOW WE MEASURE AND APPLY ANIMAL WELFARE METHODOLOGIES TO OUR PROGRAMS. DONORS WERE ABLE TO SEE OUR WORK WITH ELEPHANTS AND WILDLIFE FIRST HAND, WHILE LEARNING FROM OUR PARTNERS, EXPERTS AND COLLEAGUES FROM THE SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTE OF CONSERVATION BIOLOGY. B.GIVEN THAT MORE THAN 70% OF THE POPULATION OF MARSABIT, KENYA ARE DEPENDENT ON LIVESTOCK AS A SOURCE OF LIVELIHOOD, COMBATTING DROUGHT/FAMINE AND DISEASE IS PARAMOUNT. THIS PROGRAM MADE IT POSSIBLE TO RESPOND TO DISEASE OUTBREAKS BY PROVIDING CRITICAL VACCINATION CAMPAIGNS AND TREATMENT CAMPS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH SAUTI MOJA MARSABIT, KENYA. OVER 6000 GOATS BENEFITTED AND 40 DONKEYS WERE GIVEN COMFORTABLE SADDLE PADS AND HARNESSES ENABLING THEM TO CARRY WATER WITHOUT DEVELOPING PRESSURE SORES OR WOUNDS FROM POORLY-FITTING EQUIPMENT. C. IN PARTNERSHIP WITH HERD HEROES, WE SUPPORTED THE TRAINING AND STIPEND OF A FEMALE COMMUNITY ANIMAL HEALTH CARE WORKER (CAHW) IN L'AZILE HAITI WHERE THEY ARE FEW VETERINARIANS AND NO VETERINARY SCHOOLS. TWO LARGE-SCALE VACCINE/DEWORMING/ANIMAL IDENTIFICATION CLINICS HAD BEEN CONDUCTED WITH ATTENDANCE BY THE REGIONAL REPRESENTATIVE FROM THE MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE WHO OBSERVED THE CLINICS AND FIELDED QUESTIONS FROM COMMUNITY MEMBERS ABOUT INFECTIOUS DISEASES OF CONCERN. OVERALL 100 GOATS WERE TREATED DURING THE CLINIC AS WELL AS A SMALLER NUMBER OF DONKEYS AND CATTLE. TRAINING WAS GIVEN ON EMERGENCY INTERVENTION TACTICS ADDRESSING DEHYDRATION AND DIARRHEA IN LIVESTOCK. IN ADDITION, OVER A HUNDRED GOATS WERE GIVEN BASIC VETERINARY CARE AS MEDICAL ISSUES AROSE FROM WITHIN THE COMMUNITY. D.PROVIDED AN EDUCATION PROGRAM TEACHING STUDENTS IN THE SURIN ELEPHANT KINGDOM, THAILAND ABOUT ASIAN ELEPHANT BEHAVIOR AND CONSERVATION WITH THINK ELEPHANTS INTERNATIONAL (TEI). THE PROGRAM COVERED 6 TOPICS: ANIMAL BEHAVIOR, ELEPHANT BIOLOGY, CONSERVATION, HUMAN-ELEPHANT CONFLICT, RESEARCH METHODS AND DESIGN, AND WELFARE AND CAPTIVITY WITH THE GOAL OF BUILDING A KIND, COMPASSIONATE ELEPHANT-KEEPING COMMUNITY PUTTING ELEPHANT WELFARE AT THE FOREFRONT OF MANAGEMENT DECISIONS. E.SUPPORTED A WEEKEND-LONG HEALTHY PETS CLINIC WITH TNR TRUST IN NAIROBI KENYA WHICH PROVIDED RABIES VACCINATIONS TO 506 DOGS, 140 CATS AND STERILIZED 65 DOGS AND CATS. IN ADDITION, 137 CHILDREN WERE EDUCATED ABOUT EMPATHY, AND THE HUMANE TREATMENT AND CARE OF ANIMALS COVERING THEIR BASIC NEEDS OF NUTRITION, HOUSING, VETERINARY VISITS, EXERCISE AND GROOMING. |
