WE ARE REACHING TO MARGINS OF OUR COMMUNITY TO TARGET THE MOST UNDERSERVED SECTORS, WHILE PROVIDING WORLD-CLASS ENTERTAINMENT, PROFESSIONAL TRAINING AND CURRICULUM SUPPORT TO ALL. WE ARE EXPANDING WELL BEYOND THE GEOGRAPHY OF WALLA WALLA TO INCLUDE THE ENTIRE REGION, FROM PENDLETON TO TRICITIES AND FURTHER AFIELD. ANNUAL DIA DE LOS MUERTOS FESTIVAL WALLA WALLA'S ANNUAL DIA DE LOS MUERTOS FESTIVAL HELD IN OCTOBER IN COLLABORATION WITH WALLA WALLA PUBLIC SCHOOLS, WHITMAN COLLEGE, ARTWALLA, AND LOCAL BUSINESSES. THIS COLLABORATIVE COMMUNITY EVENT IS FREE TO THE PUBLIC AND CELEBRATES THE MEXICAN "DAY OF THE DEAD" HOLIDAY WHERE PEOPLE GATHER TO HONOR THE LIVES OF DEPARTED FRIENDS AND FAMILY - FEATURING A VARIETY OF FAMILY-FRIENDLY ACTIVITIES INCLUDING LIVE MUSIC, KIDS' ACTIVITIES, PRINTMAKING, SUGAR SKULLS, CLAY WORKS, COLORFUL ALTARS, AND TRADITIONAL DANCE PERFORMANCES. ARTIST SAMUEL BECCERA WORE A TRADITIONAL NATIVE DRESS AND PERFORMED RITUAL MUSIC AND DANCE. FOLLOWING HIS PERFORMANCE WITH A TRADITIONAL CLAY ACTIVITY FOR OVER 200 CHILDREN. AT THE CENTER OF THE FESTIVAL IS THE POPULAR "STEAMROLLER PRINT PROJECT" LED BY WHITMAN COLLEGE. RELIEFS ARE CARVED INTO WOODEN BLOCKS DEPICTING ICONIC DIA DE LOS MUERTOS IMAGES (SKULLS, SKELETONS, HARVEST, AND NATURE), AND A STEAMROLLER IS USED AS A PRINTING PRESS TO CREATE GIANT PRINTS THAT WERE DONATED TO THE SCHOOLS TO DISPLAY IN THEIR HALLWAYS. PRIOR TO THE FESTIVAL VOLUNTEER TEACHERS BROUGHT HANDS-ON ART PROJECTS TO THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS. PROJECTS INCLUDED ALTERS AND SKULL MASKS AND REACHED 175 STUDENTS. THE FESTIVAL BRINGS TOGETHER AN INCREDIBLY DIVERSE CROWD FROM WALLA WALLA AND THE TRI-CITIES. INCREMENTAL WEATHER DROPPED 2019 FESTIVAL ATTENDANCE TO AROUND 450 ATTENDEES. THE FESTIVAL ENGAGED OVER 700 THIS YEAR. SUMMER SHAKESPEARE PRODUCTION SWW BROUGHT THE RUDE MECHANICALS FROM TRI-CITIES OVER TO WALLA WALLA TO PUT ON A ONE-WEEKEND PRODUCTION OF 12TH NIGHT AT THE OUTDOOR THEATRE ON WHITMAN COLLEGE CAMPUS. BOTH ADULTS AND CHILDREN ATTENDED. INCREMENTAL WEATHER LIMITED ATTENDANCE TO 200. ANTI-BULLYING - MIDDLE SCHOOL USING SHAKESPEARE AS OUR GUIDE, 6TH GRADE STUDENTS ARE ENGAGED IN THE SUBJECT OF BULLYING. STUDENTS WATCH A LIVE 50-MINUTE PERFORMANCE OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE'S TWELFTH NIGHT PERFORMED BY OUR TEACHING ARTISTS. AFTER A SHORT QUESTION AND ANSWER PERIOD, THE PERFORMANCE IS FOLLOWED UP WITH 50- MINUTES, HANDS-ON ANTI-BULLYING WORKSHOPS CONDUCTED BY OUR TEACHING ARTISTS IN THE CLASSROOM. WATCHING THIS SHAKESPEARE CLASSIC GIVES STUDENTS AN OPPORTUNITY TO LOOK AT BULLYING AS OBSERVERS. THE IN-CLASSROOM WORKSHOP GIVES EACH CLASS AN OPPORTUNITY TO DISCUSS BULLYING, INCORPORATING WHAT CONSTITUTES BULLYING, SELF-CONFIDENCE BUILDING WHILE DELIVERING PLANS AND IDEAS FOR COPING SKILLS. OUR TEACHING ARTISTS ARE FAMILIAR WITH THE SUBJECT AND ARE ABLE TO FOCUS ON AND ADDRESS ISSUES THE STUDENTS MAY BRING UP. THIS PROGRAM, DEVELOPED BY THE COLORADO SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL AND THE UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO, IS DESIGNED TO HELP STUDENTS AND TEACHERS RECOGNIZE AND COMBAT THE EFFECTS OF BULLYING. SHAKESPEARE WALLA WALLA IS ONE OF ONLY A HANDFUL OF COMPANIES ALLOWED TO ADOPT THE CURRICULUM FROM THE UNIVERSITY. PENDLETON'S SUNRIDGE MIDDLE SCHOOL, TOUCHET MIDDLE SCHOOL, ASSUMPTION, AND WAITSBURG PARTICIPATED IN 2018-2019 SCHOOL YEAR. THE FESTIVAL AS A WHOLE ENGAGED OVER 600 PEOPLE. FUNDING FOR THIS PROGRAM WAS NOT RECEIVED UNTIL DECEMBER, 2018. ANTI-BULLYING MONTH IS GENERALLY IN OCTOBER SO OUR PARTICIPATION IN THIS PROGRAM WAS LIMITED THIS YEAR. ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ANTI-BULLYING - WE RECEIVED FUNDING FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PROGRAM FROM A LOCAL PARTNER LAST FALL. THIS PROGRAM IS AIMED AT 3RD GRADERS AND WILL BE OFFERED FOR PRESENTATION IN THE FALL OF 2020. IN-SCHOOL RESIDENCY - LIVING WITH SHAKESPEARE OUR ANNUAL RESIDENCY PROGRAM WAS DEVELOPED IN RELATION TO THE STATE CURRICULUM TO HELP FRESHMAN STUDENTS CONNECT TO THE CURRICULUM AND IMMERSE THE STUDENTS FOR FIVE DAYS IN ACTIVITY-BASED LEARNING. THE CURRICULUM BALANCES LEARNING ABOUT THE CULTURE OF SHAKESPEARE'S DAY, EXPLORING SHAKESPEARE ON THE STAGE, AND CONNECTING SHAKESPEARE TO THE VALUES OF A MODERN WORLD. WE ALSO LOOK TO INSTILL THE RESPECT FOR CULTURE AND COMMUNITY THAT COMES FROM UNDERSTANDING ART AND ARTIST THAT HAS INFLUENCED THE VERY LANGUAGE WE USE TODAY. AS THE CAPSTONE, STUDENTS SAW A LIVE PRODUCTION OF ROMEO AND JULIET PUT ON BY THE SEATTLE SHAKESPEARE COMPANY. THERE WERE OVER 600 STUDENTS AND TEACHERS IN ATTENDANCE. PARTICIPATING SCHOOLS INCLUDE: PENDLETON'S SUNRIDGE MIDDLE SCHOOL, TOUCHET HIGH SCHOOL, DESALES, AND WALLA WALLA HIGH SCHOOL. A TOTAL OF 94 HOURS OF INSTRUCTION WERE PROVIDED. |
