Part III response or note to any other line in Part III Mission-The Peoples Defense Initiative is a community-led grassroots organization focused on uplifting and implementing progressive and inclusive policies which promote community engagement and defend human rights. Through direct action organizing, transformative leadership development, advocacy, coalition building, and education, PDI seeks to defend and uplift the voices of marginalized communities by catapulting their leadership directly to positions of public office.Social & economic justice for all people regardless of their gender, socioeconomic background, ability, or immigration status. We are committed to purposeful and radical inclusivity of all people regardless of their sex, gender, class, education, immigration status, sexuality, physical ability, and faith. PROGRAM ACCOMPLISHMEMETS:Prop 205 Tucson Families Free & Together: Tucson Families Free & Together was a grassroots effort spearheaded by Peoples Defense Initiative with dozens of community groups signed on as endorsing partners. As a true testament to the decades of Tucson resistance, the objective of our flagship campaign was to uplift policies which ensure that our local government is committed to protecting and defending all its residents regardless of their immigration status. Divestment: In coalition with many Tucson groups, we demanded that the city of Tucson divest from entities and corporations which assist in deportation, family separation, and incarceration of migrants. Free the Children Coalition: This coalition was created by concerned activists, clergy, and other community members who mounted a local response to the family separation policy at the border. Free the Children Coalition consisted of the Peoples Defense Initiative, ACLU, Coalicin Derechos Humanos, Justice Alliance, Southside Workers Center, The Poor Peoples Campaign, Chukson Water Protectors, PALF, Frontera Wesley Foundation of Tucson, Colibri Center, YWCA STAT, Jewish Voices for Peace, Refuse Fascism and many community leaders and activists. No on Stonegarden: In 2018 we mounted a campaign to mobilize our community to demand that the Pima County Board of Supervisors unequivocally reject Stonegarden funds for the current year and for all upcoming years. With hundreds of community members activated we organized several press conferences and rallies and in turn defeated Stonegarden in 2018. This resulted in several concessions- a community review board and an anti- racial profiling internal policy for the Pima County sheriffs department (the first in their history).
