| ORGANIZATION'S MISSION AND SIGNIFICANT ACTIVITIES | FORM 990, PART III, LINE 1 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION SALT LAKE FILM SOCIETY'S MISSION IS TO EDUCATE, ADVOCATE, AND INFORM ABOUT AND THROUGH CINEMA. PROMOTE DIVERSITY THROUGH FILM EXHIBITION AND CREATION. FOSTER FILM TALENT AND CULTIVATE FILM APPRECIATION AND PARTICIPATION. THE PROGRAMS AND VENUES ENSURE THAT THE POTENT IDEAS AND VOICES OF FILM ARE ACCESSIBLE TO EVERYONE IN OUR COMMUNITY. FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4 - PROGRAM SERVICE ACCOMPLISHMENTS SLFS' contributions to the vibrancy of the artistic and cultural community were strongly reinforced in 2019 showing once again that SLFS is not afraid to take creative chances, integrate new technologies and embrace change as opportunity to evolve. In 2019, SLFS regular and special event film programming offered 227 quality, independent, international, documentary, local, classic and repertory films. 187 of those films, were exclusive to SLFS venues and not exhibited theatrically anywhere else in the state. SLFS two venues, with a total of seven screens, were the only places where audiences could see 91 international films, and 70 documentaries. Of the 227 films exhibited, two-thirds garnered critical acclaim and won major awards. 2019 featured the 10th anniversary of both the three-day Czech and the two-day Filmexico film tours, and the new, two-day Isreel, Israeli film tour. All three brought international filmmakers to SLC to meet with audiences for pre-screening introductions and extensive Q&A's. Artists included Academy Award winning Israeli filmmaker Guy Nattiv, Czech Director Radim Spacek, Mexican Director Ehecatl Garcia and Mexican actress Concepcion Marquez. The Life Changing Documentaries Series featured 32 curated titles highlighting five locally made documentary films and four filmmakers whose work has special relevance to Utahans. These films are; Vessel by director, Diana Whitten, One Revolution and Quiet Heroes by Amanda Stoddard, and Sons of Perdition by Tyler Measom and Jennilyn Merten. The MAST Media Accelerator Studio exists to discover animation and tech-enabled artists and to connect, nurture and empower them into tech-savvy artist entrepreneurs. In its first full year, this innovative education program built a vibrant and energetic cultural community in the following ways. MAST selected 8 fellows, 50% of whom were POC & women. Two fellows projects are on track to be picked up by HBO and Nickelodeon. MAST engaged 22 high level industry professionals to work with the SLC arts community including JD Payne (Lord of the Rings, Amazon), Eric Doctorow former CEO of Paramount Studios, and Jeremiah Zagar, Emmy nominated writer and producer. MAST also offered 9 labs for local filmmakers and fellows covering topics including personal branding, content distribution and Virtual Reality. SLFS' presentation of the immersive virtual reality film in a three-month long free exhibit, Traveling While Black (TWB), was a bold contribution to residents of the county as well as a cutting-edge approach integrating VR filmmaking within a traditional art house setting. TWB is a cinematic virtual reality (VR) experience involving VR goggles and headsets that immerses the viewer in the long history of restriction of movement for black Americans and the continuing struggle for their safety. Academy Award winner Roger Ross Williams and Emmy Award-winning Felix & Paul Studios' crafted this extraordinary film that shares an intimate series of moments with several of the patrons of Ben's Chili Bowl in D.C. as they reflect on their personal experiences of restricted movement and racial violence in the U.S. TWB highlights the urgent need to not only remember the past but to learn from it. VR technology imbeds the viewer inside the black experience, whether sitting next to Samira Rice in a booth at Bens or riding in the back of a bus during segregation, this immersion brings history together with emotion and heightened physicality that accelerates understanding, empathy and dialogue about the challenges of safety and equality for Black Americans today. Through this exhibit, SLFS provided access and raised awareness for thousands of residents about the long history of racial disparity in this country. To increase the outreach opportunities of the TWB exhibit, CEO Tori Baker created a paid internship program targeted to engage young people of color. By reaching out to colleges, universities, refugee and minority employment agencies she found a group of seven talented interns. The interns went through an intensive training process which involved learning how to talk about race, role playing potential customer responses and learning how to be respectful of physical privacy while placing headsets and VR goggles on other peoples bodies. Weekly meetings, advanced trainings, mentorship and group support continued throughout the run of the exhibit. TWB impacted the community on many different levels; from raising awareness and bringing different demographics together, to introducing people to new technology and sparking conversations. It was an honor and privilege for SLFS to provide this remarkable film experience to everyone in the community free of charge. SLFS reached economically under-served, gender, racial, and ethnic minorities and differently-abled communities in the county by offering Matinee discount prices daily on all film titles, membership discount prices, concessions discounts, and free video rentals. Volunteer program offers movie vouchers for those on a fixed income, 2019 free attendance of 21,905 and an additional 17,457 reduced admissions, 464 free activities and events, 14,000 low cost, high quality film presentations everyday. Free programs include, School Nights Series, a free film each Tuesday night for 21 and younger. Big Pictures, Little People, bus transportation and snacks for 1500 underserved children. Ivory Tower film and lecture series for college students. Free Cultural Tours including Czech, Filmexico, Screendance and Isreel Free venue rental for 28 local non-profits. As well as SLFSathome virtual platform offering free content and discounts. Service to gender, racial and ethnic minorities through annual film programming including 91 international films and 78 films directed by people of color, 59 films with a person of color in a leading role, 51 films with a female director 73 films with subtitles, and 28 films with LGBTQ content. Service to the differently-abled included weekly open captioned screenings, assistive listening devices, closed caption devices, and audio narration available. Sign language interpreter at all cultural tours and some special events. Special screenings for Autistic individuals and those on the spectrum. Wheelchair access and ADA approved seating at both venues. SLFS accomplishments in 2019 highlight the proactive approach SLFS is taking to the rapidly changing landscape of film exhibition. |
