| Other | In June 2019, KFNA organized the 5th annual Kingfield PorchFest. Despite a wet day, the skies cleared right at 6 PM and most of the 50 scheduled bands still performed until the rain came back through at about 8:30. This free event offers access to local, musical performances on 30 stages on a single summer evening. This wildly popular, financially self-supporting event offers local musicians a way to share their talents with their neighbors, as well as serves as a promotional event that draws people both to the neighborhood, and out of their homes, for an evening. August found KFNA's Board of Directors biking across the neighborhood again, visiting over 50 block parties and delivering Kingfielders the sweetest National Night Out experience everfree, locally made Sebastian Joe's! " September brought back Nicollet Open Streets for the 6th year. KFNA again hosted and co-organized this event with the Lyndale Neighborhood Association. Attendance reached over 15,000 people who spent the afternoon walking and biking the 2.5 mile stretch of Nicollet Avenue from Lake Street down to 46th Street until the rain came just before 4 PM. The event also celebrated KFNA's partnership with the Brewery Running Series, who financially supported the event by hosting the 2nd Nicollet Run for Beer. " September also launched Kingfield Boomerang Bags. Volunteers gathered on the 3rd Tuesday in Butter's cozy community space and sewed reusable shopping bags to give to local stores. These are then given to customers who then wouldn't need a plastic bag. KFNA also advocated for, and educated the public about, the new Minneapolis ordinance to charge a fee for all plastic and paper bags also. " In October, 10 additional Kingfield neighbors were trained by the University of Minnesota to become Minneapolis Park Board Citizen Pruners. These citizens will help care for boulevard trees citywide, and many have also agreed to tend the newly planted Kingfield Orchard, located at MLK Park. " In 2019, KFNA partnered with Minneapolis Climate Action on a Hennepin County grant to increase organic composting. Together we worked with two churches and a local restaurant to switch their sites to organics. We also met three times with two different ELL classes, and created and hosted a Green Trivia game that we hosted at a local bar in July, AND on a bus while we took 20 neighbors to visit the organic drop-off site in October. " In November, KFNA hosted a Boots to the Ground, 365 to Get Out the Vote event in cooperation with a local restaurant owner. Twenty-five neighbors attended and committed to various actions for the 2020 year including election judging, serving as Get Out the Vote block captains, assisting with Kingfield Polling Parties, and assisting with signage and outreach. " In December, KFNA attended a State Training on the Census and formed a Complete Count Committee to help share the word about the importance, and process, of the 2020 Census. " In February 2020, KFNA fed neighbors and raised money for Nicollet Square, a project of Beacon Interfaith Housing, at the 9th annual Kingfield Empty Bowls event. Unlimited homemade soup was given to attendees in handmade bowls in return for a donation. Over 400 Kingfield neighbors attended and raised over $5000 of discretionary funding for this affordable youth housing option. COVID-19 was ushered into Minnesota in March 2020 and many of our spring and summer event plans were scrapped. Instead, KFNA has continued to connect our community and address issues by: o Distributing letters to all neighbors to make sure all are ok and have the resources, connections, and help they need during the pandemic. o Stepping in when state and city agencies couldn't, to organize the collection of Census 2020 data from low-income, non-English speaking community members. o Organizing and promoting grocery distribution events to families in need. o Hosting a meeting to connect neighbors and disseminate verified safety information following the murder of George Floyd. o Funding The Theatre of Public Policy's workshops on talking about race, racism, white supremacy and holding space for these difficult, important conversations. o Employing youth as artists and visible caretakers in our community, when teen job-training programs were cancelled due to COVID-19. o Supporting and connecting our resident-leaders in working with our unhoused neighbors in MLK Park to make sure everyone is treated with respect and has housing this winter to transition into. o Digging deeper into the issues of homelessness in our community by financially supporting and seeking out affordable housing partners and options. o Organizing neighbors to talk about and advocate for Kingfield friendly new builds (currans site etc). o Building our Block Connections and distribution list to reach all neighbors through direct flyering and weekly emails. o Registering neighbors to vote and making sure everyone has a voting plan. o Moving our monthly board meetings online and broadening participation with small-groups focused on racial-justice topics. o Continuing to be the connector that allows all members of our community to be heard and have a way to reach out and organize. |
