THE 80-FOOT TOWER IS FILLED WITH STUNNING MURALS OF AMERICAN INDIAN LIFE, WHICH WERE RESTORED OVER THREE YEARS WITH GCC SUPPORT. OUTSIDE, THE DESERT VIEW INTER-TRIBAL HERITAGE SITE WILL EVOLVE FROM A TRADITIONAL SCENIC OVERLOOK INTO A PLACE FOR FIRST-VOICE CULTURAL INTERPRETATION BY ASSOCIATED AMERICAN INDIAN TRIBES, EXPOSING VISITORS TO THE CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE OF THE AREA WHILE INFORMING THEM ABOUT TOURISM OPPORTUNITIES ON SURROUNDING TRIBAL LANDS. PROTECTING THE NIGHT SKY: GRAND CANYON RECEIVED PROVISIONAL CERTIFICATION IN 2016 AS AN INTERNATIONAL DARK SKY PARK. GCC SUPPORTERS FUNDED AN INVENTORY OF EVERY LIGHT BULB AND FIXTURE IN THE 1.2 MILLION ACRE PARK WHICH IS HOME TO 2,500 RESIDENTS. THE PROCESS OF RETROFITTING OLD FIXTURES AND BULBS WITH STATE-OF-THE-ART LIGHTING THAT DOESN'T POLLUTE THE NIGHT SKY BEGAN IN 2017 AND CONTINUES TODAY. IN 2019, GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK RECEIVED INTERNATIONAL DARK-SKY PARK STATUS FROM THE INTERNATIONAL DARK SKY ASSOCIATION AND WAS ALSO NAMED DARK SKY PLACE OF THE YEAR. AS OF 12/31/19, 1,750 LIGHTS IN THE PARK HAD BEEN REPLACED, BRINGING THE PARK TO 69% COMPLIANCE. OVER THE NEXT FIVE YEARS, THE GOAL IS TO MAKE 90% OF THE LIGHTS IN THE PARK DARK SKY COMPLIANT. KIDS AT THE CANYON: GCC FUNDING SUPPORTS NUMEROUS NPS EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS, SUCH AS ON-SITE FIELD TRIPS, RANGERS IN THE CLASSROOM, AND TEACHER ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION WORKSHOPS. 30,000 YOUNG PEOPLE COMPLETED A SERIES OF ACTIVITIES DURING THEIR PARK VISIT TO EARN AN OFFICIAL JUNIOR RANGER PATCH AND CERTIFICATE.
