THE CITY OF AKRON'S RECYCLING CONTAMINATION RATE IN EARLY 2019 WAS 39% AND WE WERE IN JEOPARDY OF LOSING THE ABILITY TO RECYCLE IN AKRON. RECYCLING CONTAMINATION-MEANING INCORRECT OR SOILED MATERIALS PLACED INTO THE RECYCLING SYSTEM-INCREASES COSTS, DECREASES RECOVERY OF RECYCLABLE MATERIALS AND THREATENS THE SUSTAINABILITY OF THE CITY'S RECYCLING PROGRAM. THE RECYCLE RIGHT CAMPAIGN IS DESIGNED TO REDUCE THE CONTAMINATION IN AKRON'S RECYCLING STREAM THROUGH EDUCATIONAL EFFORTS ACROSS AKRON. THE SERVICE DIRECTOR AND KAB CEO KNEW THAT WE NEEDED TO DO SOMETHING- SO WE APPLIED FOR NEWLY RELEASED GRANT FUNDING, TO FUND THE PROGRAM. ONCE FUNDED, KEEP AKRON BEAUTIFUL ACTED AS THE PROGRAM MANAGER, MANAGING ALL OF THE RECYCLING INSPECTORS. THE CITY OF AKRON MANAGED ALL OF THE ROUTES THAT THE INSPECTORS VISITED DAILY, THE INITIATIVE MOBILIZED SPECIALLY-TRAINED PERSONNEL TO CONDUCT CURBSIDE CART OBSERVATIONS, EACH DAY FOR TWELVE WEEKS, JUNE-AUGUST. RESIDENTS WHO HAD NON-RECYCLABLE MATERIAL IN THEIR RECYCLING CARTS RECEIVED INFORMATIONAL "OOPS" TAGS ON THEIR CARTS WITH DIRECT FEEDBACK DESIGNED TO IMPROVE COMPLIANCE WITH PROPER RECYCLING GUIDELINES. THE RECYCLE RIGHT CAMPAIGN YIELDED SIGNIFICANT RESULTS - WITH THE QUALITY OF AKRON'S RECYCLABLES IMPROVING CONSIDERABLY. THE CITY OF AKRON'S CONTAMINATION RATE WENT FROM 39% TO 27.2%, WHICH REPRESENTS A 30% OVERALL REDUCTION IN CONTAMINATION. THE CITY AND KAB HOPE THAT RECYCLE RIGHT AND OTHER EDUCATION EFFORTS WILL REDUCE THAT RATE EVEN FURTHER, IN THE FUTURE. KEEP AKRON BEAUTIFUL WAS RECOGNIZED NATIONALLY, AT THE KEEP AMERICA BEAUTIFUL NATIONAL CONFERENCE, WINNING THE "2019 COMMUNITY IMPROVEMENT AWARD" IN THE RECYCLING CATEGORY, FOR THE AMAZING CHANGE IN CONTAMINATION RECYCLE-BOWL RECYCLING COMPETITION AMONGST AKRON SCHOOLS: THE RECYCLE-BOWL COMPETITION IS A PROGRAM THAT HELPS TO RECOGNIZE THE IMPORTANCE OF AMERICA RECYCLES DAY ON NOVEMBER 15 AND THE IMPORTANCE OF RECYCLING.
