OUR OBJECTIVE AND MISSION IS TO PRESERVE OUR CULTURE, ARTS, LANGUAGE, AND PROVIDE GUIDANCE TO THE YOUNG GENERATION OF UTAH TIBETANS. WE ARE ALSO COMMITTED TO DIVERSIFY OUR ORGANIZATION BY INTERACTING WITH OTHER CULTURE AND COMMUNITIES. |

IN ADDITION, ALMOST EVERY WEEK, THE UTAH TIBETAN ASSOCIATION HAS SUNDAY PRAYERS AND SCHOOL WHERE AT LEAST 50 - 60 OF OUR COMMUNITY MEMBERS GATHER TO PRACTICE TIBETAN RELIGION, LANGUAGE AND CULTURE. THE UTAH TIBETAN ASSOCIATION ALSO SERVES AS A RESOURCE FOR OUR COMMUNITY MEMBERS. IN THE BEGINNING OF FEBRUARY, WE CELEBRATED THE TIBETAN NEW YEAR (LOSAR) WITH CULTURAL PERFORMANCES AND DINNER WITH APPROXIMATELY OVER 150 OF OUR MEMBERS IN ATTENDANCE. IN MARCH, UTAH TIBETAN ASSOCIATION MARKED THE 60TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CHINESE OCCUPATION OF TIBET. UTA MEMBERS TOOK PART IN PROTEST AND DEMONSTRATION AT THE STATE CAPITOL AND FEDERAL BUILDING. IN APRIL, THE 11TH PANCHEN LAMA'S BIRTHDAY WAS CELEBRATED BY THE CHILDREN ATTENDING OUR SUNDAY TIBETAN SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS. IN MAY, UTA PARTICIPATED IN THE LIVING TRADITIONS FESTIVAL BY PERFORMING CULTURAL DANCE AND THE COMMUNITY MEMBERS VOLUNTEERED TO MAKE AND SELL TRADITIONAL TIBETAN FOOD. UTAH TIBETAN ASSOCIATION WAS ONE OF THE 20 FOOD VENDORS, AND SOLD OUR POPULAR TIBETAN FOODS, ALL OF WHICH WERE MADE BY MEMBERS OF OUR COMMUNITY. THE FESTIVAL IS OUR OPPORTUNITY TO REACH THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE IN OUR LARGER SALT LAKE COMMUNITY AND OUR BIGGEST FUNDRAISER. IN JUNE, THE UTA SUNDAY SCHOOL CHILDREN PARTICIPATED IN PERFORMING TRADITIONAL TIBETAN SONGS AND DANCES AT THE 2019 ASIAN FESTIVAL AND THE UTAH TIBETAN ASSOCIATION EXECUTIVE MEMBERS AND COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS DISPLAYED A TIBETAN CULTURAL BOOTH TO SHOWCASE TIBETAN CULTURE TO DIFFERENT COMMUNITIES IN UTAH. ON JUNE 23RD THE UTA HOSTED THE INTERNATIONAL CAMPAIGN FOR TIBET WITH GUESTS FORMER POLITICAL PRISONER IN TIBET, DHONDUP WANGCHEN AND GRAMMY NOMINEE TIBETAN MUSICIAN, NGAWANG KHECHOG. ON JUNE 29TH, THE UTAH TIBETAN ASSOCIATION HOSTED VENERABLE DRUPSING RINPOCHE A TIBETAN BUDDHIST TEACHER WHO PROVIDED A TIBETAN BUDDHIST TEACHING AND BLESSINGS TO THE COMMUNITY MEMBERS. IN JULY, UTA CELEBRATED THE 84TH BIRTHDAY OF HIS HOLINESS THE 14TH DALAI LAMA. WE HAD MORNING PRAYER FOR LONG LIFE AND AN EVENING PROGRAM TO CELEBRATE THE LIFE OF HIS HOLINESS. FROM JULY- AUGUST DURING THE WEEKENDS, THE UTAH TIBETAN ASSOCIATION HOSTED THE 2019 TIBETAN SCHOOL SUMMER CAMP, WHICH PROVIDED STUDENTS AN OPPORTUNITY TO CONNECT WITH THEIR TIBETAN CULTURE, TRADITION AND RELIGION. THE STUDENTS ENJOYED VARIOUS ACTIVITIES SUCH AS FIELD TRIPS, PLAYING TRADITIONAL TIBETAN GAMES AND PRESENTING ASPECTS OF BEING TIBETAN THEY ARE MOST PROUD OF. 35 CHILDREN AND THEIR PARENTS ATTENDED THE SUMMER CAMP FROM THE LOCAL TIBETAN COMMUNITY. ON AUGUST 31, 2019 WE HELD THE TIBETAN DEMOCRACY DAY CELEBRATION. DURING THE MONTHS OF AUGUST AND SEPTEMBER, UTA ALSO HOSTED TIBETAN BUDDHIST TEACHER KHEN RINPOCHE, WHO GAVE WEEKLY TIBETAN BUDDHIST TEACHINGS TO THE COMMUNITY MEMBERS EVERY SUNDAY FOR A FEW WEEKS. IN OCTOBER WE CELEBRATED BOTH THE AWARDING OF THE CONGRESSIONAL GOLD MEDAL TO H.H. THE DALAI LAMA AND THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE DEDICATION OF THE UTAH TIBETAN COMMUNITY CENTER. IN DECEMBER, THE YEAR ENDED WITH OUR CELEBRATION, TWO SEPARATE EVENTS, OF THE AWARDING OF THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE TO H.H. THE DALAI LAMA AND NEW YEAR'S EVE. |
