50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE MOON LANDINGTHE FOUNDATION COLLABORATED WITH AMBASSADOR CAROLINE KENNEDY TO PRODUCE A DAY-LONG SYMPOSIUM HIGHLIGHTING THE HISTORY THAT LED TO THE FIRST MOON LANDING, CURRENT SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNOLOGICAL SPACE INITIATIVES, AND THE FUTURE OF SPACE EXPLORATION. THE JFK SPACE SUMMIT FEATURED SIX DIFFERENT SOLD-OUT PANELS, WITH BOEING CEO DENNIS MUILENBURG, APOLLO 11 ASTRONAUT MICHAEL COLLINS, AND AMAZON AND BLUE ORIGIN CEO JEFF BEZOS. THE JFK LIBRARY AND FOUNDATION COMMEMORATED THE JULY 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE MOON LANDING WITH THE 2019 JFK SPACE FEST: THE EAGLE HAS LANDED. THIS PUBLIC CELEBRATION FEATURED GUEST SPEAKERS FORMER ASTRONAUTS DR. FRANKLIN CHANG DIAZ AND DAN BURBANK; FORMER NASA ENGINEER AND INVENTOR, DR. LONNIE JOHNSON; AND NASA ENGINEER FOR SPACE SUITS AND THE MARS MISSION, SU CURLEY. ASTROPHYSICISTS AND SCIENTISTS FROM THE HARVARD SMITHSONIAN ASTROPHYSICS CENTER, AND GRADUATE STUDENTS FROM THE MIT AERONAUTICS AND ASTRONAUTICS PROGRAMS ENGAGED VISITORS OF ALL AGES WITH HANDS-ON AND VIRTUAL REALITY ACTIVITIES WHILE POETS PREPARED SPACE-THEMED POETRY ON DEMAND ON TOPICS OF VISITORS' CHOOSING AND TAPE ARTISTS CREATED AN IMAGE OF THE EAGLE LANDING ON THE MOON ON THE FRONT OF THE BUILDING. THIS MILESTONE ANNIVERSARY PROGRAM EDUCATED AND INSPIRED 3,700 CHILDREN, YOUTH AND ADULTS. VISITORS AGES 17 AND UNDER WERE ADMITTED FREE OF CHARGE.FOR THE LOCAL COMMUNITY FROM HARBOR POINT TO VISITORS WHO CAME FROM OUT OF STATE, THE ATMOSPHERE WAS ONE OF ENGAGEMENT FROM LAUNCHING ROCKETS WITH MIT GRADUATE STUDENTS AND RECREATING THE GEOGRAPHY OF THE MOON IN A HANDS-ON ACTIVITY TO EXPLORING THE GEMINI MODEL AND CAREFULLY INVESTIGATING EVERY SQUARE INCH OF THE MUSEUM GALLERIES. WE RECEIVED TERRIFIC FEEDBACK ON THE EVENT SPEAKERS, ESPECIALLY DR. LONNIE JOHNSON, ENGINEER AND INVENTOR, WHO CONTEXTUALIZED HIS CAREER WITHIN THE HISTORY OF RACIAL INEQUALITIES OF THE 20TH CENTURY AND TODAY. FORMER ASTRONAUTS DR. FRANKLIN CHANG DIAZ AND DAN BURBANK, AND NASA SPACESUIT ENGINEER SU CURLEY (AND "LARRY" THE SPACESUIT) WERE ALL MET WITH CAPACITY AUDIENCES AND MUCH APPRECIATION FOR THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS TO SPACE EXPLORATION, TECHNOLOGY AND RESEARCH. OTHER VISITORS COMMENTED ON THEIR EXPERIENCES INTERACTING WITH THE SCIENTISTS FROM THE HARVARD/SMITHSONIAN CENTER FOR ASTROPHYSICS, EXCITED BY THE CHANCE TO VIEW THE MILKY WAY THROUGH VIRTUAL REALITY GOGGLES OR THE ACHIEVEMENT OF LEARNING ABOUT BINARY CODE OR DEEPENING THEIR KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE SUN, EARTH, AND EARTH'S MOON.MANY VISITORS NOTED THAT THEY ATTENDED BECAUSE THEY WANTED TO CELEBRATE THIS GREAT HUMAN ACHIEVEMENT, EITHER BECAUSE THEY HAD WITNESSED IT OR BECAUSE THEY WANTED TO INSPIRE THEIR CHILDREN OR BE INSPIRED THEMSELVES BY THE WORK THAT CONTINUES AS PART OF APOLLO 11'S LEGACY. TO SUPPORT THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF PUTTING A MAN ON THE MOON, AND PRESIDENT KENNEDY'S ROLE IN MAKING THIS HAPPEN, THE FOUNDATION WORKED WITH A VENDOR TO DEVELOP THE JFK MOONSHOT AUGMENTED REALITY (AR) APP, WHICH TOOK USERS ON A FIVE-DAY AR EXPERIENCE, FROM A SIMULATED LAUNCH OF THE SATURN V ROCKET TO THE LUNAR LANDING. ON JULY 16, 2019, WE USED THE JFK MOONSHOT TO LAUNCH AN AWE-INSPIRING FULL-SIZED, 363-FEET TALL REPLICA OF THE APOLLO 11 NEAR THE GROUNDS OF THE JFK LIBRARY IN FRONT OF AN AUDIENCE OF THOUSANDS. THE APP IS STILL AVAILABLE FOR PUBLIC USE BY FREE DOWNLOAD ON ITUNES AND GOOGLE PLAY. THIS PRODUCES A TABLETOP-SIZED REPLICA OF THE APOLLO 11 ALONG WITH ASSOCIATED GAMES, ALL PLACED IN THE CONTEXT OF PRESIDENT KENNEDY'S VISION TO LAND A MAN ON THE MOON BEFORE THE END OF THE DECADE. THE JFK MOONSHOT WAS NOMINATED FOR NINE SHORTY SOCIAL GOOD AWARDS. WHILE THE SHORTY AWARDS HAVE LONG HONORED THE BEST OF SOCIAL MEDIA, THIS COMPETITION INCLUDES EFFORTS MADE BY ORGANIZATIONS TO IMPROVE SUSTAINABILITY AND DIVERSITY INTERNALLY, FOSTER GLOBALLY-MINDED BUSINESS PARTNERSHIPS, AND INCREASE EMPLOYEE COMMUNITY AND CIVIC ENGAGEMENT. THE APOLLO 11 MISSION USHERED IN A NEW ERA IN SPACE EXPLORATION THAT MADE THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION AND THE CURRENT SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH IT CONDUCTS POSSIBLE. IN THE SPIRIT OF THIS HISTORY, AND TO GROW THE JFK LIBRARY'S EDUCATIONAL OFFERINGS, THE JFK LIBRARY FOUNDATION PARTNERED WITH THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION US NATIONAL LABORATORY (ISSNL) TO BRING SPACE-BASED SCIENCE TO SCHOOLS. TOGETHER, THE FOUNDATION AND THE ISSNL CREATED THE JFK SPACE LABS, WHICH WERE DESIGNED TO AUGMENT MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STEM TEACHING AND LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS BY ALLOWING STUDENTS TO CONDUCT SCIENCE EXPERIMENTS THAT ARE DIRECTLY CONNECTED TO THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION. THE EXPERIMENTS IN THE JFK SPACE LABS PROGRAM ARE PROVIDED BY PRIVATE AND PUBLIC SECTOR EDUCATIONAL PARTNERS CURATED BY THE ISSNL.TO INCREASE THE EDUCATIONAL IMPACT AND REACH OF THE PROGRAM, ENSURE EQUITY, AND PROMOTE PRESIDENT KENNEDY'S LEGACY, WE AGREED TO FORMAT THE PROGRAM INTO TWO OPPORTUNITIES. ONE WOULD BE A PROGRAM IN WHICH FIVE SCHOOLS LOCATED ACROSS THE COUNTRY NAMED AFTER PRESIDENT KENNEDY WOULD BE EVALUATED AND CHOSEN TO RECEIVE GRANTS TO BUY EQUIPMENT AND HIGHER COST EXPERIMENTS. THE OTHER OPPORTUNITY IS THE JFK SPACE LABS EXPLORERS PROGRAM THAT IS AVAILABLE TO ANY AND ALL SCHOOLS AND AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAMS AT NO COST, WHICH PROVIDES ACCESS TO THE FREE, HIGH QUALITY EXPERIMENTS.THROUGH THE KEY SPONSOR'S LONGSTANDING CONNECTION TO THE BOYS AND GIRLS CLUBS, THE LIBRARY AND THE SPONSOR WORKED TOGETHER TO CREATE A SPECIAL VERSION OF THE JFK SPACE LABS EXPLORER'S PROGRAM THAT THE CLUBS COULD PROVIDE TO THEIR YOUNG PEOPLE OVER THE SUMMER MONTHS. THIS INAUGURAL PROGRAM INCLUDED SPECIAL OUTREACH, STARTER KITS MAILED TO PARTICIPATING CLUBS, A SURVEY, AND A CONTEST THAT RESULTED IN A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE IN WHICH YOUNG PEOPLE AT THE BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB AT FORT MEADE SPOKE TO ASTRONAUTS ABOARD THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION VIA HAM RADIO.A SNAPSHOT OF THE EDUCATIONAL IMPACT OF THE JFK SPACE LABS INCLUDE, 107 ENTITIES (SCHOOLS, AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS, BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS) ENGAGED IN THE JFK SPACE LABS; 55 BOYS AND GIRLS CLUBS ACROSS THE COUNTRY (INCLUDING HAWAII, ALASKA, AND GUAM) PARTICIPATED IN THE PROGRAM OVER THE SUMMER OF 2019; FIVE SCHOOLS NAMED FOR PRESIDENT KENNEDY IN MASSACHUSETTS, TEXAS, NEW MEXICO, CALIFORNIA, AND COLORADO RECEIVED $5,000 GRANTS TO PURCHASE HIGHER-COST EXPERIMENTS AND EQUIPMENT FOR THEIR JFK SPACE LABS, THERE ARE 12 ORGANIZATIONS PROVIDING ONGOING EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES FOR STUDENTS / YOUTH UTILIZING THE JFK SPACE LABS. THIS RANGES FROM THE URBAN LEAGUE TO THE SALVATION ARMY TO MILITARY BASES AND EMS STATIONS MAKING THIS AVAILABLE TO THE YOUNG PEOPLE IN THEIR CARE; THERE WERE 35 PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SCHOOLS ACROSS THE COUNTRY ENGAGED WITH THE JFK SPACE LABS PROGRAM. ANOTHER EDUCATION-BASED INITIATIVE THAT WAS LAUNCHED TO HIGHLIGHT THE IMPORTANCE OF THE APOLLO 11 MISSION AND PRESIDENT KENNEDY'S CONTRIBUTION TO THE ADVANCEMENT OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY IS THE JFK MOONSHOT UNIVERSITY SYMPOSIA SERIES. THE FOUNDATION APPROACHED SEVERAL OF THE NATION'S TOP RESEARCH UNIVERSITIES TO PROPOSE SYMPOSIA IN WHICH PANELS WOULD EXAMINE HOW THE APOLLO 11 MISSION AND PRESIDENT KENNEDY'S DRIVE TO CREATE THE FIRST MOONSHOT HAVE HAD A PROFOUND IMPACT ON THE "MOONSHOTS" IN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY BEING PURSUED IN UNIVERSITIES TODAY.THE SYMPOSIA FEATURED PANEL DISCUSSIONS AS WELL AS SOME INCORPORATING LOBBY EXHIBITIONS OF SPACE-RELATED STUDENT PROJECTS, BEING PART OF A COLLEGE PRESIDENTIAL INAUGURAL WEEK, AND IN THE CASE OF RICE UNIVERSITY, BEING THE CENTERPIECE OF CELEBRATING THE ANNIVERSARY OF PRESIDENT KENNEDY'S HISTORIC "WE CHOOSE TO GO TO THE MOON" SPEECH GIVEN AT THAT UNIVERSITY. THE AUDIENCES WERE STANDING ROOM ONLY AND WERE MADE UP OF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS, INVITED HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS, AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC.

AWARDS PROGRAMTHE JOHN F. KENNEDY PROFILE IN COURAGE AWARD WAS CREATED IN 1989 TO HONOR PRESIDENT KENNEDY'S COMMITMENT AND CONTRIBUTION TO PUBLIC SERVICE. THE AWARD IS NAMED FOR PRESIDENT KENNEDY'S 1957 PULITZER PRIZE-WINNING BOOK, PROFILES IN COURAGE, WHICH RECOUNTS THE STORIES OF EIGHT U.S. SENATORS WHO RISKED THEIR CAREERS, INCURRING THE WRATH OF CONSTITUENTS OR POWERFUL INTEREST GROUPS, BY TAKING PRINCIPLED STANDS FOR UNPOPULAR POSITIONS. IT HAS BECOME THE PREMIERE AWARD IN THE POLITICAL ARENA. THE PROFILE IN COURAGE AWARD SEEKS TO MAKE AMERICANS AWARE OF THE COURAGEOUS ACTS OF THEIR PUBLIC SERVANTS, AND TO ENCOURAGE RESPECT FOR ELECTED OFFICIALS WHO ACT FOR THE GREATER GOOD BY CHOOSING THE PUBLIC INTEREST OVER PARTISANSHIP.THE PROFILE IN COURAGE AWARD COMMITTEE SELECTED SPEAKER NANCY PELOSI AS THE 2019 PROFILE IN COURAGE AWARD HONOREE. SHE WAS RECOGNIZED FOR PUTTING THE NATIONAL INTEREST ABOVE HER PARTY'S INTEREST TO EXPAND ACCESS TO HEALTH CARE FOR ALL AMERICANS AND THEN, AGAINST A WAVE OF POLITICAL ATTACKS, LEADING THE EFFORT TO RETAKE THE MAJORITY AND ELECT THE MOST DIVERSE CONGRESS IN OUR NATION'S HISTORY. THROUGH A COMPREHENSIVE SOCIAL, EMAIL AND INFLUENCER STRATEGY WE WERE ABLE TO ATTAIN 46,714 NOMINATIONS,(AN INCREASE FROM 40,000 LAST YEAR) TO CONTINUE TO BUILD ON A 6-YEAR SUCCESSFUL EFFORT TO EXPAND PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT WITH THE AWARD. YEAR AFTER YEAR, BOTH WITH AND WITHOUT THE SUPPORT OF CERTAIN TIMELY NOMINATIONS GOING VIRAL, THE FOUNDATION HAS MAINTAINED A SOLID PRESENCE THROUGH THE PROFILE IN COURAGE AWARD AS NATIONAL PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT CAMPAIGN. AMBASSADOR CAROLINE KENNEDY AND JACK SCHLOSSBERG APPEARED IN A FEATURE-LENGTH CBS SUNDAY MORNING SEGMENT. THE SEGMENT HIGHLIGHTED THE 30-YEAR HISTORY OF THE PROFILE IN COURAGE AWARD AND REVEALED THE 2019 WINNER. CBS ALSO INTERVIEWED SPEAKER PELOSI, CINDY MCCAIN, AND MAYOR MITCH LANDRIEU FOR THE PIECE. THE NEW FRONTIER AWARD COMMITTEE MET TO REVIEW A HIGHLY QUALIFIED SELECTION OF 10 NON-ELECTED CANDIDATES AND 10 ELECTED CANDIDATES FOR THE 2019 AWARD. THE COMMITTEE CHOSE REPRESENTATIVES FROM MARCH FOR OUR LIVES FOR THEIR WORK TO GALVANIZE SUPPORT AND DRIVE PUBLIC ADVOCACY FOR SUBSTANTIVE CHANGES TO GUN SAFETY LAWS FOLLOWING THE SHOOTING AT MARJORY STONEMAN DOUGLAS HIGH SCHOOL IN PARKLAND, FLORIDA, AND MAYOR MICHAEL TUBBS OF STOCKTON, CA FOR HIS INNOVATIVE EFFORTS TO INCREASE COLLEGE ENROLLMENT AND GRADUATION RATES, ALLEVIATE POVERTY, AND REDUCE VIOLENCE IN THE CITY. THE RECIPIENTS WERE PRESENTED WITH THEIR AWARDS BY JACK SCHLOSSBERG AND AMBASSADOR CAROLINE KENNEDY AT HARVARD UNIVERSITY'S INSTITUTE OF POLITICS (IOP) ON FEBRUARY 8, 2019. THE CAPACITY AUDIENCE INCLUDED STUDENTS FROM THE IOP'S NATIONAL CAMPAIGN PROGRAM, LEADERS AND MEMBERS OF THE FOUNDATION'S NEW FRONTIER NETWORK, CIVIC AND BUSINESS LEADERS FROM AROUND THE STATE, AND LOCAL PUBLIC OFFICIALS. ELAZAR CRAMER, A SENIOR AT THE MAIMONIDES SCHOOL IN BROOKLINE, MASSACHUSETTS, WON THE 2019 NATIONAL JOHN F. KENNEDY PROFILE IN COURAGE ESSAY CONTEST FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS, WHICH COMES WITH A $10,000 SCHOLARSHIP. THE WINNING ESSAY DESCRIBED THE POLITICAL COURAGE OF EDITH NOURSE ROGERS, A REPUBLICAN US REPRESENTATIVE FROM MASSACHUSETTS WHO BELIEVED IT WAS IMPERATIVE FOR THE UNITED STATES TO RESPOND TO THE HUMANITARIAN CRISIS IN NAZI GERMANY.
