What is the organization's primary exempt purpose? Our vision is to build a DAE that is relevant to members lives, builds power for students, educators, and parents, works for racial and economic justice, and is a meaningful part of the Durham community. Our mission is to unite, empower, and organize educators; to support and nurture our students; and to build and lead collaborative partnerships in the fight to win the schools we all deserve.
Describe the organization’s program service accomplishments for each of its three largest program services, as measured by expenses. In a clear and concise manner, describe the services provided, the number of persons benefited, and other relevant information for each program title.
28 Local Advocacy: We engaged with leadership of our school district to make changes to the SSTAC, the Staff, Student and Teacher Advisory council that meets with district leadership on a monthly basis. We advocated successfully for changes to the districts sick leave policy. We organized a community town hall in May to address issues having to do with remote learning and the impact of COVID on our members and the families that we serve.

29 Professional Development - We offered our annual Summer Leaders trainings to our members. We offered a regular book study group for our members on anti-racist education. We continued to support the professional development offered through the Community Schools Program that we brought to the district as a pilot program, through the work of our Community Schools Coordinator, as well as members who teach at those schools.

30 Individual Member Support - We began the new Beginning Teacher Organizing Project, funded by a grant we received from our parent organizations, North Carolina Association of Educators and National Educators Association. We began a program called State of Custodial Services that is designed to listen to, support and advocate for custodians who we worked to bring back in house as state / district employees last year. We continued to grow our membership base, which is key to gaining more influence for teachers around the school district.

Our work includes a Community Outreach Program that includes participating in community rallies and parades that are primarily organized by other organizations in the city of Durham. For example, we march in the Durham Pride parade each year in order to show support for the LGBTQ community in Durham, and in Durham Public Schools in particular. Our philosophy is that the progress DAE seeks in Durham involves partnerships with other organizations whose work affects the DPS community. We value the support these groups provide for our work, and we are proud to support theirs.

Part I-A, Line 1 - Direct and Indirect Political Campaign Activities DAE advocates for policies that improve public education for students, parents, and communities. DAE sometimes endorses candidates that have a demonstrated commitment to our values and priorities, but does not do so on a partisan basis. In FY20 DAE endorsed Xavier Cason, Jovonia Lewis, and Steve Unruhe for the Durham School Board race. DAE also endorsed Nida Allam, Nimasheena Burns, Brenda Howerton, & Wendy Jacobs for the Durham County Commison race. DAE does not contribute funds to support political candidates. DAE members that wish to participate in political action are encouraged to do so through a separately organized entity called the NCAE PAC, which is managed and operated at a statewide level and which is not controlled by the board of DAE. The NCAE PAC keeps track of the amount of dues contributions that come from DAE members, and DAE has the right to request that up to 1/3rd of that amount be spent on candidates we support in our local elections. That amount is variable, of course, but we currently have the right to request about $2,400 in spending from the NCAE PAC.

Activities Not Previously Reported to the IRS We began a new program called the ""Beginning Teacher Organizing Project. This is a bi-monthly meeting for Beginning Teachers in our district run by two of our members who have a passion for supporting and making sure we retain teachers who are navigating the challenges of the district's Beginning Teacher program. We began a program called State of Custodial Services that is designed to listen to, support and advocate for custodians who we worked to bring back in house as state / district employees last year.
