What is the organization's primary exempt purpose? To act and operate exclusively as a nonprofit corporation pursuant to the laws of the State of Utah, and to act and operate as a charitable organization in lessening the burdens of the government and promoting the public good by: (a) advocating for a more balanced criminal justice system in criminal-law-related lawmaking and policymaking activities (b) providing education on legislative and policy issues to attorneys and other participants in the Utah criminal justice system, (c) engaging in any and all activities and pursuits, and to support or assist such other organizations, as may be reasonably related to the foregoing and following purposes, and (d) engaging in any and all other lawful purposes, activities, and pursuits which are substantially similar to the foregoing and which are or may hereafter be authorized by Section 501(c)4 of the Internal Revenue Code and are consistent with those powers described in the Utah Nonprofit Corporation and Cooperation Association Act.

28 DEFENSE ATTORNEY FOR BALANCED CRIMINAL JUSTICE (DABCJ) AND UTAH JUVENILE DEFENDER RESOURCE CENTER (UJDRC) WORKED EXTENSIVELY ON VARIOUS PIECES OF JUVENILE-FOCUSED AND BROAD CRIMINAL JUSTICE LEGISLATION WITH LEGISLATORS. THE JUVENILE-FOCUSED LEGISLATION INCLUDED ISSUES REGARDING THE MINIMUM AGE OF JUVENILE JURISDICTION, EXTENDING THE AGE OF JURISDICTION IN LIMITED CIRCUMSTANCES, JUVENILE EXPUNGEMENTS, AND LEGISLATION DETERMINING THE CIRCUMSTANCES UNDER WHICH JUVENILES SHOULD BE TRANSFERRED TO THE ADULT SYSTEM. UJDRC RESPONDS TO LEGISLATORS' INQUIRIES REGARDING A YOUTH'S RIGHT TO AN ATTORNEY IN NONDELINQUENCY MATTERS, HARMS OF DETENTION, DISTRACTED DRIVING AND NUMEROUS OTHERS.
