| Form 990, Part III, Line 4a | Overview & Mission Statement The Philadelphia Sketch Club is an educational institution that focuses on the visual arts. Its Mission Statement is as follows: "With over 150 years of artistic heritage, the Philadelphia Sketch Club has a mission to provide a community for visual arts, appreciation of the visual arts and visual arts education." Founded in 1860, it is America's oldest artists club and in addition to its structured educational programs it has served as a meeting place, forum for ideas and a vital bridge between the creators and supporters of the visual arts. Art Workshops As it has in prior years the PSC began the fiscal year starting 6/1/19 by presenting six art workshops each week and continued this practice until COVID-19 required them to go on hold on 3/10/2020 and they remained closed for the rest of the year. Four workshops use a life model, one uses a costumed model and one is a printmaking workshop. The weekly schedules prior to the closing required by COVID-19 were as follows: Life Workshops - Mondays, 6:30 PM to 9:30 PM; Tuesdays, 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM: Wednesdays, 6:30 PM to 9:30 PM; and Saturday, 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM. Costumed Model Workshop - Thursdays, 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM. Printmaking Workshop - Tuesdays, 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Exhibitions - Throughout the year, the PSC would normally hold two new exhibitions each month at its S. Camac Street location. These included juried and invitational exhibitions in our larger second floor gallery and exhibitions for individuals or small groups in our first-floor gallery. The schedule of exhibitions held in the 2019-2020 year was as follows: Second Floor Gallery: PHOTOgraphy 2019 6/3/19 to 6/27/19 2nd Annual Summer Urban Plein Air Event and Exhibition (River to River) 7/6/19 to 7/31/19 Absolutely Abstract Exhibition 8/5/19 to 8/29/19 Gallery closed for renovation in September 2019. 2019 Annual Members' Exhibition - 10/1 to 10/31/19. 11th Annual Phillustration Show - 11/4 to 11/27/19 Legacy Art Show & Sale - 12/1 to 12/26/19 The Annual Domenic DiStefano Memorial 2020 Juried Works on Paper Exhibition - 1/2 to 1/28/20 Annual School District of Philadelphia High School Student Art Show - 2/8 to 2/23/20 - We partner with the School District of Philadelphia to present this exhibition for High School Students which is in its 36th year. The following exhibitions normally held in our Second Floor Gallery were cancelled prior to 5/31/2020 due to COVID-19 2020 Annual Workshops Exhibition. First Floor Gallery: During the year ending 5/31/20, there were eight monthly exhibitions in the first floor Stewart Gallery and these shows were single artists shows, two-artist shows or group shows; and an exhibition of the works for sale in our Annual Gala which was eventually cancelled. From April until the end of May 2020 we showed two historical exhibitions in this gallery; The Diverse Works of Peter Moran and Artworks by Members Who Are Represented in the PSC's Portrait Collection. On-Line Gallery - Each of our major exhibitions being shown in our second floor gallery are also available to be viewed on our website. This increases the exposure of these artworks to people who cannot attend the exhibition. In addition, our On-Line Gallery also includes a separate exhibition of members works as well as works from our art collection. Archives & Library - Our archives and library contain unique information about the PSC and local artists. We answer several inquiries monthly from researchers and have been cited in many published works. Generally these requests come from art gallery or museum personnel who are seeking information on artists they present in their exhibitions, or from graduate-level students who are working on post doctorial papers. Art Collection - We have works from our permanent collection on display to include 44 portraits of members painted by Thomas Anshutz in the 1890s. Several items from our permanent collection are also shown on our website. Other - The Club maintained its normal schedule of having a monthly dinner meeting followed by a speaker on the second Friday of each month. This continued until February 2020 after which it was discontinued due to COVID-19. Other monthly meetings held throughout the year included the Professional Artists Group, Photography Group and Critique Night. These are continuing on an on-line basis. Other efforts include groups of members having plein air painting sessions, our information filled website and our status as a historic site. Activity on our website during the last fully active month of the year included pages reviewed (30,000), visitors (10,000) and unique visits (3,500). |
