| FORM 990, PART III | PAGE 2, PART III, LINE 4A A DIGITIZATION PROJECT IS UNDERWAY TO ELECTRONICALLY CATALOG COLLECTIONS, AND SEGMENTS OF THE COLLECTIONS DATABASE (TOTALING 12,747 OBJECTS) ARE AVAILABLE ON THE MUSEUM'S WEBSITE, WHERE THEY CAN BE ACCESSED BY RESEARCHERS AROUND THE WORLD. CURATORIAL STAFF REGULARLY WORK WITH RESEARCHERS AND COLLEAGUE INSTITUTIONS TO SHARE THE COLLECTIONS. THE MUSEUM'S CURATOR OF HISTORICAL ARCHAEOLOGY IS CURRENTLY COLLABORATING WITH RESEARCHERS FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA, UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND, AND COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON ON AN NSF-FUNDED PROJECT TO STUDY ANIMAL BONE MATERIAL FROM THE CHARLESTON AREA TO ACHIEVE A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF COLONIAL ECONOMIES AND THE IMPACT OF CATTLE RAISING ON THE ENVIRONMENT. THE NATURAL HISTORY DEPARTMENT, MEANWHILE, IS INVOLVED IN A MULTIYEAR EFFORT WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA'S MCKISSICK MUSEUM TO DIGITIZE COLLECTIONS AND RESEARCH NOTES RELATED TO EARLY SOUTH CAROLINA NATURALISTS. PAGE 2, SCHEDULE III, LINE 4B THE MUSEUM'S BUNTING NATURAL HISTORY GALLERY, WHICH OPENED IN 2017, PROVIDES A COMPREHENSIVE OVERVIEW OF AREA NATURAL HISTORY USING FOSSILS, CASTS, ANIMAL MOUNTS, GEOLOGIC EXAMPLES AND BOTANY SPECIMENS FROM THE MUSEUM'S EXTENSIVE COLLECTIONS. A MAJOR HIGHLIGHT OF THE GALLERY IS A FULL SKELETON OF PELAGORNIS SANDERSI, THE WORLD'S LARGEST KNOWN FLYING BIRD TO HAVE EVER EXISTED, CAST FROM THE ORIGINAL FOSSILS IN THE MUSEUM'S COLLECTIONS. IN 2018-2019, THE MUSEUM RENOVATED ITS RICE CULTURE, REVOLUTIONARY WAR, ANTEBELLUM AND CIVIL WAR EXHIBITS TO INCORPORATE THE MOST RECENT RESEARCH, PROVIDE A MORE INCLUSIVE INTERPRETATION, AND BETTER PRESENT KEY ARTIFACTS. PLANS ARE UNDERWAY TO CONTINUE THE STORY OF AREA HISTORY THROUGH THE 20TH CENTURY. LIKE OTHER MUSEUMS AROUND THE COUNTRY, THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC HAD SERIOUS IMPACT ON THE MUSEUM DURING 2020. THE MUSEUM WAS CLOSED FROM MARCH 19 TO MAY 29 DUE TO LOCAL AND STATE MANDATES AND VISITATION FOR THE YEAR WAS DOWN 55% COMPARED TO 2019. STILL, MUSEUM SITES WELCOMED 51,530 GUESTS DURING 2020. PAGE 2, PART III, LINE 4C PROGRAMS ARE DESIGNED TO MEET SOUTH CAROLINA CURRICULUM STANDARDS FOR SOCIAL STUDIES AND SCIENCE, AND THE MUSEUM HAS DEVELOPED PARTNERSHIPS WITH LOCAL SCHOOLS AND NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS THAT SUPPORT THEM TO DEVELOP SPECIALIZED PROGRAMMING. ON-SITE SCHOOL PROGRAMS WERE ALSO SERIOUSLY AFFECTED BY THE PANDEMIC IN 2020. MUSEUM EDUCATORS DEFTLY PIVOTED TO VIRTUAL PROGRAMS, HOWEVER, AND WORKED CLOSELY WITH LOCAL SCHOOL DISTRICTS AND NON-PROFIT FUNDING AGENCIES TO DEVELOP SUMMER CAMP, AFTER SCHOOL, AND IN-CLASS LEARNING PROGRAMS THAT COULD BE PRESENTED VIRTUALLY. MUSEUM EDUCATORS HAVE ROUTINELY PROVIDED WEEKLY ON-SITE PROGRAMMING TO LOCAL TITLE I SCHOOLS IN THE PAST, BUT, UNABLE TO PHYSICALLY VISIT SCHOOLS, THEY CREATED APPROPRIATE VIRTUAL PROGRAMMING TO MEET THE NEEDS OF THESE SCHOOLS. EDUCATION DEPARTMENT STAFF HAVE DEVELOPED A "BRAGG BOX" PROGRAM, NAMED FOR THE MUSEUM'S FIRST FEMALE DIRECTOR WHO INITIATED A SIMILAR PROGRAM, WHICH ARE KITS CONTAINING ARTIFACT REPLICAS, ACTIVITIES AND LESSON PLANS THAT CAN BE SENT TO SCHOOLS TO BRING THE MUSEUM EXPERIENCE TO THEM. ALTHOUGH FEWER BRAGG BOXES WERE DISTRIBUTED IN 2020 DUE TO THE PANDEMIC, THE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT EXPECTS THIS PROGRAM TO RESUME NORMAL LEVELS OF ACTIVITY DURING THE 2021-2022 SCHOOL YEAR. THE DEPARTMENT ALSO PRESENTS EDUCATIONAL SUMMER CAMPS, PROGRAMS FOR HOME SCHOOLERS, AND FAMILY EVENTS FOR PARENTS TO ENJOY WITH THEIR CHILDREN. ADULT PROGRAMS INCLUDE TEACHER RECERTIFICATION TRAINING, AND PUBLIC LECTURES, WORKSHOPS, AND SPECIALIZED TOURS AND WALKS. MANY OF THESE TAKE PLACE AT THE DILL SANCTUARY. THE MUSEUM IS UNDERTAKING A STRATEGIC PLAN TO MAKE THIS PROPERTY, RICH IN NATURAL AND HISTORIC FEATURES, MORE ACCESSIBLE TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC IN THE COMING YEARS. AMONG ACCOMPLISHMENTS THERE IN 2020 WAS THE INSTALLATION OF A PROTECTIVE STONE REVETMENT ON THE FACE OF FORT PRINGLE, A SIGNIFICANT CIVIL WAR FORTIFICATION ON THE STONO RIVER WHICH HAS BEEN SUBJECT TO EROSION FROM THE TIDES. THE MUSEUM SECURED A 250,000 GRANT FROM THE NATIONAL PARK SERVICE TO COVER THE BULK OF THE PROJECT COST. |
| FORM 990, PAGE 6, PART VI, LINE 11B | THE FORM 990 IS PREPARED BY THE MUSEUM'S INDEPENDENT CPA FIRM, THEN REVIEWED BY THE DIRECTOR, A CPA.
