| Part I Question 1, Part III Question 1, Part III Question 3 | OVERVIEW The American Museum of Natural History ("AMNHthe "Museum") is one of the largest and most complex natural history museums in the world. It is a diverse scientific, educational and cultural organization that includes a research enterprise of approximately 175 full time scientists; the Richard Gilder Graduate School, which confers the Ph.D. in Comparative Biology and the Master of Arts in Teaching, the only such free-standing degree granting programs in any museum in the U.S., collections of more than 34 million specimens and artifacts that constitute an invaluable record of life on Earth; one of the largest natural history libraries in the world, over 40 permanent exhibition halls, special exhibition galleries which display award-winning exhibitions, as well as the Rose Center for Earth and Space, which houses the world-renowned Hayden Planetarium where planetarium shows are shown. The Museum also has a major digital enterprise and online presence, and typically distributes its scientific and educational content, special exhibitions and planetarium shows to venues in approximately 20 countries. The Museum was founded as a nonprofit corporation in 1869 by a special act of the Legislature of the State of New York and is chartered as an educational institution with its scientific research, educational programs and exhibitions under the auspices of the Board of Regents of the State of New York. AMNH's mission, which reflects a close integration of science and education, is "to discover, interpret and disseminate -- through scientific research and education - knowledge about human cultures, the natural world, and the universe." The Museum is located on approximately 18 acres in Theodore Roosevelt Park across from Central Park in the borough of Manhattan in New York City, the largest city in the United States with a diverse population of 8.4 million and the highest tourism of any city in the United States pre-COVID, with approximately 66.6 million foreign and domestic tourists in CY2019. The areas of the Museum open to the public include over 40 permanent exhibition halls and its special exhibition galleries, the Rose Center for Earth and Space including the Hayden Planetarium, theaters for symposia and public programs, and the library. Other parts of the premises house research laboratories, collections, classrooms, administrative offices, and the Richard Gilder Graduate School. AMNH is publicly supported with operating and capital funds from the City of New York and by grants from the City, State, and Federal governments. Additional support comes from individual donations, grants from foundations and corporations, as well as admissions revenue, endowment yield, and ancillary activities. Fiscal Year 2020 was marked by the onset of the COVID-19 global pandemic. COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by the recently discovered novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. The first confirmed case of COVID-19 in the United States occurred in January of 2020. The first laboratory-confirmed case of COVID-19 in New York City occurred on February 29, 2020 and it quickly became evident there was community spread of the coronavirus throughout the City. On March 7, 2020, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo declared a disaster emergency in the State of New York. Within that week, the World Health Organization categorized the COVID-19 outbreak as a pandemic, Governor Cuomo prohibited gatherings of 500 persons or more and Mayor Bill de Blasio declared a state of emergency in the City of New York, subsequently ordering closures of public venues throughout New York City including museums, theaters, and performance spaces. Following governmental directives, on March 13, the Museum closed to public visitation and, other than critical onsite personnel to ensure the safety of the campus, transitioned to remote workforce in a move unprecedented in its 150-year history. Notwithstanding the pandemic, construction of the new Richard Gilder Center for Science, Education, and Innovation (the "Gilder Center") which began in June 2019, is ongoing. The project includes a five-story, approximately 190,000-gross-square-foot addition, approximately 40,000 gross square feet of renovations to existing space, and alterations to an approximately 75,000-square-foot adjacent area of Theodore Roosevelt Park. The Gilder Center will include new exhibition and learning spaces with state-of-the-art technology and the Museum's world-class collections, expanding access to a broader range of the Museum's resources for students, teachers, and families, offering new learning opportunities, and inviting all visitors to share in the excitement of discovery. Under normal circumstances, the Museum is open to the public 363 days a year, and admission to the permanent halls and the Rose Center for Earth and Space is on a "suggested" basis. Due to the COVID-19 global pandemic, however, the Museum closed to the public from March 13, 2020 through the end of the fiscal year (and into FY21 as well) in accordance with directives issued by New York State and local authorities. Upon reopening in September 2020, the Museum implemented a new pricing structure for the permanent halls and Rose Center for Earth and Space, which preserved suggested admission for residents of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, and set a fixed admission rate for non-residents of those three states. The Museum's overall attendance in FY20 prior to the closure was approximately 3.2 million visitors. RESEARCH AMNH scientific research is carried out with a full-time scientific staff of approximately 200 who work in the biological sciences, paleontology, astrophysics, earth and planetary sciences, and anthropology. AMNH scientists typically, in pre-COVID times, conduct more than 100 expeditions each year around the world and publish their research in peer-reviewed journals at the rate of about 450 publications in FY 2020. The science effort is led currently by 37 tenured or tenure track curators whose research publications have attracted over 200,000 citations. Senior curators have an average citation index (H-index) of 45, regarded as an indication of "outstanding" impact characteristic of only top research institutions. Research facilities utilized by AMNH include the Museum's collections, a natural history library and state-of-the-art laboratories as well as other research facilities off site which are available through university consortia in which AMNH participates. AMNH also owns over 100 acres in the Chiricahua Mountains in Southeastern Arizona with research laboratories and temporary housing for researchers, as well as the 17-acre Great Gull Island, a conservation area located at the eastern end of Long Island Sound in New York State. The work of scientists at the Museum is partially funded by federal agencies including the National Science Foundation, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the National Institutes of Health. AMNH's cross-disciplinary research centers include an institute for comparative genomics ("the Institute"), which advances basic research in molecular biology. The Institute includes a number of science facilities including three genomics laboratories; the Monell Collection for Molecular and Microbial Research (a frozen tissue repository of DNA and tissue specimens); and a parallel computing facility. It also supports the Museum's comparative genomics research program and education laboratory. The genomics research programs are complemented by the efforts of Museum scientists in phenomics research- the investigation of cell and tissue structure, anatomy, physiology and other complex features of organisms and species that are influenced by genes. Thus, the Museum's research mission in comparative biology embraces both genomics and phenomics. Research programs in comparative biology are complemented by educational programs and facilities, including an Education Laboratory, that help convey the critical scientific concepts to diverse audiences. Another research program is the Center for Biodiversity and Conservation (CBC), which surveys and studies biological diversity, provides educational and training programs and strives to mitigate threats to the Earth's ecosystems. CBC's projects in the Bahamas, the Solomon Islands, British Colombia, Bolivia, Argentina, and Vietnam, integrate multidisciplinary research and the Museum's collections and technology for training and collaborative problem solving. CBC is also working to develop tools to support the professionalization of the global protected area workforce and to incorporate indigenous and local knowledge into biodiversity assessments. |
| Part I Question 1, Part III Question 1, Part III Question 3 (Continued) | In the Fall of 2018, the Museum entered into a collaboration with the Flatiron Institute Center for Computational Astrophysics (CCA). Two of the Museum's astrophysics curators are now jointly supported by this program. The CCA fosters the work of a large team of computational astrophysicists and provides the high -performance computing facility for the big data analyses required in this field. In mid-March of 2020 the Museum closed to all but essential staff due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with only essential scientific staff allowed on site. Nonetheless, much research was carried out remotely, and scientists were active in analyzing data, publishing papers, and submitting grant proposals. In June of 2020, a select number of scientists and students were allowed back into the labs in order to complete time sensitive projects. The summer's National Science Foundation (NSF)-sponsored Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program this year was carried out entirely remotely for the first time. COLLECTIONS and LIBRARY The Museum's collections number over 34 million specimens and artifacts and are among the largest and most comprehensive in the world. The collections constitute an invaluable record of life on Earth and are maintained to facilitate the study and understanding of 4.5 billion years of change in Earth's geology, climate, and the 3.5-billion-year history of its habitats and life forms. The collections typically, in pre-pandemic times, increase by between twenty-five and seventy-five thousand specimens and artifacts each year. New collections and facilities include the Museum's frozen tissue collection of DNA with more than one hundred twenty thousand tissue samples that form a repository for research at AMNH and other institutions, often including specimens deposited by researchers under permit from the National Park Service. Other new forms of collections include large scientific digital databases of genomic and astrophysical data. The collections and research assets are enriched by continued exploration of such diverse areas as Mongolia, Kenya, British Columbia, Argentina, South Africa, Guatemala, Congo, Costa Rica, China, Belize, Bahamas, Arctic islands, Antarctica, Vanuatu, Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, India, Chile, Brazil, French Guiana, Columbia, Peru, Australia, Indonesia, New Guinea, Romania, and many others. The restrictions posed by the COVID pandemic curtailed field expeditions for the last four months of FY 20, and the annual number of specimens collected was lower than usual. AMNH provides research material to other institutions, typically lending tens of thousands of specimens each year and with outstanding loans of hundreds of thousands of specimens at any given time. Its collections are also made available for study on site to research scientists and students. Due to the Museum shutdown in March through June, the annual number of research visitors to the collections was less than the 1,200 visiting researchers in FY 2020. The Library of the American Museum of Natural History was established in 1869 with the founding of the Museum. Since that time, the Library has grown into one of the largest natural history libraries in the world, with a collection that is rich in retrospective materials, some going back to the 15th century. The Library's holdings comprise a research collection with topics that span the full range of the natural sciences, special collections (which consist of archival material relating to the history of the Museum, its scientists and staff, scientific expeditions and research, Museum exhibitions and educational offerings), and digital collections. It also includes an astronomy collection, which consists of over 8,000 volumes, 55 journal titles, over 10,000 photographs, and archives dating back to 1934, one year before the opening of the original Hayden Planetarium. This year the Library received a major grant for digitization of its extensive archive. The Library's primary function is to serve and support the work of the Museum's scientific staff; however, it also serves local students, faculty, researchers, and the general public, as well as scholars nationally and internationally. EDUCATION THE RICHARD GILDER GRADUATE SCHOOL ("RGGSthe "GRADUATE SCHOOL") is accredited by the New York State Board of Regents and confers the degrees of Doctor of PHILOSOPHY ("PH.D.") IN COMPARATIVE BIOLOGY AND MASTER OF ARTS in Teaching (MAT), the first and only museum in the United States authorized to do so. The Graduate School's students publish papers in leading academic journals during their enrollment or based on work from their studies at the Graduate School. RGGS students continue to be highly successful in securing distinguished grants, awards, and post-graduate positions. To date, RGGS has produced 35 Ph.D. graduates in Comparative Biology, most of whom work in science, academic, educational, and museum fields, including at the National Science Foundation, the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, Royal Ontario Museum, and the University of Edinburgh. The four (4) FY2020 doctoral graduates have a wide range of research specializations, from the molecular ecology and gut biome of bats to the phylogeography of avian diversification in the tropics. Ten years ago, the New York State Board of Regents selected AMNH to pilot a Master of Arts in Teaching program for K-12 science teachers with conferral of the degree by the Board of Regents, the first freestanding master's degree program offered by a U.S. museum to prepare science teachers. The Regents' pilot program was completed in August 2016, and the Regents approved an amendment of the AMNH charter authorizing AMNH itself to confer the degree of Master of Arts in Teaching. As noted above, the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program now resides in the Graduate School along with the Ph.D. program. Now in its ninth year, the innovative program has received full accreditation and enjoys a nearly 100 percent job placement rate. As of the close of FY20, 109 graduates were teaching more than 10,000 students, mainly in high-needs schools in New York. Teacher retention exceeds national averages, particularly for those teaching in high-needs schools. To further advance training of the next generation of scientists, RGGS also conducts a doctoral training program in collaboration with four universities: Cornell, Columbia, New York University, and the City University of New York, and maintains an active post-doctoral program. It also offers an undergraduate training program, which provides a select group of undergraduate students with intensive research experience in such subjects as evolutionary biology, earth and planetary sciences, and astrophysics. For K-12 teachers, the Museum has extensive professional development programs that trained more than 4,500 educators in Fiscal Year 2020 through a varied array of onsite and online offerings that are aligned with current curricular standards and designed to familiarize educators with rigorous scientific content, effective teaching practices, and the Museum's own rich resources. Many of the programs offered to teachers are graduate credit bearing, furthering pursuit of advanced degrees in science education through the City University of New York and other universities. While onsite programming had to be suspended when the museum closed to the public in March 2020, the Museum's educators continued to deliver key programs remotely wherever possible, and were well positioned to pivot to online learning in large part because of the strength of existing online programs, including Seminars on Science, OLogy, and courses offered on Coursera. -Seminars on Science is the Museum's flagship online education program for K-12 teachers, offering graduate level, credit bearing online courses in Earth science, life, and physical sciences. In FY20, Seminars on Science garnered record enrollment of 1,834 students over six sessions; during the Spring 2020 session alone, enrollments increased by 34%. -Through the Coursera platform, the Museum offers free Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCs) designed for both educators and general audiences. The Museum's offerings on Coursera garnered 16,910 visitors in March 2020, compared to 6,315 the previous month. |
| Part I Question 1, Part III Question 1,Part III Question 3 (Continued) | -OLogy, the Museum's award-winning science website for children, garnered 2.3 million visits, an increase of 45% over last year-indicating a heightened need for high-quality science resources for parents and teachers to use with children at home. In June 2020, in response to this need, the Museum launched the first OLogy iPad app, encompassing more than 30 educational games, videos, and articles covering scientific fields from archaeology to zoology. It can also be used offline, making it an important resource for children without reliable internet access. In the app's first two months, it was downloaded nearly 50,000 times. Even upon reopening, the Museum plans to maintain a significant level of online programming, taking advantage of remote learning's unique appeal, accessibility, and reach. Prior to its closure to the public, in FY20, nearly 200,000 students and teachers visited the Museum as part of organized school or camp groups, and many participate in the Museum's after-school programs. In May 2020, the Museum launched Virtual Field Trips-a new educational initiative allowing learners to explore the Museum's most iconic and well-loved galleries from home. These offerings are customizable and include grade-appropriate and standards-aligned downloadable worksheets, activities, and lab experiences for students, all designed to continue to support Museum-based science education in a remote context. Among the Museum's signature education programs for middle school students is the Urban Advantage initiative, which is now in its 17th year. Urban Advantage is a middle school science enrichment program developed by the Museum with the NYC Department of Education and operated by the Museum and seven other science institutions of New York City. In FY20, Urban Advantage served a record of 92,650 middle school students and 863 teachers - including 663 continuing teachers - in 287 middle schools across all five boroughs across New York City. Urban Advantage has also expanded into elementary schools, and reached an additional 5,375 students in grades 3-5 in Fiscal Year 2020. Each year, the Museum's Science and Research Mentoring Program (SRMP) provides 60 under-resourced high school students with a year of focused training in science practices and laboratory skills, as well as the invaluable opportunity to pursue research projects under the mentorship of a Museum scientist. Since its launch in 2009, 735 students have graduated from the program, many of whom have gone on to pursue science in college and in their careers. In March 2020, the Museum worked quickly to change the format of SRMP due to the COVID-19 crisis, transitioning to a fully virtual setting by utilizing Zoom and creating multiple online forums where students could connect with staff, mentors, alumni and each other so that research could continue. The Museum also leads the New York City Science Research Mentoring Consortium, in collaboration with local cultural institutions, museums, universities, and hospitals committed to providing mentored research experiences across the city. The Consortium now includes 23 partner sites--including the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory at Columbia University, the NOAA Center for Remote Sensing and Earth Systems (CREST) at City College, and Wave Hill. In June 2020, the Museum hosted the 7th Annual Student Research Colloquium online; 114 students from six Consortium partners presented their research and conducted live Q&A sessions with attendees and other students. The Museum also produces and distributes curricula, lesson plans, and resource materials for classroom use, as well as for use in libraries and community organizations, to support science teaching and learning in New York City. These materials are widely available online to communities throughout the State of New York, the U.S., and the world, through the Museum's continued investment in digital media. The Museum further extends the reach of its educational programs through after-hours public programs, including the monthly SciCaf series, which features popular presentations by Museum curators, and the annual Isaac Asimov Debate. The Museum also convenes international conferences and convenings on scientific, environmental, cultural, and educational topics, including the annual Margaret Mead Film Festival, the longest running showcase for international documentary films in anthropology. EXHIBITION The Museum creates and mounts its award-winning exhibitions, science video bulletin displays, and planetarium shows for display at AMNH and distribution to museums, science centers, and planetaria in numerous venues in approximately 20 countries. The Nature of Color, an exhibition that explores the many ways that color informs and enriches our lives, opened on March 9, 2020, just prior to the Museum's public closure resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. Colors convey information about the natural world, including what objects are made of and whether they are edible or poisonous. Plants and animals use color to conceal themselves-as well as to reveal themselves, facilitate pollination, warn off predators and reproduce. Humans have encoded colors with countless cultural meanings, signifying mourning and marriage, gender and marital status, the sultry or sacred, group affiliation and political allegiance. Through cultural objects, media and hands-on interactives, visitors connect with color through experimentation and play. In addition to learning what color is, and how color vision works, visitors engage in entertaining activities such as dancing with colored shadows, mixing and separating different colors of light, choosing their favorite colors and comparing their answers to others', and playing with color on a large interactive scale. The Nature of Color replaced the exhibition Unseen Oceans(description below) when Unseen Oceans completed its run August 18, 2019. T. rex: The Ultimate Predator, which opened March of 2019, continued its run in FY20, providing an exhibition that explores the iconic Tyrannosaurus rex and other members of this large, ancient and fearsome family. Many early tyrannosaurs in the Jurassic were little bigger than a wolf. Only in the late Cretaceous did tyrannosaurs such as T. rex become one of the largest, most fearsome predators on Earth. This exhibition allows visitors to examine the adaptations that helped these super-predators achieve global dominance. T. rex: The Ultimate Predator introduces visitors to the entire tyrannosaur superfamily and reveals the amazing story of the most iconic dinosaur in the world through stunning life-sized models, fossils and casts, and engaging interactives. SANIGHTAAQ: Yupik Ceremonial Gut Parka was a small exhibition that the Exhibition Department worked with students from the Columbia University Graduate Program in Museum Anthropology and the AMNH Anthropology Department to install. The case displaying the Yupik Ceremonial Gut Parka highlights new research and conservation of this important object. This special exhibition was open June 29, 2019 - September 3, 2019. Addressing the Statue opened July 16, 2019 and focused on the bronze sculpture of Theodore Roosevelt mounted on a horse with an African and a Native American on foot beside him. Although the sculptor James Fraser's express intention in creating the statue was to symbolize Roosevelt's wide-ranging interests in the exploration of the African and American continents, the statue itself communicates a racial hierarchy that the Museum and members of the public have long found disturbing.. The Museum re-contextualized the statue by adding new outdoor signage and this indoor text-and-photo exhibition, accompanied by a video provides a wide variety of perspectives on the statue and what it means today. The Butterfly Conservatory: Butterflies Alive in Winter (Fall 2019 through Spring 2020) is an annual exhibition that features up to 500 live, free-flying tropical butterflies from the Americas, Africa and Asia. The butterflies are housed in a vivarium that approximates their natural habitat, includes live flowering plants that serve as nectar sources and features controlled artificial light, temperature and humidity. Featured species include iridescent blue morpho butterflies, striking scarlet swallowtails and large owl butterflies. Text panels located immediately outside the vivarium offer information about the evolution and life cycle of butterflies, including explanations of mimicry, diversity and butterflies' important role in conservation. It highlights the country's vibrant culture as well as its extraordinary biodiversity across its remote forests, mysterious caves, expansive wetlands and dazzling reefs. -Life at the Limits reveals a glimpse of the breathtaking diversity of the natural world and the power of natural selection to shape exceptional responses to the challenges, and opportunities, of life on Earth. -Pterosaurs: Flight in the Age of Dinosaurs explores the ancient, winged reptiles known as pterosaurs and what incredible new discoveries are revealing about this extraordinary group of animals. -The Power of Poison explores poison's roles in nature, myth, and human health-as a defense against predators, a source of strength, or a lethal weapon-turned-lifesaving treatment. -Our Global Kitchen: Food, Nature, Culture focuses on the complex and intricate food system that brings what we eat from farm to fork and illuminates the myriad ways in which food is produced and consumed throughout the world. -Beyond Planet Earth: The Future of Space Exploration transports visitors to the moon, asteroids, Mars, and beyond through fully immersive environments, models, and engaging interactives. It allows visitors to find out what experts think the future will hold for us beyond planet Earth. -Creatures of Light: Nature's Bioluminescence takes visitors to such fascinating places as the far depths of the ocean, explains why and how certain animals create "living light", and helps us all better understand the vast and glorious ecosystem of which we are a part. -World's Largest Dinosaurs reveals how a uniquely super-sized group of dinosaurs - the long-necked and long-tailed sauropods - lived, breathed, ate, moved, and survived by illuminating how size and scale related to basic biological functions. -Brain: The Inside Story provides visitors with the latest information in neuroscience, highlighting the brain's surprising ability to rewire itself in response to experience, disability, or trauma. It also showcases new technologies that researchers use to study the brain and treat conditions such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. -Race to the End of the Earth focuses on the unique challenges that confronted two competing explorers, Norwegian Roald Amundsen and Captain Robert Falcon Scott of the British Royal Navy, as they undertook their 1,800-mile journeys from the edge of the Ross Ice Shelf to the South Pole and back in 1911-1912. The exhibition also examines the legacy of the heroic age of Antarctic exploration by linking these expeditions with past and present research on this unique continent. -Traveling the Silk Road: Ancient Pathway to the Modern World brings to life the most celebrated trade route in human history through evocative sights, sounds, and artifacts. Visitors embark on an unparalleled journey exploring commerce, communication, and cultural exchange in cities and empires of central and west Asia from 600 to 1200. -Countdown to Zero: Defeating Disease focuses on the efforts to achieve eradication of Guinea worm disease and other global afflictions. Created in collaboration with The Carter Center, Countdown to Zero uses photographs, artifacts and video to tell the story of the steep reduction of Guinea worm disease over the past 30 years. This parasitic infection is caused by a roundworm found in stagnant drinking water. The exhibition also explores the ongoing efforts to eliminate illnesses including river blindness, lymphatic filariasis, polio and malaria. -Darwin presents an extensive and in-depth array of material related to Charles Darwin's life and contributions to science, including a copy of his seminal work, The Origin of Species. -Dinosaur Discoveries: Ancient Fossils, New Ideas is an adapted, small-scale (1,500 sq. ft.) version of the Museum's full-scale exhibition Dinosaurs, Ancient Fossils, New Discoveries, suitable for travel to venues with smaller exhibition galleries and budgets. -Opulent Oceans was inspired by the book Opulent Oceans: Extraordinary Rare Book Selections from the American Museum of Natural History Library, by Dr. Melanie L.J. Stiassny, the Axelrod Research Curator and Curator in the Department of Ichthyology. The exhibition includes 46 striking, large-format reproductions from 32 rare and beautifully illustrated scientific works from the Museum's Library. -Picturing Science: Museum Scientists and Imaging Technologies is an exhibition with more than 20 sets of images are displayed in large format, giving visitors a sense of the wide range of research topics under investigation at AMNH as well as the various optical tools in use here. -Natural Histories was inspired by the book Natural Histories: Extraordinary Rare Book Selections from the American Museum of Natural History Library, published in October 2012, by Thomas Baione, Harold Boeschenstein Director, Department of Library Services. This exhibition includes 50 striking, large-format reproductions from more than 25 rare and beautifully illustrated scientific works from the Museum Library's Rare Book collection. DIGITAL MEDIA/COMMUNICATIONS The Museum maintains a dynamic digital media presence, anchored by the amnh.org website, which offers online ticketing and visitor information; extensive coverage of and resources for the Museum's permanent and temporary exhibitions; information about the Museum's educational offerings, including onsite programs for students beginning in pre-school through graduate school, and resources and professional development for teachers; information about the Museum's research programs and collections; and more. As the global COVID-19 pandemic required a closure of the Museum's physical buildings to the public beginning in March 2020, the Museum's digital offerings became one of the main ways of sharing the Museum's resources and programs, with a 9% increase in traffic, year-over-year, in the last quarter of FY20. Beginning in March 2020, the amnh.org website was updated to provide a hub for new and evergreen content, with key pages such as amnh.org/explore optimized to surface a variety of offerings, including resources for parents of school-aged children, for educators, and for the general public looking to virtually "visit" the Museum during a period of shutdown through tours, videos, and other digital resources. Page views for amnh.org/explore saw a 1,100% year-over-year increase in March and April 2020. The Museum also continued to leverage its robust social media platforms, including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube, to engage directly with the public at a time when movement and access to cultural institutions were greatly restricted. Daily social media highlighted Museum resources and exhibits, and beginning in late March 2020, the Museum began offering weekly programs on its Facebook and YouTube channels, including programming about space featuring live narrated "space flights" using the Open Space visualization software; programs hosted by Museum scientists that included live q-and-a sessions with viewers; and a series of special online festivals, including EarthFest in April , SpaceFest in May, and a two-part series about COVID-19 in June (origins, spread, and impact) and July (vaccines). From April through June, approximately 30 online programs received nearly 70,000 views during live broadcasts. In March and April, the Museum's OLogy science website for kids experienced a 76% increase in traffic, indicating a need for high-quality online science resources as many schools were transitioning to remote learning. In response, the Museum developed and released the free OLogy app for iPad in June, featuring more than 35 interactive educational modules, which can be used offline, making it more accessible to students without reliable internet access. The app was downloaded more than 45,000 times in its first month. In addition, the Museum launched a web page dedicated to the science of COVID-19, with a series of explainers about viruses, including the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19, and pandemics. |
