| FORM 990, PART III - PROGRAM SERVICE, LINE 4A | THE DRAWING CENTER, A MUSEUM IN MANHATTAN'S SOHO DISTRICT, EXPLORES THE MEDIUM OF DRAWING AS PRIMARY, DYNAMIC, AND RELEVANT TO CONTEMPORARY CULTURE, THE FUTURE OF ART, AND CREATIVE THOUGHT. ITS ACTIVITES-WHICH ARE BOTH MULTI-DISCIPLINARY AND BROADLY HISTORICAL-INCLUDE EXHIBITIONS; SITE-SPECIFIC INSTALLATIONS; A MENTORING PROGRAM FOR EMERGING ARTISTS THAT CONSISTS OF STUDIO VISITS AND INVITATIONS TO PRESENT WORK AT THE DRAWING CENTER; THE "DRAWING PAPERS" PUBLICATION SERIES; PUBLIC PROGRAMS; AND EDUCATIONAL INITIATIVES FOR SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY GROUPS. IT WAS FOUNDED IN 1977 BY CURATOR MARTHA BECK (1938-2014). THE IMPACT ON THE MEDIUM THAT THE DRAWING CENTER HAS HAD OVER THE PAST 40 YEARS IS CLEAR. DRAWING HAS TAKEN ITS PLACE AS A CENTRAL AND RESPECTED ART FORM, WITH INSTITUTIONS AND GALLERIES ACROSS THE GLOBE. IT IS THE SUBJECT OF MAJOR EXHIBITIONS THAT CONFIRM ITS ARTISTIC IMPORTANCE AND COMMERCIAL VIABILITY. THIS SHIFT IN THE FIELD HAS ALLOWED THE DRAWING CENTER TO RETHINK ITS MISSION, MOVING AWAY FROM A MORE DEFENSIVE STANCE ABOUT DRAWING-THAT IT IS LEGITIMATE, IMPORTANT, AND VALUABLE-TO A MORE EXPANSIVE AND POSITIVE EXPLORATION OF HOW DRAWING OPERATES IN CONTEMPORARY CULTURE. THIS NEW INSTITUTIONAL APPROACH HAS BEEN POPULAR WITH GENERAL AUDIENCES AND THE FIELD IN GENERAL, AND THE DRAWING CENTER IS SEEING INCREASED ANNUAL ATTENDANCE FIGURES AS WELL AS THE DEVELOPMENT OF A BROADER BASE OF SUPPORTERS. EVERY YEAR, THE DRAWING CENTER SERVES 20,000+ INDIVIDUALS BOTH ON-SITE AND THROUGH OFF-SITE DRAWING WORKSHOPS. AS A MUSEUM THAT DOES NOT MAINTAIN A COLLECTION, THE MAIN FOCUS OF THE DRAWING CENTER'S PROGRAMMATIC ACTIVITY IS TEMPORARY EXHIBITIONS AND LONGER-TERM SITE-SPECIFIC INSTALLATIONS. THE MUSEUM MOUNTS 3 TO 6 EXHIBITIONS OR INSTALLATIONS ANNUALLY ACROSS ITS THREE GALLERY SPACES MAIN GALLERY; DRAWING ROOM; DOWNSTAIRS GALLERY AND ONE INSTALLATION SITE- LOCATED IN OUR STAIRWELL. OFTEN, THESE EXHIBITIONS TRAVEL ON TO DIFFERENT NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL VENUES, WITH 15 EXHIBITIONS TRAVELING TO MORE THAN 26 MUSEUMS SINCE 2007. DURING THE 2019-2020 EXHIBITION SEASON, THE DRAWING CENTER HOSTED SEVEN EXHIBITIONS IN ITS VARIOUS GALLERIES, INCLUDING "THE PENCIL IS A KEY - DRAWINGS BY INCARCERATED ARTISTS, A GROUP EXHIBITION FEATURING MORE THAN 200 WORKS FROM AROUND THE GLOBE AND ACROSS 200 YEARS OF HISTORY. IN THE SUMMER, THE DRAWING CENTER PRESENTED TWO EXHIBITIONS AROUND ITS EMERGING ARTISTS VIEWING PROGRAM. IN THE FALL, THE DRAWING CENTER HOSTED THE PENCIL IS A KEY: DRAWINGS BY INCARCERATED ARTISTS IN ITS MAIN GALLERY. THE PENCIL IS A KEY IS AN EXHIBITION OF HISTORICAL AND CONTEMPORARY DRAWINGS BY INCARCERATED PEOPLE FROM ALL OVER THE GLOBE. WORKS BY ARTISTS WHO WERE OR CURRENTLY ARE PRISONERS ARE JUXTAPOSED WITH DRAWINGS BY PRISONERS WHO BECAME ARTISTS WHILE INCARCERATED. CREATED IN EXTREME CIRCUMSTANCES, THE DRAWINGS IN THIS SHOW ARE WEAPONS IN THE FIGHT FOR JUSTICE, RECORDS THAT BEAR WITNESS TO TERRIBLE CIRCUMSTANCES, CONTAINERS OF MEMORY, AND PORTALS TO A BETTER FUTURE. THE PENCIL IS A KEY WAS ACCOMPANIED BY A FULLY ILLUSTRATED EXHIBITION CATALOG. IN JANUARY, 2020, THE DRAWING CENTER COLLABORATED WITH THE ARTIST LAURIE JO REYNOLDS, AN ARTIST AND ARTISTS POLICY ADVOCATE, AND THE CHICAGO 400, A GRASSROOTS CAMPAIGN OF FORMERLY INCARCERATED AND CONVICTED PEOPLE EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS IN CHICAGO. THE TWO-WEEK PRESENTATION FEATURED HAND-DRAWN DIAGRAMS AND MAPS THAT DEPICT THE LOGISTICS OF CARRYING OUT REGISTRATION LAWS, AS WELL AS WORKSHOPS AND PUBLIC PROGRAMMING. THE PRESENTATION CULMINATED IN A PUBLIC SYMPOSIUM ON SATURDAY, JANUARY 25, 2020. IN THE SPRING, THE DRAWING CENTER PRESENTED TWO EXHIBITIONS: CURTIS TALWST SANTIGO: CANT I ALTER IN ITS MAIN GALLERY AND GUO FENGYI: TO SEE FROM A DISTANCE IN THE DRAWING ROOM AND DOWNSTAIRS GALLERIES. CURTIS TALWST SANTIAGO: CANT I ALTER IS THE FIRST EXHIBITION DEVOTED TO THE CANADIAN-TRINIDADIAN ARTISTS DRAWING PRACTICE. IN CANT I ALTER, SANTIAGO CREATED A MULTI-FACETED NARRATIVE IN AN IMMERSIVE, DRAWING-FILLED INSTALLATION THAT EXPLORED THE THEME OF ANCESTRY AND THE NECESSITY OF PRESERVING THE PAST WHILE ACKNOWLEDGING THE FALLACIES IMPLICIT IN HISTORICAL RECOLLECTION. GUO FENGYI: TO SEE FROM A DISTANCE IS THE FIRST MAJOR INSTITUTIONAL PRESENTATION OF THIS CHINESE ARTISTS WORK IN THE UNITED STATES. THE EXHIBITION FEATURED MORE THAN THIRTY WORKS FROM GUOS BRIEF YET PROLIFIC CAREER, INCLUDING DRAWINGS EXECUTED ON BOOK AND CALENDAR PAGES AND ON CLOTH, AS WELL AS SMALL- AND LARGE-SCALE DRAWINGS ON RICE-PAPER SCROLLS. GUO FENGYI: TO SEE FROM A DISTANCE TRAVELLED TO THE SCAD MUSEUM OF ART IN SAVANNAH, GEORGIA WHERE IT WAS ON VIEW FROM AUGUST 20 NOVEMBER 29, 2020. BOTH EXHIBITIONS WERE ACCOMPANIED BY EXHIBITION CATALOGS WITH FULL-COLOR ILLUSTRATIONS. THE DRAWING CENTER'S GALLERIES WERE CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC BETWEEN MARCH AND AUGUST 2020 IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC. OUR ENTIRE STAFF MOBILIZED TO PRESENT ON-SITE PROGRAMS AS ONLINE ONES, AND LAUNCHED A NUMBER OF NEW ENGAGEMENT INITIATIVES ON VIRTUAL PLATFORMS. PUBLIC PROGRAMS HOSTED ONLINE IN 2020 INCLUDED LECTURES, EXHIBITION TOURS, ARTIST AND EDUCATOR-LED DRAWING WORKSHOPS, AND STUDIO VISITS. ATTENDANCE AT THESE PROGRAMS PROVED TO BE ROBUST; OVER THE YEAR, APPROXIMATELY 89,000 VISITORS ENGAGED WITH ONE OR MORE OF OUR VIRTUAL PROGRAMS. THE DRAWING CENTER PRESENTS AROUND 40 PUBLIC PROGRAMS EVERY YEAR. THESE INCLUDE GALLERY TALKS AND WALKTHROUGHS; LECTURES; READINGS; PERFORMANCES; AND FILM SCREENINGS THAT PROVIDE NEW INSIGHTS INTO THE WORK ON VIEW IN EXHIBITIONS OR TO THE MEDIUM OF DRAWING MORE GENERALLY. FOR ADDITIONAL ENTRY POINTS, THE DRAWING CENTER PRODUCES A CATALOGUE OR PUBLICATION AROUND EACH OF ITS MAJOR EXHIBITIONS; THERE ARE 142 BOOKS IN THE "DRAWING PAPERS" SERIES, WHICH HAVE IMPACTED MILLIONS ONLINE AND THROUGH WIDE DISTRIBUTION TO BOOKSTORES. THE DRAWING CENTER SERVES 5,000+ INDIVIDUALS ANNUALLY THROUGH ITS MICHAEL IOVENKO SCHOOL PROGRAMS AND PROGRAMMING IN COLLABORATION WITH DIVERSE COMMUNITY-BASED ORGANIZATIONS. SERVING STUDENTS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS FROM ACROSS THE FIVE BOROUGHS OF NYC, SINGLE-SESSION DRAW AND REFLECT ART WORKSHOPS CONSIST OF A GUIDED TOUR AND AN ART-MAKING WORKSHOP IN THE GALLERIES. DRAWING CONNECTIONS IS A PARTNERSHIP WITH FOUR LOCAL SCHOOLS TO PROVIDE AN IN-DEPTH ARTS-IN-EDUCATION EXPERIENCE FOR 100 STUDENTS; THIS MULTI-PART PROGRAM IS COMPRISED OF A SINGLE GALLERY VISIT AND SIX IN-SCHOOL SESSIONS. THE DRAWING CENTER ALSO OFFERS DRAWING WORKSHOPS FOR ARTISTS OF ALL AGES ON SATURDAY MORNINGS; OFF-SITE PUBLIC DRAWING WORKSHOPS IN COLLABORATION WITH THE NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION STREET LAB; GUIDED TOURS FOR ADULT AND UNIVERSITY GROUPS; AND A ROBUST INTERNSHIP PROGRAM. |
