| Form 990, Part III, Line 4d: Other Program Services Description | OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: Impact of COVID-19 on our business: During the first week of 2020, our Executive Director of 7 years announced that he was leaving RiverCenter to take a job elsewhere. Our Board immediately named our Marketing Director as Interim Director and formed a search committee to fill the position permanently. In mid March, one week after they appointed the Interim Director as the new Executive Director, New Jersey's governor issued the executive order shutting down non-essential businesses and services. We closed our office from March 15 through June 15 and worked from our respective homes. Thus, during 2020, all of our usual promotions and fundraisers were postponed and eventually canceled. Despite this, we were able to end the year with an operating surplus by reducing expenses, securing grants, and participating in the federal payroll tax credit program. Business Recruitment and Retention: most of our 2020 focus was spent on helping to retain our existing businesses by doing whatever possible to help them navigate the pandemic. This included: - Provided Financial Relief - We were awarded a $110,000 grant from the NJ Department of Community Affairs and regranted $60,000 of those funds directly to our businesses to offset costs associated with the pandemic. The rest of the funds were used to purchase equipment and supplies to help support their businesses as they moved outdoors during the summer months - Acted as an Information Clearing House: We provided accurate and timely information about rapidly changing restrictions on their operations and about where to get financial aid and help with the application process. - Facilitated Outdoor Expansion - We worked with local authorities to enable restaurants and retailers to expand their businesses outdoors, maximizing their trade while still observing safety regulations. This included orchestrating an outdoor dining pavilion by closing two blocks of Broad Street and working with municipal officials to put the infrastructure in place such as overhead lighting, signage, trash receptacles, hand sanitizing stations, and portable ADA ramps. For businesses outside the enclosure area, we helped install "streateries" which gave them space on the sidewalk and in the street in front of their establishments. We also worked with Borough officials and individual businesses to expedite the paperwork and permits required for doing business outdoors.Marketing & Promotions: The pandemic of 2020 required us to reinvent the way we promoted our businesses and our town. We had to find ways to keep Red Bank on their minds without encouraging risky behavior by attracting crowds. - Curbside Pickup Campaign: During the lockdown period when only our restaurants were permitted to be open for business, we focused on promoting curb-side pickup. With funds from our grant from the NJDCA, we designed and purchased special parking meter covers and parking delineators that created "curb-side pickup zones" throughout town and ran a "Red Bank Takeout Contest" on our social media. Patrons could compete for a Red Bank Gift Card by posting images of their takeout meal on Instagram. - Date Night In Campaign: This program offered curated packages of food, flowers, candles, and other amenities on Friday nights during the lockdown. This enabled "non-essential" businesses to sell their wares along with takeout meals offered by restaurants who were permitted to be open. Patrons ordered online through RiverCenter's system, and pickup their order curbside at the participating restaurant. Advertising, branded packaging and special "Date Night In" pickup zone signage was funded with our grant from NJDCA. - The Broadwalk: As things opened up a bit, we promoted the outdoor dining and retail offerings described above. With festive lighting, flowers, plants, umbrellas, and live music, the "Broadwalk" became a popular but safe outdoor destination for dining and shopping. For those still not ready to be near so many people, individual streateries were ready to serve them throughout town. This partnership between RiverCenter and the Borough of RedBank played a significant role to keep Red Bank's businesses afloat during the pandemic and was awarded a placemaking award by Downtown New Jersey for an "early intervention" program. The town is looking to make it a permanent summertime feature. - Gift Card Program: We managed and promoted the Red Bank Gift Card Program, generating more than $25,000 in sales and more than $17,000 in redemptions at Red Bank restaurants, retailers, and service providers. |
